ARK: Survival Ascended Gets Dragontopia Shadowdrop Plus Two More Updates Today

Studio Wildcard has pushed the first proper content update into ARK: Survival Ascended’s new Dragontopia expansion, adding a second tameable dragon called Lumina on July 9 while simultaneously kicking off a free-to-play weekend and a deep discount on the base game across Steam and Xbox.
Studio Wildcard launched the first content update for ARK: Dragontopia with the arrival of Lumina, a radiant celestial dragon and sun-sworn counterpart to the shadow-forged Umbra, with additional included content drops coming in October and December, culminating in a boundless, map-wide skyworld. The update, tracked in official patch notes as version 91.3/91.6, landed on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam PC on the same day.
Lumina Joins Umbra as Dragontopia’s Second Tameable Dragon
Lumina arrives roughly a week after Dragontopia’s surprise shadowdrop introduced Eclipsar Umbra, a shadow-themed dragon tamed via the mythic Dragon Horn item. According to the ARK Official Community Wiki, Lumina, Umbra’s sun-sworn counterpart, scatters brilliant celestial traps to punish pursuers, and bends light itself to vanish in a flash, giving survivors a light-aligned option to pair against Umbra’s night-based abilities.
Official patch documentation compiled by tracking site UpdateCrazy notes the update wasn’t purely about the new creature. The latest Dragontopia DLC update introduces Lumina as a new tameable dragon while delivering extensive Umbra fixes, major ship handling improvements, a 300% Hand Cannon damage increase, and broader Genesis gameplay fixes. Umbra-specific repairs targeted AI targeting problems and control quirks that had frustrated players since its debut.
Free Steam Weekend and 75% Discount Run Alongside the Update
Studio Wildcard timed Lumina’s arrival to double as a promotional push for newcomers. Beginning July 9, the game was free to play on Steam through Monday, July 14 at 10am PT, with the base game and most DLCs available for up to 75% off on Steam and Xbox. Independent coverage confirms the free window matches Steam’s broader Free Weekend rotation. The Steam free-to-play weekend, running from July 9 to July 13, offers a first-person survival game packed with building, exploration, and dinosaurs alongside two other titles.
For Kiwi and Australian players tracking the clock, that July 14 10am PT cut-off lands in the very early hours of July 15 local time in both New Zealand and Australia, meaning most of the free weekend and the associated deep discounts remain accessible right up until the local Tuesday-Wednesday overnight.
Dragontopia’s Roadmap Still Points to a December Skyworld Map
Lumina’s launch is explicitly framed as one step in a longer plan rather than the finished product. Today’s arrival of Lumina expands the growing dragon ecosystem, with additional included content drops coming in October and December, culminating in a boundless, map-wide skyworld. Studio Wildcard has previously said the Dragontopia expansion pass, which currently sells for $29.99, is being built as an evolving pipeline rather than a single finished release, with a dedicated Dragontopia map not landing until later this year.
That staged rollout hasn’t been universally welcomed. Coverage of the expansion’s early access status notes some pushback from the community over value for money at this stage. The r/ARK community has criticized the launch value of the Dragontopia expansion, with players arguing that charging a high premium in Early Access for what currently amounts to just two creatures is ‘insane,’ even with the promise of a full map rollout by December.
Ship and Combat Tweaks Round Out the Update
Beyond the new dragon, the July 9 patch carried a wide sweep of fixes touching the game’s newer naval systems from the earlier Tides of Fortune expansion, alongside general stability work. Official Steam patch notes describe the update as covering a broad range of post-launch issues following the earlier Genesis Ascended Part 1 and Tides of Fortune releases, including gamepad control fixes, ship handling adjustments, and various creature and mission bugs.
With Umbra’s control issues addressed and Lumina now available to tame across most non-Island maps ahead of December’s full Dragontopia region, Studio Wildcard appears to be using the current Steam promotion to funnel a wave of new and returning players straight into its dragon-focused content push before the next scheduled update in October.
