Steins;Gate Octet of Shifting Space Coming to Switch 2 and Switch This October

Spike Chunsoft has confirmed that Steins;Gate: Octet of Shifting Space, a text-parser adventure spin-off that has sat untouched since its original 2011 Windows release, is finally heading west on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. The announcement came during the publisher’s Anime Expo panel, with the game arriving as an early-purchase bonus tied to the physical release of Steins;Gate Re:Boot.

Spike Chunsoft announced during its panel at Anime Expo on Friday that it will release Steins;Gate: Octet of Shifting Space, an adaptation of the original 2011 Windows XP/Vista/7 PC graphic adventure game, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. Spike Chunsoft, Inc. will announce details on how to obtain STEINS;GATE Octet of Shifting Space for Nintendo Switch™ 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation®5, and Steam® at a later date. In other words, the packaging deal for Japan is locked in, but exactly how western players outside the Re:Boot bundle will claim a copy is still an open question.

Typing Commands Like It’s 1986

The pitch for Octet of Shifting Space is a deliberate throwback: what if the original Steins;Gate had been built for an 8-bit home computer instead of a modern console? Instead of the choice-based gameplay common to modern visual novels, STEINS;GATE Octet of Shifting Space recreates the text parser gameplay that defined adventure games of the 1980s, requiring players to advance the story by freely entering English commands and using deduction to discover the right actions. Players take control of protagonist Rintaro Okabe as he chases down a stolen IBN 5100 alongside familiar lab members.

Spike Chunsoft is also preserving the game’s period-accurate presentation quirks. Early adventure games rendered their graphics by drawing each line then filling the image with color, and the game faithfully recreates this classic screen-drawing process, though players who prefer a faster pace can skip the drawing animation at any time with the press of a button. Modern conveniences have been layered in too, with support for both on-screen software keyboards and physical USB keyboards on console.

A Hidden Chaos;Head Crossover Few Fans Remember

Originally released in Japan on October 28, 2011, the game was developed by 5pb. and published by GigasDrop before the Science Adventure catalogue consolidated under MAGES. Its story picks up shortly after the main Steins;Gate narrative and pulls in a character most western fans barely know. The game picks up a month following the ending of the original Steins;Gate and revolves around events brought about by Takumi Nishijou of Chaos;Head — a character who was also featured in a minor role in Steins;Gate. It’s a curious bit of series lore that has largely stayed locked away in Japanese-only PC storefronts for fifteen years.

Original Localizers Return for the Translation

Spike Chunsoft is keeping continuity with the franchise’s English voice on the page. Andrew Hodgson and H. Anthony Israel, previously involved with the original Steins;Gate localization and the upcoming Steins;Gate RE:BOOT localization, are confirmed to be translating this game. That pairing should reassure longtime readers that the command-driven dialogue and puzzle logic will carry the same tone as the mainline release.

Re:Boot’s Staggered Rollout and Digital Deluxe Extras

Octet of Shifting Space‘s fate is tied directly to Steins;Gate Re:Boot‘s launch calendar, and that calendar is split by platform. The game will be available digitally on Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam in North America and Europe on August 20, while it will launch for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5 in North America and Europe on October 29. Spike Chunsoft has also detailed a Digital Deluxe Edition of Re:Boot itself, and the company revealed that its release of MAGES.’ Steins;Gate Re:Boot game will get a Digital Deluxe Edition that includes the game, digital visual book, soundtrack, and footage from the “STEINS;GATE 15th LIVE – ONE WORLD -” live event with English subtitles.

Re:Boot isn’t just a visual refresh either. The remake includes a new story route called the “Gamma Worldline,” in which Rintaro Okabe is cast into a new worldline after enduring countless brutal ordeals — one where the time machine was never completed and D-Mails do not exist, leaving Okabe to rush to the lab only to be met with hostile stares from the very lab members who should be his friends. That new branch, alongside the Octet of Shifting Space bonus, positions Re:Boot as the more complete package for anyone jumping into the franchise for the first time this year.

What This Means for Switch 2 Owners in NZ and Australia

No regional pricing or storefront specifics have been confirmed for Australia or New Zealand yet, and Spike Chunsoft has been explicit that standalone distribution details for Octet of Shifting Space are still pending. For local fans eyeing a physical Re:Boot copy through import or regional retail, the bundled bonus gives an added incentive to buy the boxed edition rather than downloading day one — though as with most Japanese visual novel imports, Kiwi and Aussie buyers will want to confirm eShop or PSN region-locking before ordering. The broader signal here is that Spike Chunsoft is increasingly willing to dust off Science Adventure series curiosities for Switch 2’s growing back-catalogue push, a trend worth watching for other dormant spin-offs still gathering dust in Japan-only release lists.
