Mob Psycho 100 is one of the strangest animes I have seen. Not the story being told, but in the weird humour and quirky art style. With the third season, it’s no less weird.
If you haven’t seen the story before, for the most part it’s a solid shonen anime.
We have our young protagonist Shigeo, a.k.a Mob, who has super strong psychic powers. This is especially important since the world is filled with evil spirits. Mob is very young and so is employed by a self proclaimed powerful psychic who sells removing evil spirits as a service. The kicker, he’s just a good salesman and has no actual power. He stops the evil spirits thanks to the incredible power of his part time employee, who he calls his apprentice, Shigeo. So for the most part it sounds like a pretty standard fare shonen anime series.
The art style which makes it super unique is animated really nicely but has chunkier lines that almost make it look like an early 2000’s series.
With much better quality though, it gives an awesome unique vibe to the show. Then there is the humour which is dotted throughout the series. Sometimes carefully crafted, for the most part incredibly silly. It definitely.made me chuckle out loud at times, and cringe at others. As with the previous seasons, this is still consistent this time.
Mob Psycho 100 III drops us in with Shigeo who is a little bit distracted. His classmates are thinking about what they are going to when they go to high school. He didn’t think he had to think too much on this but with everyone else being super serious he realizes he has to worry a bit more about it. This kicks off a series of challenges that Shigeo has to overcome at this complicated age. These distractions aren’t too ideal as he has to help get rid of the big scary spirits around, and so especially early on this is a solid source of humour.
The show kicks in pretty fast at the start of the season when his town becomes enamored with a cult based around a sacred tree. That tree is…. A giant magical broccoli that grew in the middle of the town towering over everything. Shigeos spirit friend Dimple sees his chance to get the godly power he has desired and jumps on it. I won’t spoil the plot too much but this storyline is banged out in the first half of the season with a very strange ending.
Like usual the plot moves really fast in Mob Psycho 100 III.
A hell of a lot of story is plowed through, which I really like because some shows can drag it out waaaaay too long. Instead with this show you really have to pay attention as you can miss a lot if you zone out or get distracted with something else.
Mob Psycho 100 III isn’t the best season thus far, but it’s still very damn solid. Shigeo gets a little bit of development, and I bounce around from liking and hating Dimple throughout. Either way, if you have enjoyed Mob Psycho 100 so far, you’ll enjoy this.
