Blizzard has officially dropped the “2” from Overwatch 2, with the game now returning to its original name, Overwatch. The change was confirmed during Overwatch Spotlight 2026, alongside a wide-ranging overhaul aimed at redefining the game’s future.

The announcement was first teased publicly by the official @PlayOverwatch account, which posted “Old name, new era. Welcome back ‘Overwatch’” during the event. Blizzard later reinforced the message during the showcase itself, making it clear the rename is permanent and effective immediately.
Blizzard’s Reason For Dropping The “2”
Blizzard framed the name change as more than a branding tweak. In its statement, the company said Overwatch is “more than just a digit” and described 2026 as a turning point in how the team thinks about the universe, its characters, and long-term support.
According to Blizzard leadership, the sequel label had begun to feel restrictive, especially as the game moves toward a single, evolving platform rather than distinct sequel cycles. Returning to the original name is meant to signal continuity rather than replacement.
A Reset After A Rocky Sequel Era
Overwatch 2 launched with strong initial interest but struggled to maintain momentum. Player criticism around monetisation, shifting design priorities, and the eventual cancellation of the PvE Hero mode left the sequel with a mixed legacy.
Several outlets covering the Spotlight noted that Blizzard appears eager to draw a line under that period. By reverting to Overwatch, the studio is effectively resetting expectations while keeping the existing player base intact.
How The Name Change Ties Into 2026 Content
The rename arrives alongside a year-long narrative arc called The Reign of Talon, which will play out from Season 1 through Season 6. Blizzard has also committed to releasing ten new heroes across 2026, starting with five at the launch of Season 1 on February 10.
