Hatsune Miku Teams With Grimes, slayr for New EP Beyond Borders Vol.1
Hatsune Miku is heading into decidedly non-Vocaloid territory. Japanese media company Dwango, working alongside Los Angeles-based label Nebula17, has confirmed a new collaborative EP called Beyond Borders Vol.1: Emerge Mode Miku, teaming the virtual singer with Grimes, slayr, MOLIY, Odetari, George Clanton, Frost Children and XAMIYA for a fall 2026 release.
The project was unveiled in Los Angeles around Anime Expo 2026, with Dwango describing Beyond Borders as a global initiative supported by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs that aims to expand Vocaloid culture beyond Japan, pairing the country’s biggest producers with leading U.S. producers and songwriters to bring that culture into mainstream Western music. According to the official announcement, Hatsune Miku serves as the main vocalist, partnering with a roster of international artists on new tracks meant to push Vocaloid culture in a fresh direction.
Grimes, Odetari and George Clanton Join Miku’s Genre-Hopping Lineup
The confirmed collaborator list mixes hyperpop, alternative and club-leaning artists with Miku’s synthesized vocal engine. The Outerhaven’s rundown of the announcement confirms Miku will front every track, with Miku serving as lead vocalist across an EP spanning electronic, alternative, hyperpop, rap and experimental music, bringing together Grimes, slayr, MOLIY, Odetari, George Clanton, Frost Children and XAMIYA as the featured artists.
That spread of styles is a deliberate swing away from the rhythm-game staples most gamers associate with Miku, and it puts her synthetic voice through several very different production filters in one release.
Tate McRae, Bad Bunny and Ariana Grande Collaborators Fill Out the Credits
The production and songwriting sheet attached to the EP leans heavily on mainstream pop pedigree. Reporting corroborated across multiple outlets lists producers Grant Boutin, known for his work with Tate McRae; VADAKIN, who has worked with Grimes herself; MOMBRU, credited on Fridayy material; Byrd, who has produced for Bad Bunny; and Xansei, known for work with XG. Songwriting credits reportedly include Charles “Scoot” Anderson, who has written for Ariana Grande, and Cecile Believe, a past collaborator of Charli xcx.
Balancing that Western pop bench, the project keeps veteran Vocaloid producers jon-YAKITORY, SatapanP and picco in the credits, tying the release back to the scene that built Miku’s catalogue over the past two decades.
Dwango’s General Manager Frames the EP as a Cultural Milestone
Gorokiyotake Orimoto, General Manager at Dwango, was quoted describing the release as a turning point for the community that built Miku from the ground up. “Vocaloid culture was born in Japan from the passion of producers making music in their own bedrooms and on their own desktops, and now it’s taking flight on the global stage,” Orimoto said in comments carried by multiple outlets covering the announcement.
No firm release date has been locked in beyond the fall 2026 window, but Dwango has indicated a run of standalone singles will roll out over the northern hemisphere summer to bridge the gap before the full EP lands.
Free Anime Expo Concert Gave Fans an Early Listen
Dwango didn’t just drop a trailer and walk away. According to Anime News Network’s coverage of the official announcement, fans attending Anime Expo were able to hear the new songs live on July 4, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at a dedicated showcase built around the project. The Outerhaven’s report on the event adds that the lineup and trailer were shown during a sold-out JAPAN MUSIC VOCALOID showcase featuring performances from established producers alongside a special guest appearance.
The marketing push behind Beyond Borders has been substantial off-stage too. A corporate disclosure from Dolphin Entertainment (NASDAQ: DLPN) confirmed that its publicity subsidiary 42West represented client Nebula17 in the launch of BEYOND BORDERs, a global music initiative developed in partnership with Japanese media company Dwango and supported by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs, underscoring that this is a coordinated commercial rollout rather than a fan-driven side project.
No NZ or Australian Dates Yet for Beyond Borders
Neither Dwango nor Nebula17 has announced Australian or New Zealand tour stops, regional streaming windows or local pricing for Beyond Borders Vol.1 so far. Given the EP’s digital-first rollout strategy, fans in this part of the world will most likely catch the summer singles through the same streaming platforms as the rest of the global audience, rather than through any dedicated regional release.
For a character who has spent nearly two decades as a bedroom-producer phenomenon turned holographic touring act, a credits list stacked with Grammy-adjacent pop names marks one of the clearest signals yet that Crypton Future Media’s software voicebank is being positioned as a genuine crossover artist rather than a novelty guest feature.
