According to PriceSpy’s latest research findings, gaming goods may offer some of the best Black Friday discounts going – providing gamers an ideal opportunity to upgrade their gaming setup, grab an early Christmas gift or buy a game at a more affordable price.

Key Research Findings:

• Across the shopping category of ‘games & consoles’, PriceSpy’s Price Index* shows a notable -10.24 per cent drop on Black Friday compared to the start of the year (1 January 2022).
• Compared to a standard shopping day (1 November 2022), three-fifths (59 per cent) of products ‘games & consoles’ experienced price reductions on Black Friday last year.
• PlayStation 5 games particularly stood out for good discount offerings, with 65 per cent of items showing price drops on Black Friday 2022.
• Items that reduced in price by 10 per cent or more saw an average price change of -44 per cent PlayStation 5 games.

Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, New Zealand country manager for PriceSpy, says: “Despite today’s cost of living crisis, our ongoing research highlights that Black Friday still offers promising saving opportunities – especially for gamers.

“However, it remains extremely important for shoppers looking to take part in this year’s sale season to conduct thorough pricing research before making a purchase, for several reasons, as outlined below.”

Price Points Have Increased This Year

As shared in PriceSpy’s 2023 Black Friday Report, average standard prices across many popular shopping categories were found to have increased this year:

• 80 per cent of the 25 categories PriceSpy researched had more expensive standard average prices in 2023, compared to in 2022;
• Specifically, the average price of game consoles rose by seven per cent**.

Liisa continues:  “While Black Friday traditionally offers enticing discounts, our findings underscore the need as to why consumers need to conduct thorough price research to ensure they’re getting genuine deals, especially at a time where we’ve seen overall price increases.”

Reason 2  – Beware of Fake Sales on Black Friday

The term ‘fake sales’ or ‘rollercoaster pricing’ as it may otherwise be referred to, is whereby a retailer gradually hikes a product’s price, before suddenly dropping the price and advertising a discount based on the highest previous price. For example, claiming a discount of 50% compared to the previous day’s price, but – if compared to the price 30 days ago – it may only be a 20% discount.

• Interestingly, PriceSpy’s research found approximately 10 per cent of all products listed under the shopping category of ‘games & consoles’ were subjected to being a ‘fake sale’ on Black Friday last year.

Reason 3 – Not All Black Friday Prices Mean Savings
PriceSpy further cautions shoppers that Black Friday prices aren’t always synonymous with discounts.

• Historical data from the price and product comparison site shows found that 12 per cent of products listed under the category of ‘games & consoles’ saw price increases on Black Friday last year, compared to a normal shopping day (1 November 2022).

Liisa concludes: “Our extensive research confirms that Black Friday is one of the cheapest days of the year to shop in New Zealand. While there are indeed significant discounts to be found, our analysis also uncovers some dubious sales tactics.

“It’s crucial for consumers to be aware that not all deals are as beneficial as they appear. In some instances, prices for products on Black Friday are actually higher, and on other occasions, prices are being hiked before Black Friday to make a discount appear better than what it is.

“This underlines the vital need for shoppers to be sceptical of face-value prices during Black Friday sales and always carry out important price research. Tools like PriceSpy, which provide detailed pricing histories, are invaluable in helping shoppers understand past price trends and make more informed purchasing decisions.”

Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, New Zealand country manager for PriceSpy, says:  “According to our click data, Hogwarts Legacy, which launched mid-February, has Kiwis spellbound – as consumer purchase interest is currently skyrocketing.”

But it’s not just new game releases that are grabbing the attention of gamers.

Despite launching five years ago in 2018, PriceSpy’s data also found popularity for Flashback: 25th Anniversary was on the up, with the game securing a strong second position in February rankings.

“Even though big game releases, like Hogwarts Legacy pulls people in, we are increasingly noticing older games rise back through the popularity rankings, says Liisa.

“We believe a key factor for this shift in shopping behaviours is price, as retailers will often sell older games like Flashback: 25th Anniversary, at significantly discounted price points – to help sell-through older stock, says Liisa.

NOW CLOSED – Amidst a global cost of living crisis when price points are otherwise more expensive, new pricing research conducted by PriceSpy suggests gamers may be in luck this Black Friday.

According to PriceSpy’s Price Index data, the shopping category of games and consoles appeared to deliver the biggest overall Price Index drop on Black Friday last year – at -10.04%.

What’s more, 34 per cent of PlayStation 4 games were found to have dropped in price by 10% or more on Black Friday last year, and the average price change offered to shoppers was an impressive -34%.

Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, New Zealand country manager for PriceSpy, says:  “Based on our research, we’re expecting lots of discounts this Black Friday, which is great news for anyone looking to save some money.”

Overall, PriceSpy’s research revealed on Black Friday last year (2021):

• Almost two-fifths (38 per cent) of all products listed on PriceSpy dropped in price – and of these items, a fifth (19%) received a discount of 10% or more.
• And across the products that dropped in price by 10% or more, the average price change on Black Friday was -21%.

But popular doesn’t always deliver the biggest discount.

“It’s really important that shoppers do not fall into the trap of thinking popular equals big discounts, as even though our research found that ‘mobile phones’ generated the biggest level of consumer purchase interest on PriceSpy last Black Friday, the Price Index change was much lower compared to games & consoles.” says Liisa.

According to PriceSpy’s price index data, on Black Friday last year, the indexed price change across the most-popular mobile phones was -4.32%.

In comparison to games & consoles, it was more significant, at -10.04%.

“With so many discounts happening over the next few weeks, for anyone looking to make a purchase, whether it be a new console, a new game or an older one, the key to finding the best deal is to plan ahead and conduct essential price research – look at price points from different stores and be sure to check a product’s price history,” says Liisa.

“Similarly, people may also be avoiding going to public indoor places, such as the gym at the moment but still want to do something fun and active, which is why Nintendo Ring Fit Adventure (Switch) is great.”

“One thing’s for sure – no matter what game you’re looking to buy, if you don’t want to spend launch game price points, our latest insights highlight it really can pay off to wait for price points to drop, says Liisa.

PriceSpy reveals most-popular games across May and April 2022

NOW CLOSED – Following a busy couple of months of new game releases, PriceSpy, the fully impartial price and product comparison site, has released its latest gaming insights to reveal what Kiwis have been looking to buy most.

According to PriceSpy’s historical click data, across the months of April and May, the biggest hitting games people were looking to purchase comprised of both old and new releases. But it was LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga that claimed the overall top spot!

Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, New Zealand country manager for PriceSpy, says: “In the midst of a global cost of living crisis, it seems gamers are opting to shop more wisely when it comes to the games they are looking to buy – with three out of the five most-clicked on games across April and May being older releases spanning from 2017 to 2020.”

Liisa continues:  “It’s always impressive to see just how many fans both LEGO and Star Wars have. So, when these two popular brands do collaborate (not to mention launch a game that’s also available to play across multi-platforms), they often attract a phenomenal level of attention and interest.

“A surprising result across the top five was Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales for the PS5 and PS4, which placed an impressive second in the top five rank.  And unlike the top ranking game, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales first launched in November 2020 – going to show, it’s not always ‘newness’ that attracts the attention of gamers!”

So, what is the reason gamers are looking to buy older release games?

“Even though a lot of excitement can be placed surrounding the launch of new game releases – with some gamers choosing to queue up outside a store overnight to be first in line to purchase a physical copy, others gamers, it seems, are happy to wait to buy a game when it’s older and the price drops, says Liisa.

“And with the current cost of living crisis impacting spending habits, it seems many are now looking for bargains, as our pricing insights found the price of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales dropped to $49.99 in both May and April, offering a considerable saving.”

Placing third position in PriceSpy’s gaming chart was Nintendo Switch Sports (Switch) – and fourth and fifth were The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch) and Nintendo Ring Fit Adventure (Switch).

Liisa concludes:  “With the cooler months now upon us, gamers may be in the market to find a release to hunker down with.

“Before making any purchase, we do suggest gamers conduct important price research before they buy – and if price points are simply too high for new releases, it’s worth considering older games!”

Based on historical clicks received across all games listed on the fully impartial price and product comparison site throughout the month of March 2022, PriceSpy can reveal the most-clicked on games comprised of a number of new releases.

Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, New Zealand country manager for PriceSpy, says: “Our insights suggest Kiwis were very much backing the latest releases from Sony PlayStation last month, with three out of the five most-popular games coming from them.”

Claiming the overall top spot on PriceSpy monthly gaming rankings was Elden Ring, which launched in February 2022. Gran Turismo 7, which launched on 4 March 2022 secured the second spot and, Horizon Forbidden West, which launched in February this year took third position.

Liisa continues: “Despite Sony PlayStation securing the top three spots last month, the games that placed in fourth and fifth position came from Nintendo – and were both older releases.

“Even though both Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Nintendo Ring Fit Adventures launched some time ago, these games continue to remain firm favourites amongst gamers.

“Some of the reinvigorated interest we are seeing for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in particular may be a direct output of Nintendo recently releasing new downloadable content for the game – keeping gamers on their toes with a range of new and exciting tracks to play.”

Liisa concludes: “For anyone looking to buy one of the most-clicked on games for March – or any game for that matter, we always encourage people to shop around before they buy as carrying out important price research can help save shoppers a considerable amount of money.
