Cyberpunk 2077 Hits 40 Million Copies Sold Almost Six Years After Launch

Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold 40 million copies worldwide, developer CD Projekt Red confirmed on 3 July 2026. The milestone, announced on the game’s official channels, arrives nearly six years after the RPG’s rocky 2020 launch, as the studio rebrands and lines up an Edgerunners anime return.

The figure counts copies sold both separately and as part of the Ultimate Edition bundle.
A Long Road Back
The 40 million total was shared in a post on the game’s official X account, reading “40 million copies sold” as of 3 July 2026. The Phantom Liberty expansion, meanwhile, had already passed 10 million copies as of CD Projekt’s Q1 2025 earnings report. The numbers cap a remarkable turnaround for a game that launched to heavy criticism in 2020, before a lengthy run of updates, including the 2.0 overhaul that shipped alongside Phantom Liberty, restored much of its reputation.

A Rebrand and What Comes Next
The milestone lands during a period of change at the studio. In late June 2026, parent company CD Projekt confirmed it would rename itself CD Projekt Red to match its development arm. Co-chief executive Michal Nowakowski has been candid about the game’s launch damage. “I’m convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that’s a fair thing,” he said. “But I do hope we will be able to make it back, if not with The Witcher 4, then with whatever comes next.” Cyberpunk’s cultural footprint continues to grow, too, with the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series set for a Fall 2026 return.
