Huawei has just announced the New Zealand launch of its latest device in its acclaimed HUAWEI WATCH GT series: the HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro.

Huawei’s latest flagship smartwatch has recently picked up the EISA Best Smartwatch 2022-2023 Award, and comes with a new interface design, premium materials, an ultra-clear large screen, up to 14 days battery life, ECG tracking and improved water-resistant performance that supports freediving up to 30 metres deep.

The award-winning HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro makes it easy to support a healthy lifestyle, with ECG analysis and TruSeen 5.0+ data monitoring technology that enable accurate heart health measurement, as well as blood oxygen monitoring. The HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro has received a CE-marking for its ECG app, an administrative sign highlighting its compliance with EU safety, health and environmental requirements allowing the service to expand to 33 European countries.

The device has also taken its sporting capabilities to the next level, with an all-new freedive mode in addition to over 100 other workout modes, for a truly bespoke workout experience. A combination of a smart running plan and Dual-Band Five-System GNSS positioning for more accurate geographic location helps runners of all abilities go the extra mile.

One of the HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro’s most exciting new features is its increased water resistance. After 200 rounds of water pressure testing, it complies with the engineering standard EN 13319 and achieves ground-breaking diving-level water-resistant performance, which can support freediving up to 30 metres deep.

There’s even a new Free Diving Mode, which provides real-time diving information and can be hugely beneficial for anyone learning to freedive. An apnea training feature with customisable tables helps users as a personalised training assistant for improving their breath-holding capability.

The HUAWEI WATCH GT series is inspired by the automotive industry and is named after the high-performance yet luxurious station wagon, the ‘Grand Tourer’ or ‘Gran Turismo’. The GT was one of the first high-performance, high reliability and high horsepower sports cars and became synonymous with glamour, adventure and endurance. The HUAWEI WATCH GT series has harnessed that association with a smartwatch which holds the same ground-breaking and long-lasting qualities.

The first device in the series made a huge impact when it was launched in 2018. With its two-week-long battery life, scientific exercise guidance and professional health monitoring capabilities. It disrupted the market and became the must-have device for anyone serious about tracking their health.

The new iteration of the watch has seen innovative new features, dedicated workout modes, and even more precise health monitoring. The design has been perfected over the years, for a smartwatch as luxurious to look at as it is to use.

HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro Titanium Edition has a tactile 3D rotating crown in a traditional watch style. It allows the user to zoom in and out, slide through different interfaces, or adjust settings, all by clicking and rotating the crown.

As well as looking and feeling great, it also makes prioritising health easy with an ECG button – an upgraded version of the feature of the HUAWEI WATCH GT 2 Pro ECG. The button combines with electrode technology to collect and measure ECG data to an incredible level of elegance and accuracy.

HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro inherits the sporting DNA of the GT series but with upgraded hardware and software capabilities and even more comprehensive sports modes. It has a built-in dual-band five-system GNSS and features five major satellite systems: GPS, Beidou, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS, spanning the entire globe with excellent anti-interference performance, minimising the likelihood of any error.

Sport is a social activity, and HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro allows users to share their workouts with their friends, and invite them to join in. The watch can keep up with wherever your workout takes you, with offline and Route Back Navigation to help you find your way.

Among the over 100 workout modes is the intelligent running plan. It helps create a personal running plan based on an individual’s physical and running history and performance goals. One of the main functions of a smartwatch is health monitoring, and HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro comes with more accurate health features than before including the electrocardiogram function (ECG). Huawei’s ECG app packs a high-performance ECG sensor module, which provides single-lead ECG measurements, real-time analysis, and sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, and atrial and ventricular premature beat reminders, to stay informed and proactive about heart health-related risks. Plus, HUAWEI TruSeen 5.0+ supports SpO2 monitoring, allowing you to measure your oxygen levels at any time.

HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro has a whole host of other health features to help monitor your general wellbeing. There’s a menstrual cycle management function, which keeps track of your cycle and reminds you in advance so you never get caught short. You can set yourself health challenges, track your sleep and water intake, set reminders to take medication and more.

HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro Series inherits the ultra-long battery life of the HUAWEI WATCH GT Series, typically providing HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 Pro Titanium Edition up to 14 days battery life (or eight in heavy usage scenarios. Wireless charging and a 30% faster charging speed compared with WATCH GT 2 Pro make it quick and easy to charge when you’re on the go. Huawei’s 2022 range of smartwatch, fitness and health trackers are now on offer with a model to suit pretty much everyone.

From the small to mid and larger sized, they are built to be tough while keeping your vitals in check.

Upping the stakes from last years Huawei Watch Fit smartwatch and fitness tracker they have this year released its second edition, the Huawei Watch Fit 2.

The all screen watch runs Huawei’s own operating system – HarmonyOS and comes in with a 1.74 inch full view display. That’s a smidgen bigger than last year’s model.

In the box comes two silicon straps (incase, like me, you have smaller wrists).

Swipe up from the bottom and you’ll see any notifications you’ve got. Swipe down from the top and there’s your watch’s settings. A swipe from the left gets you some basic info, like weather and a swipe from the right sees all of your important health stats to the likes of heart rate, steps and more. You can customise what you see and even transfer a few songs over to the Huawei Watch Fit 2.

Oddly, the Huawei Watch Fit 2 does seem to forget some notifications, and can alert you hours after the fact. I also missed almost all call alerts. Something that the GT 3 I previously reviewed never misses a beat with.

But hold up – I’m getting ahead of myself. First you need to connect the watch up.

Now there is a process to this and the first time I gave it a go on the Huawei Watch GT 3 I had problems on an Android based phone.

On the box and even on the face of the watch when you first begin setup there’s a QR code. Scan that to be taken to a download of Huawei’s App Gallery.

From there you’ll need to find, download, install and use the Huawei Health app (not the one on the Google Play store).

Once you’ve done all that – you’ll see the list of watches in the app. Select the one you have and it’s straight forward from there.

If you have a newer Huawei Watch already, then likely you’ve already been through this process and you’ll just need to open Huawei Health app and connect your watch.

The Health app doesn’t just facilitate the connection, it’s also where all of your stats are recorded to from your Huawei Watch Fit 2.

From sleeping patterns, health and also where you can customise your watch, watch faces and more.

The Huawei Watch Fit 2 also has differing workout modes.

There’s one tactile button to the right of the watch which takes you to the Menu. In the Fitness app you have Courses, Indoor and Outdoor run, Walking, Cycling, Swimming, Skipping and way more.

There’s an onboard personal coach that will assist you through differing workout modes.

If you’re a fitness guru then the Huawei Watch Fit 2 is your perfect companion. If you’re not, it will still award you for simply how many steps you take in a day.

The Huawei Watch Fit 2 has a built in mic and speaker for handsfree calling (bluetooth). With automatic SpO2 monitoring and waterproof up to 50 meters (not sea / salt water).

It’s so light you forget it’s there and with a 7 to 10 day battery life, you rarely need to take it off.

The unit that I was sent for this review has been lasting me 8 days consistently.

Being the mid sized sibling in the Huawei Watch series, for me it’s not too small, I prefer the bigger sized screens on my wrist, more screen, more to see, but this one is just right.

When compared to competitor models out there – the Huawei Watch Fit 2 gives you a lot more for a lot less of a price tag and is one of the most reliable smart watches you can have.

The HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 also comes with an upgraded workout monitoring feature, providing over 100 workout modes, including 18 professional workout modes, 12 outdoor workouts (running, walking, mountain climbing, hiking, cross-country running, cycling, open water swimming, triathlon, skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and golf) and 6 indoor workouts (walking, running, cycling, pool swimming, free training, elliptical machine, and rowing machine).

Huawei’s new running ability measurement, Running Ability Index (RAI), uses historical running heart rate, pace, and other data to analyse the running performance after each training, which is convenient for users to understand the training progress and witness their improvements.

The number of third-party apps on the HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 has increased, covering daily life, travel, gaming, entertainment, work, fitness, and health, covering all aspects of young people’s scenarios.

The HUAWEI WATCH GT 3 will be available for pre-order from Thursday, 24 March 2022 and the products will be available in participating national retailers from Thursday, 31 March 2022.

Alongside the release of the Huawei GT3 comes a sports specific, track and field smart watch like never before. The GT Runner.

Packed with scientifically engineered Run based workouts the GT Runner is exactly what its namesake suggests.

Lighter than a lot of the smart wearables out there at only 36.5 grams the sports watch will help you train with its A.I. Coach, map out real world run tracks and build routines to have you sprinting about the neighbourhood like a track and field star.

Huawei have placed reliability and accuracy at the forefront of the GT Runner – placing an extended GPS antennae in to the the strap clip.

The GT Runner, on the face of it is similar to the GT3 – and for the most part has similar look and feel too, albeit lighter to wear.

The same tactile buttons on the right with similar functions too.

But the GT Runner is no watered down GT3, it’s a smart watch in a class of uniqueness.

Setting up the GT Runner is an interesting procedure. I covered this off in the GT3 review, that you can read here.

So to save reading time, I wont go in to it again, but to say once you’ve got yourself sorted via the Huawei Health app you’re ready to put your joggers on.

The GT Runner syncs via Bluetooth to either Android or iOS (Apple) and will track your vitals, such as heart rate and steps count in real time. The watch even records fat burning as you workout.

The smart watch has a ‘Running Ability Index’ and what this is, is a visualisation of your activity on your wrist in real time, giving comparisons to your overall goals.

If you feel that you’re not quite up for the heavy stuff just yet – set training goals and let the GT Runner be your personal coach with voice guidance.

If you’re keen to see your stats and achievements in more detail these are in the Huawei Health app.

Using the GT Runner is simple as. On the extremely popping and vivid AMOLED 46mm watch face it’s all swipe gesture to get to your stats, your media and more with the top right side dial taking you to the watch’s menu.

The bottom right button gets you in to workout modes.

Speaking of watch faces, you can customise these either by the watch touchscreen for any installed faces or via the Huawei Health app to install new ones.

You’ll get all of your notifications too. Without fail. Also you’ll never miss a call while your feet are beating the ground with handsfree calling via the watch’s built-in mic and speaker.

The GT Runner has builtin storage for you to transfer media too – that can be played back via bluetooth.

Best of all the GT Runner can go as far as you need it to and then some.

The battery life will last up to two weeks of consistent use before needing a full charge up on its magnetic charger.

This said I received both the GT3 and GT Runner watches from Huawei at the same time, so I had someone else who is a fitness freak wear the GT Runner.

With their three times a day workouts and active life the GT Runner has yet to need a charge up, after over two weeks.

Currently sitting at 37% battery at the time of writing, this is pure power wizardry.

The GT Runner is a first for Huawei. A sports wearable that is, well, specific to sports.

If you are someone who likes to put on sweatpants before the sun comes up or jogs a few blocks as the sunsets, or even a gym junkie, Huawei have designed the GT Runner for you.

Huawei Developer Conference 2020 (Together) was held today at Songshan Lake.

In the keynote speech, Huawei announced major upcoming updates for HarmonyOS 2.0, EMUI 11, HMS(Huawei Mobile Services), HUAWEI HiLink, and HUAWEI Research.

These improvements will empower global developers and ecosystem partners to provide enhanced and innovative user experiences for users. At the event, Huawei also unveiled six new products that will contribute to Huawei’s all-scenario experience – HUAWEI MateBook X, HUAWEI MateBook 14, HUAWEI WATCH GT 2 Pro, HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro, HUAWEI WATCH FIT and HUAWEI FreeLace Pro. During the three days, Huawei will bring together developers from around the world through various exciting activities, including Lakeside Talks, Tech. Sessions, Tech. Hour, Codelabs and more. The itinerary will provide opportunities for developers to network, collaborate, and explore ways to bring smart all-scenario experiences to every user.

“Huawei’s breakthrough in ecosystem development is a result of the strong support from global developers and partners. Huawei will fully open core technologies as well as software and hardware capabilities to developers, collaborating with them to drive further innovation of an all-scenario smart ecosystem,” said Richard Yu, Executive Director and CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.

Huawei announced its all-scenario experience operating system, HarmonyOS, back in 2019.

Since then, a robust line-up of devices has been developed for the system, facilitating quick device discovery, instant connection, hardware collaboration, and resource sharing between multiple smart devices. HarmonyOS 2.0 is announced today, bringing a comprehensive upgrade to its existing distributed capabilities, including software bus, data management, and security. Huawei also introduced an adaptive UX framework that allows developers to quickly reach tens of millions of new devices and users.

With the latest update, HarmonyOS will officially be open-source and developers will be able to gain access to emulators, SDK packages, and IDE tools. The open source project, which is donated to OpenAtom Foundation, will be launched in stages with a mobile HarmonyOS beta release planned firstly for Chinese developers at the end of 2020. Richard Yu announced the roadmap for HarmonyOS in his keynote speech. “Starting on 10 September, HarmonyOS is open to 128KB-128MB IoT devices, such as smart TVs, wearables, cars and more. In April 2021, we will open it to 128MB4GB devices and in October 2021, HarmonyOS will be opened for devices above 4GB,” he said.

Based on the distributed technology in HarmonyOS, the newly released EMUI 11 enables interaction beyond smartphones. The new operating system allows devices interact with HarmonyOS-based IoT devices, bringing a unique all-scenario experience to users, including using the camera of a biggerscreen device for video calling. The process is powered by the touchless connection between smartphones and HarmonyOS-based home devices, enabling screen projection and more.

With the support of more 1.8 million registered developers worldwide, AppGallery and the HMS ecosystem has continued to show progress this year. AppGallery currently has over 96,000 apps integrated with HMS Core and more than 490 million global active users. In addition, it also achieved a record 261 billion app downloads and distributions between January and August 2020.

In a single year, HMS Core 5.0’s open capabilities have increased from 14 Kits to 56 Kits, while the number of APIs has jumped from 885 to 12,981 covering seven major areas, helping developers achieve innovation and simplify the development process.

For instance, the CG Kit in the Graphics field improves graphics, image quality and experience, as well as improving game screen rendering efficiency. Location kit in the App Services category meets the positioning requirements, providing centimetre to millimetre accuracy location tracking depending on the scenario. Huawei is committed to fully opening its core software and hardware capabilities. It has opened up core software services, such as browsing, search, map, payment, advertising kits, to accelerate innovation in app development. Huawei has also open up hardware capabilities such as its worldclass camera capabilities, AR map capabilities, communication and transmission tools, as well as its leading privacy and security protection capabilities. Through these, Huawei seeks to empower developers to create a new generation of well-loved innovative apps across different categories.

Huawei also has extensive support to assist developers explore business opportunities in China and other global markets, by providing relevant consulting service, localization and integration, marketing and campaign services. Going forward, Huawei continues to expand developer services. Huawei is building three global ecosystem cooperation labs in Russia, Poland, and Germany to serve global developers and provide enablement, testing, and certification services. Five global developer service centres will also be established in Romania, Malaysia, Egypt, Mexico, and Russia, providing local services and platforms to help developers better grow and innovate.

As the standardised language of IoT Devices, HiLink breaks down barriers between IoT devices from different brands and manufacturers, providing a unified platform where devices can connect easily, and interact seamlessly.

This year, upgrades to HUAWEI HiLink will be made in five key areas: connection, interaction, operation, solution provider, and authentication. The goal is to make billions of IoT devices connect easily, more convenient to manage and control, and interact seamlessly to enable an all-scenario hardware ecosystem. At present, there are 50 million active users contributing more than 1 billion all-scenario device interaction requests every day, with a cumulative 400 million downloads of the Smart Life App.

In the Active Health Field, Huawei assisted in heart health research by ensuring that health research data collected is accurate and diverse. In the Travel Safety Field, mobile and wearable devices intelligently collaborate with automobiles to bring new safe-driving technologies such as the collision avoidance system and driver fatigue care. In the Home Life Field, Huawei harness multi-device wireless sensing capabilities to provide features, such as fall detection, non-inductive breathing monitoring and spatial positioning.

Huawei will continue to drive its software and hardware ecosystem moving forward. It is committed to opening up core technologies and capabilities further and empowering global developers and partners to create new possibilities together.

At the Huawei Developer Conference today, Huawei launched HarmonyOS – a new microkernel-based, distributed operating system designed to deliver a cohesive user experience across all devices and scenarios.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, explained the company’s thoughts behind developing this new OS. “We’re entering a day and age where people expect a holistic intelligent experience across all devices and scenarios. To support this, we felt it was important to have an operating system with improved cross-platform capabilities. We needed an OS that supports all scenarios, that can be used across a broad range of devices and platforms, and that can meet consumer demand for low latency and strong security.” “These were our goals with HarmonyOS,” he continued.

“HarmonyOS is completely different from Android and iOS. It is a microkernel-based, distributed OS that delivers a smooth experience across all scenarios. It has trustworthy and secure architecture, and it supports seamless collaboration across devices. You can develop your apps once, then flexibly deploy them across a range of different devices.”

Traditionally, new operating systems are released alongside new types of devices.

As early as 10 years ago, Huawei envisioned a future where intelligence would seamlessly integrate with all aspects of our lives, and it began exploring how it might deliver this experience – one that would transcend the boundaries of physical space and span different hardware and platforms.

HarmonyOS is a lightweight, compact operating system with powerful functionality, and it will first be used for smart devices like smart watches, smart screens, in-vehicle systems, and smart speakers. Through this implementation Huawei aims to establish an integrated and shared ecosystem across devices, create a secure and reliable runtime environment, and deliver a holistic intelligent experience across every interaction with every device.

HarmonyOS – Four distinct technical features An all-scenario, intelligent experience sets a high bar for connectivity, so HarmonyOS was designed with four distinct technical features to deliver on its promise to consumers.

1. Seamless: First-ever device OS with distributed architecture, delivering a seamless experience across devices By adopting distributed architecture and distributed virtual bus technology, HarmonyOS offers a shared communications platform, distributed data management, distributed task scheduling, and virtual peripherals. With HarmonyOS, app developers won’t have to deal with the underlying technology for distributed apps, allowing them to focus on their own individual service logic. Developing distributed apps will be easier than ever before. Apps built on HarmonyOS can run on different devices while delivering a seamless, collaborative experience across all scenarios.

2. Smooth: Deterministic Latency Engine and high-performance IPC HarmonyOS will address underperformance challenges with a Deterministic Latency Engine and high-performance Inter Process Communication (IPC). The Deterministic Latency Engine sets task execution priorities and time limits for scheduling in advance. Resources will gravitate toward tasks with higher priorities, reducing the response latency of apps by 25.7%. The microkernel can make IPC performance up to five times more efficient than existing systems.

3. Secure: Microkernel architecture that reshapes security and trustworthiness from the ground up HarmonyOS uses a brand-new microkernel design that features enhanced security and low latency. This microkernel was designed to simplify kernel functions, implement as many system services as possible in user mode outside the kernel, and add mutual security protection. The microkernel itself provides only the most basic services like thread scheduling and IPC. Harmony OS’s microkernel design uses formal verification methods to reshape security and trustworthiness from the ground up in a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Formal verification methods are an effective mathematical approach to validate system correctness from the source, while traditional verification methods, such as functional verification and attack simulation, are confined to limited scenarios. Formal methods, by contrast, can use data models to verify all software running paths. HarmonyOS is the first OS to use formal verification in device TEE, significantly improving security. In addition, because the HarmonyOS microkernel has much less code (roughly one-thousandth the amount of the Linux kernel), the probability of attack is greatly reduced.

Unified: Multi-device IDE allows apps to be developed once and deployed across multiple devices Powered by a multi-device IDE, multi-language unified compilation, and a distributed architecture kit, HarmonyOS can automatically adapt to different screen layout controls and interactions, and support both drag-and-drop control and preview-oriented visual programming. This allows developers to more efficiently build apps that run on multiple devices. With a multi-device IDE, developers can code their apps once and deploy them across multiple devices, creating a tightly integrated ecosystem across all user devices.

The HUAWEI ARK Compiler is the first static compiler that can perform on par with Android’s virtual machine, enabling developers to compile a broad range of advanced languages into machine code in a single, unified environment. By supporting unified compilation in multiple languages, the HUAWEI ARK Compiler will help developers greatly improve their productivity. Developer plan and ecosystem development at today’s conference, Huawei also announced the evolution roadmap for HarmonyOS and its kernel. HarmonyOS 1.0 will be first adopted in its smart screen products, which are due to launch later this year.

Over the next three years, HarmonyOS will be optimized and gradually adopted across a broader range of smart devices, including wearables, HUAWEI Vision, and head units for your car.
