I’ve seen Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero so many times now.
From checking it out in the cinema, to watching it on Blu-ray, this movie is an absolute banger. Given the absolutely stunning animation in this movie I thought I should give it a go in UHD to see if it is worth an upgrade.
If you haven’t watched Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero yet, what’s stopping you?
It’s a banger as far as anime movies go. It follows our heroes Piccolo and Gohan as they need to take on a new challenge, a giant new version of Cell. The new version of Cell is created for the Red Ribbon Army’s new leader Magenta. In order to bring about his new weapon he enlists a young Dr Hedo who is the grandson of Gero.
The kicker is that Dr Hedo is young and doesn’t know he is a baddie. He creates a couple of androids called Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 who are built as superheroes to fight the aliens that he has been tricked into thinking are there to destroy humans. Those aliens are of course the Namekian Piccolo and the half-Saiyan Gohan. Gohan has taken a break from fighting so needs to be whipped into shape because Goku, Vegeta, and Brolly are all off-world training.
Despite being from an anime that famously takes forever for anything to happen, it does a surprising amount in a small amount of time. Everything from building up the new characters, giving us context for the current situation for our heroes, through to the actual plot of the movie. With this we get a bit of espionage, we see villains change to heroes, some nice slices of nuance, and of course fights.
The fights are what makes it worth buying the UHD disc in this case. The bulk of the animation is just a slightly better version of Dragon Ball Super animation and there is nothing wrong with that as it’s stunning. But when the movie gets into the final fight the effects are seriously stepped up and look absolutely amazing. In these moments you’ll be glad you’re watching the best possible version of it.
The case comes in a real funky sleeve that, as it describes in the title, has a lenticular image on the front. For anyone confused, that’s the cool images that move depending on the angle you hold it at. It’s not the reason to buy this blu-ray, but it’s still cool as hell
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is a fantastic movie with characters referencing Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball Super.
It’s just a blast that I have watched many times already, and watching it on Ultra HD is as good as it’s gonna get outside of at the actual cinema, and it is well worth the cash to upgrade to it.
