It’s no secret that I love Nicolas Cage.

Whether it’s his highlights or his lowlights.

He is consistently entertaining. A lot of the indie flicks he has been in more recently like Pig have been incredible, so a new action movie with an old Nicolas Cage in it, that’s an easy sell.  And here we are with The Retirement Plan.

The Retirement Plan kicks off with one of our leads Ashley and her husband Jimmy are taking part in a crime that goes wrong. Because they have a hard drive that belongs to a pretty big crime boss, Jimmy suggests that Ashley and her daughter head off to the Cayman Islands to stay safe with her Dad. Ashley isn’t a fan of her dad but begrudgingly agrees.

The Retirement Plan

In the Cayman Islands we meet an old retired Matt played by Nicolas Cage. Here I was expecting him to be a grumpy old man, instead we are met with a man who is delighted to meet his granddaughter and daughter. He is aware he was an ass of a father, and so he is delighted by the chance to hang with them.

Anyway, the baddies follow them to the Cayman Islands, and thanks to Matt’s background in the CIA, action ensues. The plot isn’t exactly revolutionary. The bulk of it could be any other action movie, though Ashley’s character is kinda daft to a frustrating fault.

Yea she’s angry at her dad, and she’s not a great criminal, but she can be very frustrating at times.

The Retirement Plan

The action scenes though are great, and the comedy varies from fine at times, to actually making me laugh out loud.

The scenery makes for an interesting backdrop for the action, with the whole film being beautifully shot. Throw in some damn good acting from Ron Perlman, Nicolas Cage, and the rest of the cast, and it’s a damn fine silly action flick.

Is The Retirement Plan going to be your next favourite action movie?  Probably not.

But what it does offer is fun action entertainment that is very re-watchable. That makes it a perfect addition to your Bluray collection.
