Hoa 2 Confirmed for Physical Release on Nintendo Switch 2
Publisher PM Studios has confirmed that Hoa 2, the upcoming 3D sequel to its hand-painted puzzle-platformer, will receive a physical release on Nintendo Switch 2. The confirmation, first reported by Nintendo Everything, also clears up one of the biggest questions hanging over the launch: the boxed copy will not be a game-key card, meaning the complete game will sit on the cartridge itself rather than requiring a mandatory download.
According to PM Studios, the publisher intends to ship a physical version of Hoa 2 on Nintendo Switch 2, though the studio is still waiting to confirm exactly when the game will launch, telling fans they can rest easy knowing it will have a boxed option. The detail was independently corroborated by GoNintendo, which reported that while a release date remains unconfirmed, Hoa 2 will be getting a physical Switch 2 release, though at the time it was unclear whether it would ship as a Game-Key Card or a traditional Game Card. Nintendo Everything’s follow-up has since settled that question in the cartridge’s favour.
Full Cartridge, No Mandatory Download for Hoa 2
The “no game-key card” confirmation matters for collectors and for anyone wary of Switch 2’s increasingly common practice of shipping boxed games that still require a substantial digital download to actually play. Nintendo Everything noted that it’s not a game-key card, so the full game will be included on the cartridge. For a visually rich, narrative-driven title like Hoa 2, that means owners of a physical copy won’t need a day-one patch just to get started.
Pre-order details and a firm release date have not yet been published, and PM Studios has not stated whether the physical edition will include any bonus items, manual or artwork beyond the standard case. The original Hoa’s physical Switch release, handled in Europe by Numskull Games, shipped as a plain boxed package without a manual, so fans shouldn’t necessarily expect a lavish collector’s set for the sequel.
From 2D Side-Scroller to a 3D World for Hoa’s Return
Hoa 2 was first unveiled in March by developer Skrollcat Studio and publisher PM Studios, with Gematsu reporting at the time that the 3D adventure sequel to the side-scrolling puzzle platforming game Hoa will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC via Steam in 2026. Unlike the original’s 2D, hand-painted side-scrolling format, the sequel moves the series into three dimensions.
Skrollcat Studio founder and game designer Son Tung Cao explained the creative direction behind the shift in a press release cited by Gematsu, saying “Hoa has gone through a lot, and the world reflects what goes on inside her: freedom to explore with greater openness and mobility, but also a feeling of loss that comes with its own lesson.” He added that the team’s “task is to reflect this in both gameplay and world-building, and continue to tell Hoa’s story.”
PM Studios CEO Michael Yum framed the sequel as a continuation of a project the publisher holds close, stating “Hoa was a milestone for PM Studios, not just in terms of success, but how it connected to players on a deeply emotional level. It’s a unique blend of evocative storytelling, breathtaking art and intuitive gameplay that resonated strongly with players.”
What the Story Picks Up Where Hoa Left Off
Per the official overview distributed by PM Studios and reproduced across multiple outlets, Hoa 2 opens a long, long time after Hoa closed with its emotionally charged ending, leaving fans wondering what happened to the namesake little fairy; the cycle of life brings her back to a homeland reshaped by time, and her old friends have long since passed, leaving Hoa to find new purpose in a gentle and heartfelt tale of change, of letting go and moving forward.
Gameplay-wise, the sequel promises deeper systems than its predecessor. The game features richer, multi-layered environments and curious creatures to explore with more freedom—both in space and time—with time itself becoming part of the puzzles through shifting lighting and seasonal changes that reshape the landscape, puzzles and narrative moments. Collectible-minded players will also find plenty to chase, as Hoa 2 features many challenging achievements and ultra-cute costumes to collect.
Digital Launch Already Confirmed, Physical Timing Still Open
A digital storefront release has already been locked in separately from the physical news. Nintendo Insider reported that Hoa 2 will be released digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide in 2026, giving players a fallback if the boxed edition slips past the digital debut, as sometimes happens with physical runs from smaller publishers.
For New Zealand and Australian players, physical stock for niche indie titles on Switch has historically arrived via import retailers or limited regional allocations rather than day-one shelf placement, and PM Studios has not yet detailed distribution outside North America and Europe. Local collectors who picked up the original Hoa’s boxed Switch release will want to keep an eye on PM Studios’ storefront and regional retailers for confirmation once a release window is locked in.
