Samsung’s newest member of their A series has released, packing 5G and a decent screen refresh rate built within a super light frame. The Galaxy A22 5G.

Coming in at 6.6 inch with a FHD LCD display at 90Hz refresh the A22 5G is the lower side of the A’s packing 128GB storage and a lowly 4GB RAM.

Powering it is a Mediatek Dimensity 700 and while this is no where near the workhorse that Snapdragon’s are capable of the A22 5G manages to keep up for daily use, even if it stumbles along the way.

Owning a A22 5G would be more for mobile photographers. Samsung gave the low to mid-range device some camera love with a triple array camera housed at the rear consisting of a primary 48MP, wide Camera, 5MP ultra-wide and a 2MP depth lens. For your breath taking selfies you have a mid-standard 8MP front camera.

The A22 5G is skinny on shooting modes. You have Portrait for bokeh effect snaps, standard mode, Food, Panorama, Hyperlapse, Night and Pro. Not much in the way of fanciness here.

Still, the standard and Portrait modes would be enough for any discerning social media snapper or content creator.

You can multi-task on the A22 5G, but to a point. Have too many apps open at a time the wee thing begins to choke. And by too many, I experienced operating lag with four apps running simultaneously; Gmail, Spotify, Messenger and Outlook.

Gaming, although the A22 5G is designed for it, forget it. Only the lighter side of gaming apps will run smoothly.

There were also a few moments where the device was a bit slow to wake up from thumbprint. Like a teenager on a Saturday morning.

But the Galaxy A22 5G has one more trick up its sleeve. The ever-lasting battery.

Samsung have packed a 5,000 mAh power-cell in the Galaxy A22 5G with 15 watt fast charge functionality. While I wasn’t able to run any games of note-worthy on this smartphone, I was able to stream Disney+, Shudder and Netflix fine over WIFI and 5G for around three hours and still having 70% charge left from full.

A full charge up takes around 20 minutes or a bit less from dead flat.

The Galaxy A22 5G is an interesting one.

In some ways it nearly cannibalises it’s A Series siblings with the camera specs, but then it has to stay in the slow lane with day to day operating, while managing to last the distance without a charge up.

If you’re in the market for a smartphone that is not going to cost you a lot and you’re an average user who has a penchant for high quality photo’s the Galaxy A22 5G would be ideal.
