Armikrog is a stop motion point and click adventure game by Doug TenNapel in conjunction with Pencil Test Studios. This partnership was behind the classic Earthworm Jim franchise, which is quite evident in the art style. Armikrog was funded through KickStarter and is a sequel to The Neverhood a point and click adventure game released in 1996.

You play as a humanoid alien called Tommynaut (Tommy) who is one of three astronauts sent to find the fuel p-tonium. This fuel is required save his people on planet Ixen from certain death. Tommy and his faithful canine companion Beak-Beak crash land on the planet of Spiro 5, a dangerous world believed to contain a source of valuable p-tonium. The dynamic duo is almost eaten by a monstrous creature only to escape and be trapped in a strange building with no obvious way of escape.

Tommy and Beak-Beak’s motivation quickly changes when they stumble across a baby called P and get sucked into a dangerous game of cat and mouse with Vognaut, a brother astronaut who was lost and presumed dead.

It then falls to Tommy to save P from Vognaut and return her to her parents, wherever they may be. Aside from the opening sequence, the story is told to you by giant squid like aliens scattered throughout the game. These creatures speak in an unknown alien language which adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to the story as you are not entirely sure what happened to P or her family. It is not until you turn on the translator at the end of the game that the full story becomes apparent as the squid things repeat their parts but in English this time.

Armikrog is a solid, but somewhat easy puzzle game.

The surrounding environments and set pieces hold the keys to progression and an observant gamer would find no trouble in breezing through the challenges. One downside is that the same puzzles, and by extension solutions, are repeated throughout the game, as such the difficulty decreases as you progress. It is also quite a short game.

I was able to complete it in about 3 hours, including getting stuck on one puzzle for about an hour.

Each room features objects which Tommy interacts with to open another room or obtain an object. However, some objects and areas can only be used or accessed by Beak-Beak. When Beak-Beak accesses a new area the world becomes black and white and pulsates with strange energies that only Beak-Beak can perceive. This is an intriguing and delightful design choice as it provides a contrast to the standard look and feel of the game.

The music is one of the highlights of the game. The music ebbs and flows, with rich and wonderful tones. Even after a short session of play, I found myself humming these little earworms for hours afterwards.

The wonderful music is complimented by great voice acting which really helps to immerse you in the game. The dialogue is a bit stilted with writing that is solid but somewhat generic. However, the voice actors are somehow able to bring the plot to life and get you hooked on the story.

As a big fan of stop motion and clay animation, I absolutely loved the art style of the game. It is a wonderful blend of clay set pieces and part clay animation, part CGI. The art style is very reminiscent of Earthworm Jim, which is not a surprise as they are made by the same people.

This art style is quite welcome as it adds a sense of familiarity to the game and helps to engross you in the story, not to mention looking fantastic. The cut scenes are the best part of the game, as the art style and animation combine to produce wonderful little nuggets of entertainment. I had a little thrill of excitement every time there was a cut scene and a little disappointed every time they ended.

The colour pallet is full of rich earthy colours, which really bring the world to life. Lots of shades of brown scatter the set pieces enhancing the perception of a foreign hostile environment. The use of varying shades of brown also serves to enhance other colours, drawing the eye to objects not necessarily readily apparent and conveying a real sense of importance on otherwise mundane objects.

Armikrog is just like every other puzzle game, in the sense that it is not as fun the second time around as you already know the solutions to the puzzles. However, I still found myself constantly replaying the game if only to watch the cut scenes, or listen to that wonderful music again.

I found the second, third and even fourth play though to be just as enjoyable as the first as I was finding extra information and nuances in the story with every additional play through.

Now released on console, the funky styled claymation game has retained it’s point and click and we see on PC (and with it’s predecessor; The Neverhood). Armikrog is not a challenging game and neither is it long, however, these downsides are made up for in the art style, and music. It is definitely worth a play if only to listen to the music.

It is a good point and click game for both fans and non-fans of the genre and fans of The Neverhood, Skullmonkeys (PS One) and Earthworm Jim alike, but this title also has something for everyone and does not discourage new players with insane difficulty spikes, definitely worth a play.

Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster is a remake of the 2002 game Resident Evil Zero and whose creation is based on nostalgia. It is a game that was released purely to part fans from their hard earned money by the fact they remember playing and enjoying the game when they were younger. While some parts of the game still hold up to today’s standards, others will have you screaming in frustration at your TV and trying to break your controller in half.

The sound design is the best part of the game and yet it is still a mixed bag of great atmospheric sound design and poor voice acting. An eerie soundtrack full of silence, punctuated by footsteps, rain or unknown noises helps to produce a spooky atmosphere which raises the tension of the game and will have you scared to turn every corner. However, it is let down by stilted voice acting and poor cut scenes.

The actor’s delivery of lines appears forced and comical, leading to breaking of the player’s immersion and disinterest in the story.

The suspense is increased by the visual design of the game. An ambiance of fear permeates through the game due to a minimalist colour palate, full of dark greys and browns, combined with minimal lighting and lots of shadows. This design choice enhances the horror level which heightens the player’s anxiety, making them uneasy.

This sense of dread is further exacerbated by the fixed camera angles. You will walk down a corridor and the camera will sit and rigidly watch you from a corner of the room, blocking the view of what is ahead of you, until the camera is passed and it quickly flicks to another angle. This design choice has both a positive and negative effect on the game.

It positively impacts the game by preventing the player from knowing what is in front of them, thus increasing the player’s tension as they step into the unknown. However, it also causes extreme frustration for the player as it prevents them from seeing an enemy who is just off screen which will attack from it’s hidden perspective.

Countless times I was attacked by zombie dogs and died because the camera angle was not conducive to me being able to effectively deal with them. They would leap from off screen and attack me before falling back out of view and repeating the process again. This design choice may have been a result of the technical abilities available at the time, however, it does not hold up to today’s standards, where we now expect a lot more control of the game camera.

The poor camera angles do not help the also poor controls. My main concern with the controls is that you have to do finger gymnastics to be able to attack. While this issue can be overcome with practice, what cannot be overcome is the fact you can only attack in nine directions in front of you, up, middle and down while aiming to the left, centre or right of the character. This would be ok if the enemy could be accurately pinpointed, however, due to the fixed camera angles enemies become almost impossible to locate, making the controls frustrating and unwieldly.

Players control two characters, Rebecca and Billy. Both of whom have advantages and disadvantages (e.g. Billy is strong in attack, while Rebecca can combine herbs) and both characters must be used to solve puzzles. However, I found myself constantly using one character more than the other, not due to favouritism but purely because there was no need for the second character. I feel it would have been a better design choice to forego the character swap mechanic in favour of one protagonist.

If you only play this game for the horror elements, then there is very little on offer for the second play through. Scripted jump scares become ineffectual and tiresome the more you play it. I dislike this style of horror as it feels cheap, relies more on sudden loud noises and plays on the fight or flight response.

I know some people hunger to replay the games of their youth. However, nostalgia generally paints memory with a rose-coloured tint and more often than not the games of yesterday do not hold up in the light of today. Unfortunately, Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster is one of these games.

Some elements, such as atmospheric sound and graphical design are still very good, however, the enjoyment of the game is affected by the poor camera angles, terrible controls, awful voice acting and depressingly cliché jump scares. All in all, this game was better off with the rose tinted memory of yesteryear.

Life is Feudal is a game full of big ideas and big landscapes but suffers from poor execution.

It is a sandbox game with a huge offering of 64-players (max) per server, with a MMO planned for sometime next year and is published by Bitbox Ltd. It is similar, in premise, to Minecraft in that the player is responsible for entertaining themselves by shaping the world around them to better suit their whims. However, it lacks the polish and streamlined gameplay which would make it stand out when compared to other games in this genre.

This game starts off with a real RPG feel to it. You pick a character from 3 different races, then modify their appearance and select their starting stats. Pretty standard stuff. However, once you enter the game world the real potential of the game becomes apparent.

You are dropped into a vast wilderness with no goal and no direction. So what do you do? In short, you survive by any means necessary. Foraging for materials, crafting tools, hunting food and manipulating the environment around you to make your life easier. Every action you do, from foraging to building, will give you experience points. This is an excellent idea as it allows the player to dynamically shape a character to fit their unique play style.

The player is awarded with very little experience points for each action they do. That said the base experience multiplier is 10, but can be set all the way to 1,000 if the players chooses. I can understand why this system was implemented as it prevents players from getting really powerful at every facet of the game and makes them focus on one or two skill trees. The lower end of the experience multiplier not only gives the game a harder factor turns the early gameplay time into a grind as the player is not as generously rewarded for completing tasks.

Each task can be performed by opening a context sensitive actions menu and / or assigning actions such as digging or chopping to a hot-key.

The player then needs to search for the relevant action group for the task they want to perform and then select the task from a sub list connected to this group. An example of this is when I tried to dig a hole. I had to place my cursor on a patch of ground, then open the actions menu and select the terraforming action group. From there I had to select the “lower terrain” option from the sub list. Once selected it would take around two seconds to perform the action. I had to do this about five times before I started to notice a slight depression in the terrain I was trying to dig in. This action and many others are obviously alot easier if you opt to assign to a key.

The sound is probably the best part of this game. The music score has a real medieval vibe to it, violins and cellos ebb and flow, strumming out slow melodies that soar to phenomenal crescendos and fade to soft but intense refrains. This is accompanied by loud footsteps and soft calls of hidden animals, conveying the feeling of a vast, expansive and somewhat hostile world.

While this sound design helps to immerse the player in the world and purveys a sense of scale to the player’s actions, this falls apart when the player interacts with the world around them and the lack of feedback a player receives from their actions, which I will discuss a little later on.

The graphics are a real downside to the game.

Low quality character models, low quality environments and poor, janky animation combine to hinder the player’s engagement with the world around them. The developers would have been better to utilise a less realistic art style, similar to such games as Borderlands and Minecraft. An art style less GPU intensive. This would allow for a more streamlined and polished game, and have the added benefit of becoming its own unique moniker which rises above the original game and becomes iconic.

The poor animation further creates a feeling of frustration due to the unbelievable response of the surrounding environment to player’s actions. The felling of trees fells unsatisfactory and comes across as stupid. You cut down a tree, an act which provides poor visual stimulation in the first place, only to have a log pop into existence beside you and the undamaged tree to fall through this log and disappear from the world. They could have animated this much better and made it more believable to the player that they are actually cutting down a tree.

This is not an isolated case in the game. Digging has a similar unsatisfactory impact on the surrounding environment. If the player decides to dig a hole, their action is met by a sub-par and unbelievable digging animation. Only to have, upon completion of the timer, a minor level difference in the ground which is barely noticeable.

There is very little that will keep someone occupied with this game for any extended period of time. Once leaving, I cannot see myself returning to the world anytime soon. The potential replay factor for this game is minimal at best as the alternative characters do not provide enough of a variation to affect gameplay.

Life Is Feudal is a title with big ideas, but the negatives in the game hamstring it too much to differentiate it from the mass of other sandboxes out there. It does not have any real stand out selling point with its potential getting lost in a sea of mediocrity.

Pulse is more of an experience rather than a game. It engulfs the player in a cocoon of warm, rich tones hindered by undulating optical stimuli, without providing much gameplay more complex than walking and jumping.

The Canadian studio, Pixel Pi Games published this ambitious game with the help of Kickstarter. Their choice of name is quite apt as the game pulsates with excellent ideas and concepts, however, some are poorly executed and these flaws take away from its overall enjoyment.

You play as Eva, a blind girl who has developed the ability to see the world around her using sounds. She is portrayed as a silent protagonist who is more pulled along by the story rather than driving it. There is very little character development and it is difficult to identify with any of the characters. This creates an uninteresting story that adds a real sense of detachment from the game.

The plot is divulged to you by a one-eyed crow in piecemeal and vague sentences which appear to be nonsensical. It is not eminently clear what is happening in the story as the crow’s words flash on screen in short sentences, which dissolve faster than they can be read and are often lost in the background.

Pulse includes interesting gameplay concepts which revolve around sound and vision. The base gameplay is quite simplistic, with very basic and easy puzzles. The player does not interact with the world in any substantial way. You will spend your time moving forward, walking between each check point. The only interaction comes in the form of picking up and throwing these small creatures called Mokos. These creatures are used to solve puzzles and help to open doors.

The real challenge comes from the visual aspects of the game. As the main character is blind, the world materialises around you in pulses of colour as you walk.Winds howl round structures, footsteps echo and reverberate off walls, slowly building the world around you as you move. To stop is to let the world dissolve into darkness punctuated with red eyes ever staring, ever watching you.

It is an intriguing concept as it attempts to model the concept of sound waves painting the world around the vision impaired player.

The downside to this idea impacts gameplay and the player’s enjoyment quite considerably. One consequence of the visuals appearing and dissolving in waves originating from noise sources is that it makes the environment difficult to see. I constantly lost my way, bumped into terrain and had difficulty traversing obstacles all because I could not see or judge distances due to flashes of colour.

These flashes of colour had a secondary negative effect.

These pulsating waves regularly gave me headaches after short periods of play. I can see this causing problems for people with epilepsy. I do not suffer from epilepsy, however, I did feel a lot of discomfort from this visual effect. They could have lessened the impact of the flashes by slowing down the frequency of the pulses and increase the time the images remain on the screen before dissolving to blackness.

The sound is most definitely the highlight of the game. Rich tones permeate and resonate throughout. From your footsteps, to rain drops and the wind howling through openings in some of the environments structures, these lavish and profound tones produce and engrossing and enriching experience. Upon booting the game, I sat listening to the sound of water dripping onto a cave floor for about 5 minutes. I was completely blown away by the intense sound as it reverberated within my headphones. This is one game that must be played using headphones. Speakers do not have the same effect as the beautiful tones are diluted by background noise.

I cannot imagine playing through this game again. While the sound is fantastic, it is overshadowed by the boring gameplay and nauseating visual effects. There was very little that kept me engaged with the game and it became a struggle to finish it. The game could be more engrossing if the visuals didn’t cause headaches. It broke the immersion of the game and prevented engagement with the story.

Pulse is a game of positives and negatives. Small facets of the game are exceptional and will leave you wanting more.

However, the interesting and exciting parts are eclipsed by the unpleasant visual effects and insipid storyline. If you do not get nausea from pulsating lights, colours and images, you may be able to find more enjoyment from this game then I did. However, I can’t recommend this game to people who suffer from epilepsy or sever motion sickness.
