Steam Summer Sale Simulator Lets You Buy Games With Fake Money During the Sale

Mike Wing, a developer with the “Friends Making Apps” collective Danger Testing, has built a browser-based simulator that recreates the Steam storefront and lets users browse, add to cart, and “buy” games during the Steam Summer Sale without spending any real money. The site, Steam Sales Simulator, hands each visitor a virtual wallet and a full replica store to splurge on, with none of the purchases ever touching an actual Steam account.

Wing laid out the reasoning in a post on X on 4 July 2026, writing that he is addicted to buying digital games on Steam, that the summer sale was not helping, and that he built the site to get the same dopamine as buying games without spending real money.

How the Steam Summer Sale Simulator Works

The site sits at steamsalesimulator.com and opens by asking for a made-up username, with no password required, before dropping the user onto a page dressed up as the Steam Summer Sale. Visitors pick an avatar, log in, and start with 100 dollars in a virtual wallet. Any game on the replica store can be added to the cart and checked out, with sound effects on every click and a payment flow that drops each purchased title into a fake library one by one.

The wallet is effectively bottomless. If a balance runs dry it automatically refills to 500 dollars, and an Add Funds button can be clicked as many times as the user wants, pushing the wallet into the millions. None of the games land on a real Steam account, since the whole flow only simulates the purchase.

Achievements, Case Openings, and Fake Playtimes

Beyond the buying loop, the simulator carries a profile leveling system and 30 unlockable achievements. Some are trickier than they look for a site built around clicking. The Exact Change achievement asks the user to zero out the wallet, which means building a cart that matches the wallet balance exactly before the auto-refill kicks in. Another requires buying every single game on the simulator, which is a lot of clicking.

A “Gifts from Gabe” feature triggers a Counter-Strike-style case opening animation, complete with the case opening sound, to reveal a mystery game that gets dropped into the fake library. The profiles also carry made-up playtimes and achievements presented as if the user had earned them inside the games.

A Community Market Where You Sell Items You Don’t Own

Wing has since expanded the simulator with a replica of the Steam Community Market. He announced the addition on X on 5 July 2026, describing it as a place where you can sell items you don’t own for money that doesn’t exist.

Danger Testing’s Weekly Project Run

Danger Testing ship a new project every week. Previous releases include a clone of Elon Musk’s iPhone built to simulate spending his fortune and a game for guessing Kanye West album eras. The Steam Sales Simulator lands as the latest in that run, arriving in the middle of the ongoing Steam Summer Sale where real discounts push players to spend more than they planned.
