Below is everything being released, what’s confirmed, and what’s been leaked ahead of time.
A Massive Return on 2 December
Rockstar has confirmed that the original Red Dead Redemption and its zombie companion Undead Nightmare will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on 2 December, complete with free upgrades for existing owners on PS4, Switch, or Xbox One. Players can carry over their old save data and jump straight back into John Marston’s journey.
The new versions include the complete single-player experiences from both titles, plus the bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition. These editions were created in collaboration with Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games, and will also be added to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and the GTA+ Games Library on release day.
Now on Netflix, iOS, and Android
For the first time, Red Dead Redemption will be playable on mobile devices and through Netflix Games. From 2 December, compatible iOS and Android users can download the game with mobile-friendly controls. Netflix subscribers can install and play it directly as part of their membership, making the Western epic more accessible than ever.
It’s one of Rockstar’s biggest pushes into mobile and subscription platforms, opening the door for a new wave of players to experience the franchise.
Enhancements for Modern Consoles
Players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can expect a much smoother experience, with 60 frames per second, HDR support, enhanced image quality, and resolutions up to 4K. On Nintendo Switch 2, Rockstar has tapped into the new hardware to add DLSS, HDR, mouse controls, and the same 60FPS gameplay at high resolution.
This makes it the most polished version of the original game to date, fixing many of the limitations present in the earlier PS4 port.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Switch 2 Edition Leaked and Rated
The long-running rumour finally came true this week as Red Dead Redemption 2 was officially rated by the ESRB for Nintendo Switch 2. The new listing confirms months of speculation and effectively reveals the existence of a Switch 2 edition of RDR2.
While the ESRB description doesn’t point to new content, it does highlight the game’s signature grit. More importantly, the same rating page also lists PS5 and Xbox Series versions of Red Dead Redemption 2, strongly suggesting a next-gen upgrade is on the way.
RDR2 PS5 Next-Gen Patch Seems Almost Certain
Red Dead Redemption 2 already runs on PS5 and Xbox Series through backwards compatibility, but the current version is limited to lower resolutions and 30FPS.
The new ESRB listings hint that a proper next-gen edition is coming, potentially offering higher resolution, true 60FPS performance, and full HDR support. With RDR2 still regarded as one of the best-looking games ever made, even a modest upgrade could make a massive visual difference.
Rockstar hasn’t announced dates yet, but ESRB ratings typically appear when a project is nearing completion. Based on usual timelines, RDR2 Switch 2 and its next-gen versions could arrive anywhere between November 2025 and January 2026. A surprise December release isn’t off the table either.
Free Upgrades Across PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2
Players who already own the PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption can download the PS5 upgrade at no extra cost. The same applies to Xbox and Nintendo Switch players upgrading to Xbox Series or Switch 2. Rockstar is also allowing save transfers, so returning players can continue right where they left off.
Coming to PS Plus Extra in December
Alongside the standalone PS5 release of the original Red Dead Redemption, PlayStation has confirmed it will join the PS Plus Extra lineup on the same day.
Subscribers will get access to the PS5 and PS4 editions, complete with 60FPS, HDR, enhanced image quality, and up to 4K resolution. This makes RDR one of the headline additions for the December catalogue.
A Huge Month for the Red Dead Franchise
With the original Red Dead Redemption returning in a newly enhanced form, Red Dead Redemption 2 gearing up for a next-gen upgrade, and mobile players finally getting access through Netflix, December is shaping up to be one of the biggest months ever for the series.
Whether you’re diving in for the first time or heading back to the frontier for another ride, Rockstar is giving fans plenty to look forward to.
