Shacknews Staff Picks Pragmata as Game of the Mid-Year for 2026

Shacknews has crowned Capcom’s Pragmata its Game of the Mid-Year for 2026, with the site’s Shack Chat feature showing two separate staff members independently landing on the sci-fi hacking-and-shooting adventure as their favourite release of the first six months. Shacknews’ writers weighed Pragmata against a genuinely stacked field that included Bungie’s Marathon, Nintendo’s Star Fox remake, IO Interactive’s 007: First Light, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and Resident Evil Requiem.
Two Shacknews Votes Edge Out Marathon And Star Fox
It’s hard to believe, but we’re already halfway through the year, and 2026 has delivered some awesome games so far, prompting the outlet to compile its personal favourites from the first six months. Rather than a single ranked list, the feature runs as a round-robin of individual staff picks, and Pragmata was the only game to turn up twice among them.
One staffer weighed Pragmata directly against the rest of 2026’s calendar, noting that in six months that featured amazing games like Marathon, 007 First Light, Star Fox, Tomodachi Life, Pokémon Pokopia, Resident Evil Requiem, Mina the Hollower and Mixtape, they still went with Pragmata even though they weren’t sure they’d like it, and the gimmick they were certain would wear thin instead kept them entertained for hours. A second staffer, who had previously covered the game on Shacknews’ Stevetendo Show livestream, separately singled it out too, writing that they loved the interaction between Hugh and Diana because it really feels like a father-daughter relationship, and the moon’s different locations make the setting feel real.
A Shacknews Editor Admits He Doubted The Hacking Gimmick
Pragmata’s combat pairs the human Hugh with the android Diana, who has to hack enemy robots open before Hugh can land a killing shot, a system Shacknews reviewer Donovan Erskine described in the outlet’s launch review as giving fights “a special flare that’s impossible to compare to any game I played before.” The same mechanic left at least one staffer sceptical going into the mid-year vote, admitting: “I was so certain that the gimmick of the game’s combat was going to wear thin.”
That doubt didn’t survive the game’s story. They said they were not expecting to be touched by the game’s narrative thread “The Space Adventures of Hugh Mann,” but that Capcom did “a truly amazing job with this game.” Another entry in the same feature put Star Fox forward as its own current Game of the Year contender, with the writer noting Star Fox is their Game of the Year 2026 as of today, having already played through the game over two dozen times chasing Challenge Mode and Expert Difficulty medals — a reminder of just how close the mid-year race actually was.
Six Years Of Delays, Then Two Million Sales In 16 Days
Pragmata’s mid-year win caps an unusually long road to release. The game was initially announced for 2022, delayed to 2023 in January 2021, and then delayed indefinitely in a June 2023 trailer, before Capcom confirmed in the June 2025 State of Play that it would finally arrive in 2026. It launched on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 on April 17, 2026.
Commercially, the gamble paid off. Capcom’s own investor relations office confirmed that worldwide sales of Pragmata, the company’s all-new IP released on April 17, 2026, surpassed two million units within 16 days of launch. Video Games Chronicle reported that the milestone followed an even faster start, noting the critically acclaimed sci-fi action adventure sold a million copies in its first weekend, according to Capcom. Marking the occasion, director Cho Yonghee posted a message to fans that read, “I’m excited to share that over 2 million players have joined Diana and Hugh on their lunar journey.”
Where Pragmata Stands For NZ And AU Players Chasing The Mid-Year Pick
For gamers in New Zealand and Australia, catching up on Shacknews’ pick is straightforward: Pragmata has been available since its April launch across regional PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Nintendo storefronts alongside the rest of the mid-year contenders it beat out, including Marathon, Star Fox and 007: First Light. With the back half of 2026 still to play out, Shacknews staff themselves flagged that their answers could shift again by December, with one writer adding they expect to revisit Pragmata during the site’s end-of-year deliberations.
