WayForward Announces New Shantae Game for 2027 at Anime Expo

WayForward has confirmed that a brand-new Shantae game is in development and heading for release in 2027, unveiling the news during its panel at Anime Expo in Los Angeles this weekend. The reveal came with fresh artwork for a redesigned Shantae, though the studio shared no other details.

It marks the half-genie’s return, and this time as a fully new entry rather than a revival.

A Redesigned Half-Genie

At the panel, WayForward showed off art for a redesigned Shantae and attached a 2027 release window to the still-unnamed game, declining to reveal anything further for now. Shantae is a platformer series in which players control the half-genie, who can transform into various forms, each with its own set of abilities.

WayForward’s First Fully New Shantae in Years

The last Shantae title, 2025’s Risky Revolution, was not technically a wholly new game, since it was a revival of a 2004 Game Boy Advance entry that had been cancelled before release. California-based WayForward is best known for the series, but across its 30-year history it has also handled plenty of licensed work, including games based on Double Dragon, DuckTales, Adventure Time and Marvel Puzzle Quest.
