KonoSuba: God’s blessing on this Wonderful World! is an anime series as bonkers as the title is long where a boy dies and goes to a MMO like world.
Here he winds up in a chaotic adventuring party with some really out there personalities. In that party is one of the best characters, Megumin. Well, Konosuba: An Explosion On This Wonderful World! takes a step back, and tells the backstory of Megumin.
The series kicks off with a young Megumin as she accidentally releases a dragon which starts going bananas. She witnesses a powerful wizard as she destroys the dragon with her powerful explosion magic. Since Megumin accidentally helped out, the wizard asks if she can grant her something. This is where we remember first hand about the fan-service in this series, as Megumin, who is a kid, asks to have big breasts like the wizard. I know the original series has heaps of fan-service, and to be fair it’s toned down here, but it’s still very much in your face.
Anyway, the series then follows Megumin as she goes to school to learn magic.
She of course is obsessed with explosion magic, which is super advanced and super specialized. This gets her in trouble, but still doesn’t stop her trying to learn this. As we know from the original series, she becomes really good at this magic, and this magic alone. So in essence, the whole series we know where she is going to get to. That big scary dragon becomes a cat, which is a thing, and really should help you understand the tone you will get here.
Now to be fair, the journey is what you are here for, not the destination. Like the original series it is full of silly humour, and plenty of action. It’s exactly the kind of series I enjoy when I want some cheap laughs, some great animation, and some fantastic fight sequences. It has all of these things in spades.
If you haven’t watched KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!, then Konosuba: An Explosion On This Wonderful World! Is actually a pretty good place to start. Enjoying watching Megumin’s journey totally fits the vibes, and you can go straight from this into the main series if you enjoy it. Don’t expect too much depth and you should be in for a good time here.
It’s not the greatest anime, and not as great as KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!. Despite that, there is plenty to enjoy here, and it’s just what I wanted from a backstory like this.
