Square Enix: A Nintendo Switch 2 Port of Final Fantasy XV “Not Impossible”

Square Enix has suggested that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XV is not off the table, following a shareholder question about the possibility. As reported by Nintendo Life, the publisher’s official response, now translated on its website, states that such a port is “not entirely impossible,” even though the company flagged hardware constraints tied to faithfully recreating the original experience.
The exchange took place at Square Enix’s latest shareholders meeting, where an attendee reportedly pointed to the technical feat of bringing the Final Fantasy VII remake to Switch 2 as evidence that older mainline entries could theoretically follow. According to Nintendo Life’s translation of the company’s official answer, Square Enix said it would pass the request on to its development team “as a valuable perspective on marketing and future platform options,” stopping short of confirming any concrete plans.
From rumour to official acknowledgement
The story initially broke as a rough translation of the shareholder Q&A, with Square Enix said to have described a Nintendo version as not “completely impossible” and apparently “under consideration.” Nintendo Life has since confirmed the details with the company’s own official English translation, clarifying that the question specifically concerned a Switch 2 release rather than the original Switch hardware.
Final Fantasy XV originally launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One back in 2016, offering an open-world take on the long-running RPG series. Nintendo Life notes that Push Square scored the original release an 8 out of 10 at the time, reflecting a generally positive if divisive reception.
The Pocket Edition problem
Technically, a version of Final Fantasy XV has been available on Nintendo hardware since 2018 through the Switch eShop, but only in the form of Pocket Edition HD, a scaled-down mobile adaptation. Nintendo Life’s own review was unkind to that release, calling it “an inferior version clone of the already divisive game” and awarding it just six out of ten stars.
That gap between the compromised mobile spin-off and the full open-world experience is likely why fans continue to push for a proper port. Square Enix’s acknowledgement that a true Switch 2 version isn’t technically impossible will only fuel hopes that Pocket Edition HD won’t remain the only way to play Noctis’s story on Nintendo hardware.
Part of a bigger Final Fantasy push on Switch 2
Square Enix has been steadily expanding its Final Fantasy presence on Nintendo’s newest console. As Nintendo Life reports, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is set to arrive on Switch 2 this July, with Final Fantasy XIV Online following in August, Final Fantasy Resonance in October, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation slated for 2027.

With that lineup already stacking up, a full Final Fantasy XV port would mark another significant addition to Switch 2’s growing RPG library. For now, though, Square Enix has only confirmed that the idea is being considered internally, leaving fans to wait for any formal announcement.
