Overlord is an interesting series.
We have had plenty of MMO based isekai animes, but this one has a fun quirk whereby the MMO has shut down, which has brought the world to life.
The premise is that a MMO was shut down, yet when it was shut down it seemed to have created a fantasy world somewhere. The kicker, people that are logged in at the time stay in the bodies of their characters. Our protagonist was one of these and his journey has gone from trying to find other trapped people, to being a main part of this world.
We start Season 4 off with Ainz having to deal with paperwork.
We get his inner monologue not knowing what is going on as he puts his seal on a bunch of documents, as he relies on his subordinates to provide the right calls. While trusting your employees might be a good management tactic, signing without understanding is generally a bad idea.
Anyway, he sets himself the goal of making a kingdom where all humans and non-humans are all treated as one and can live in peace and harmony. This is in conflict with his appearance as a massive bad guy, and a lot of his people that are kind of crazy and enjoy destruction.
This season spends a bit more time going into politics as our weird hero Ainz tries to achieve his goals.
There are bits and pieces of this Season I liked and didn’t like.
The timing and location can jump around a bit making it annoying at times to follow. This isn’t always an issue, but the series can be just that little bit all over the place. The animation on the other hand has taken a massive step up.
It’s still a very fan serviced show at times, which in this setting can be a little extra odd, but you know… anime gonna be anime.
On the whole, it is a solid season for a very decent anime series. It’s not the most unique show but it manages to add some unique flavours at times to keep it enjoyable.
Well worth checking out if you like the isekai type shows.
