Rust’s Common Ground Update Adds Clans, Rentable Shops and Apartments

Facepunch Studios has rolled out Rust’s July update, dubbed “Common Ground,” introducing two new Monuments, a long-awaited Clan system, and a batch of Softcore mode adjustments. The update is live now for the popular survival game, according to PCGamesN.
The headline additions are the Apartment Complex and Rentable Shops, both new Monuments designed to give players fresh options for settling in or making money after a wipe. Alongside these, Rust now has a formal Clan structure that lets larger groups organise with defined roles and permissions.
New Monuments: Apartments and Shops
The Apartment Complex allows players to rent rooms ranging from basements to penthouses, each offering its own perks. As PCGamesN reports, players can also hunt for a master key, opening up opportunities to steal from other renters or from the second new Monument.
That second Monument, Rentable Shops, lets entrepreneurial survivors set up storefronts, stock and modify their own inventory, and even customise the shop’s signage to reflect their personal style. It’s a new way for players to generate income beyond traditional raiding and looting.
Clans arrive at last
Perhaps the biggest structural change is the introduction of Clans, an expanded version of Rust’s existing team system. According to Facepunch’s official patch notes, “Clans are a more advanced version of teams where you can have more members with different roles/permissions. There is a separate clan chat channel and announcement/MoTD text for communicating with clan members.”
Clans are managed through new Clan Tables and give members added functionality, such as seeing nearby clanmates’ locations directly on the map. Notably, the feature is not available in Hardcore mode, keeping that mode’s traditionally stricter rules intact.
Softcore tweaks and raid timing changes
Softcore mode players get a resource boost with a new 2x multiplier applied to animals, food, ore, and wood, making early progression noticeably faster. Facepunch has also adjusted when raiding can occur, restricting it to a set window between 6pm and 9pm server local time, as long as players are within a Tool Cupboard’s radius.
That change gives base-builders and decorators more predictable downtime to focus on constructing and styling their bases without the constant threat of an ongoing raid. PCGamesN notes the update also includes new player sprint animations for rifles and one-handed melee weapons, plus 27 additional wallpaper designs for base decoration.
Beyond the headline features, the Common Ground update ships with a wider set of general improvements and bug fixes. Rust remains one of Steam’s most consistently active survival titles, and updates like this continue to expand the ways players can interact with each other, whether through cooperation, commerce, or conflict.
