Black Clover Season 2 Confirmed for October on Crunchyroll After 2026 Anime Expo Preview

Black Clover is finally coming back to screens, and the wait has paid off with what looks like the anime’s biggest storyline yet. According to Polygon, Crunchyroll’s Black Clover season 2 will premiere this October, picking up the Yūki Tabata manga adaptation right where it left off in 2021 and pushing straight into the franchise’s Final Wizard King saga.

Polygon reported that attendees at Anime Expo 2026 got the first public look at the new season, with reporter Ryan Epps detailing a premiere episode that reintroduces Asta and the Black Bulls in the aftermath of the devastating Spade Kingdom Raid. That arc, which closed out the original run, saw the Magic Knights face down the rulers of the Spade Kingdom and some of the strongest devils in the series’ history. Season 2 wastes no time exploring how fragile that victory really was.

New director Ayataka Tanemura takes over from Tatsuya Yoshihara

One of the biggest shifts behind the scenes is the change in director. Polygon noted that Ayataka Tanemura, who previously worked on Black Clover projects including the feature film Sword of the Wizard King, has taken over from original series director Tatsuya Yoshihara. Tanemura is reportedly pushing production values further than before, delivering what Polygon’s preview described as a “powered-up,” more intensified version of the show.

That ambition matters for a franchise that spent five years off television while the source manga kept moving forward without an anime counterpart. A director change this late into a long-running series is a real gamble, but if the season premiere lives up to early impressions, it could reset expectations for how Black Clover’s action sequences are staged going forward.

Asta’s Devil Union Form and the Spade Kingdom fallout

According to Polygon’s breakdown of the premiere, the new season opens in the Spade Kingdom before shifting focus back to the Clover Kingdom, using training sequences between Asta, his demon partner Liebe, and mentor Nacht Faust as the emotional and visual centrepiece. Nacht’s Shadow Magic forces the pair to synchronise their powers ahead of a looming raid against the Dark Triad, all within a tight two-day window established in the episode.

Polygon singled out Nacht’s Mana Zone ability as the standout moment of the premiere, describing a striking black-and-white sequence as Asta and Liebe briefly manage to activate their Devil Union Form. That combination of stakes, character development, and animation ambition is exactly the kind of hook a returning series needs to win back lapsed viewers.

Why Asta’s Anti-Magic still matters five years later

For anyone catching up, Black Clover centres on Asta, an orphan in the Clover Kingdom born without any magical ability in a world where nearly everyone can cast spells. He compensates with brute physical strength and a five-leaf grimoire that grants Anti-Magic, letting him cancel out even the most powerful enemy spells. Alongside his rival and childhood friend Yuno, a naturally gifted mage, Asta rose through the Magic Knights and found his place with the unruly Black Bulls squad.

That underdog premise has always been the show’s emotional core, and Polygon’s preview suggests season 2 leans harder into the tension around Asta’s demonic power. As his abilities draw increasing scrutiny from within the kingdom, the story appears set to question whether the same power that saves the Black Bulls could eventually turn allies against him.

Final Wizard King arc brings new foes for the Black Bulls

Polygon reported that later episodes will move into the manga’s Final Wizard King storyline, introducing fresh political conflict, new and dangerous enemies, and battles described as pushing Asta and the Black Bulls further than anything seen in the original run. Polygon framed the season as a natural entry point for lapsed fans while setting up what could become the anime’s most consequential chapter to date.

For fans in New Zealand and Australia, Crunchyroll remains the platform to watch, meaning the October premiere should line up with existing regional subscriptions rather than requiring a new service. Given how long the anime has been dormant, the return also lands at a moment when several other long-awaited manga adaptations are jostling for attention, making Black Clover’s comeback one of the more closely watched anime releases of the back half of 2026.
