Huawei has launched its first foldable phone, the HUAWEI Mate X, at MWC Barcelona on February 24th, 2019.

From the Balong 5000 Chipset to its CPE device, the foldable phone shows the confidence of the Chinese tech giant to lead the future of the smartphone industry.

At the event, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei CBG New Zealand said, “We are thrilled to provide consumers with an unprecedented user experience with the HUAWEI Mate X as it combines foldable screen, AI and an all-new model of interfacing. The HUAWEI Mate X will be one of the first to shape the future of what smartphones can offer.”

The foldable 5G smartphone has won numerous awards from media all over the world including the GSMA’s prestigious “Best Connected Mobile Device of Mobile World Congress 2019” at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2019.

Huawei Mate X Foldable

The HUAWEI Mate X, Huawei’s first foldable phone, is powered by the Balong 5000. The chipset is a 5G multi-mode chipset and at Sub-6 GHz (the main low-frequency band spectrum used for 5G) it can achieve download speeds up to 4.6 Gbps while also providing a peak download rate of up to 6.5 Gbps in the mmWave frequency bands. Balong 5000 is also the world’s first 5G chipset to support Sub-6G 100 MHz x 2CC bandwidth, and NR TDD and FDD full spectrum.

Huawei has exclusive technology to improve the uplink coverage performance and provide extensive signals. The HUAWEI Mate X features the AI smart antenna technology, which can intelligently identify the user scenarios for automatic antenna switchover. This allows users to have a fast and smooth Internet experience in all kinds of situations.

The device also features a dual-SIM feature so that when one SIM is used for a VoLTE call, another SIM can receive calls or surf online. This integrates a seamless transition to two SIMs and prevents network interruptions or missed calls for optimum user experience.

With an innovative hinge, the phone unfolds with ease. This design is achieved through adapting the flexible OLED panel that can bend under pressure, while the patented mechanical hinge design is used to support the movement of the parts behind the screen. When folded, the device is a huge display smartphone with a 6.6-inch screen, and when opened, it turns into a slim tablet with an 8-inch screen. The impressive design has made the phone “stretchable” and achieved a gapless look when folded together.

With a bigger screen and a higher screen resolution, the phone is transformed into an 8-inch tablet with a thickness of only 5.4mm. The HUAWEI Mate X enables users to flexibly switch between smartphone and tablet modes based on their needs. This unique design also meant that the foldable phone could provide a bezel-less approach, allowing you to have a truly “full” screen experience.

You could now open two apps at the same time, each app running as if it was occupying a full phone screen. The expansive viewing area lends well to both productivity and entertainment scenarios—everything from editing a document to reading feels better on a larger screen. Users can drag images from their photo gallery to their emails in split-screen mode.

To maximise the potential of a foldable phone, Huawei has developed a new feature – Mirror Shooting. When shooting in smartphone mode, the HUAWEI Mate X displays a digital viewfinder on both primary and secondary displays, allowing both the photographer and the subject to see what the photo will look like before it is taken.

The HUAWEI Mate X features a 2-in-1 fingerprint sensor and power button. Minimalistic and unobtrusive, the integrated button authenticates user identity when powered up—which speeds up the process while keeping the device safe and secure.

The word “foldable phones” has been the buzz word in the tech industry lately and it isn’t merely a phase in smartphone innovation. It’s predicted there will be more breakthroughs with foldable technology over the next few years that will make today’s futuristic foldable phones a relic of the past. For now, the HUAWEI Mate X has boldly marketed its foldable phone as a 2-in1 tablet smartphone and investment in R & D will help continue to shape the industry.

The retail release date for the HUAWEI Mate X is still to be confirmed.
