Samsung Electronics Australia has today announced its return to Vivid Sydney for the second year in a row with a technology-enabled, playground featuring not one, but two large-scale activations including the Samsung Electric Playground and Samsung Galaxy Studio in its most ambitious Vivid Sydney spectacle yet.

The two exhibitions will transform over 3000 meters-squared of Circular Quay’s First Fleet Park and the adjacent Foundation Hall as never before and includes a landmark partnership with Instagram to showcase outstanding Vivid Sydney content being shared on the platform and provide tips on how to capture the magic of the festival when the lights illuminate Sydney on Friday, 24th of May 2019.

Samsung’s Vice President of IT and Mobile Garry McGregor promises Samsung’s activation will set a new standard for ambition, engagement and interaction: “The power of technology to open up new worlds through innovation is a constant source of inspiration for us. In returning for a second year to Vivid Sydney, we’ve challenged ourselves and harnessed the power of mobile technology to create not just a memorable cultural experience, but uniquely sharable and unlike anything festival goers will have ever seen before.”

Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said: “Vivid Sydney is a global event that attracts 2.25 million visitors and significant media and social media attention from around the world. As the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere, Vivid Sydney continues to position the Harbour City as the hub of creative industries of Asia and the Pacific.”

The first space, the Samsung Electric Playground invites guests into a celebration of light, sound and imagination powered by advanced mobile technology. With a multitude of experiences spanning an area over four basketball courts in size, festival goers can free their inner child and explore Galaxy S10-inspired attractions. These include a field of over 320 dynamic light poles, 23 of which will they can control directly; a 6.5-metre illuminated Infinity
Slide; and an elevated view of picturesque Sydney Harbour from the Sky Walk platform amongst other must-see attractions.

The Samsung Galaxy Studio arrives from a global tour including London, Barcelona and Dubai just in time for the festival and delivers its own array of truly interactive moments. The immersive space boasts tailored light experiences that are inspired by guests own unique irises and heartbeats generating their very own installations. The Samsung Galaxy Studio also features a one-of-a-kind interactive art piece by up-and-coming Australian artist George Rose.

In addition, and for the first time globally, the Samsung Galaxy Studio has partnered with Instagram to make the space the most Instagram-able experience at Vivid Sydney.

Instagram’s specialist trainers will be on hand at select times throughout the festival to teach guests how to expertly capture and share their Vivid Sydney content. Destination NSW CEO and Vivid Sydney Executive Producer Sandra Chipchase said: “Vivid Sydney is an event that celebrates technology and innovation, so it is fitting to have Samsung returning as partner of the festival this year. The Samsung Electric Playground and Samsung Galaxy Studio will showcase cutting-edge technology in an incredibly engaging way, and we know that visitors to Vivid Sydney will be surprised and delighted by the installation in First Fleet Park and Foundation Hall.”

The Samsung Electric Playground and Samsung Galaxy Studio will be open to the public from Friday, 24th of May until Saturday, 15th of June 2019. For more information, head to the Official Website.

Gaming Laptops are one of the few categories of traditional PCs that are growing, and in this niche market we are seeing some interesting experimentation in what these laptops look like.

Are they all-out behemoths meant as desktop replacements? Are they stealth machines that look like normal ultrabooks, but can connect to an external GPU when required? Are they trying for a goldilocks in the middle? That last category is the hardest to do, and it’s what the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR II that I have to review sets out as its challenge. I reviewed the SCAR II with an NVIDIA GTX 1070, though there is a slightly newer version with the RTX GPUs, giving you ray-tracing, deep learning super-sampling and other Turing architecture goodies, but that version of the laptop wasn’t available at the time of review.

My review laptop was outfitted with an Intel Core i7-8750H 6 Core/12 Thread CPU with 32GB of RAM and the aforementioned NVIDIA GTX 1070 all running on Windows 10 Pro, which I updated to the latest Windows 10 October (1809) update. All testing was done on NVIDIA drivers 417.71.

The SCAR II features a bright, rich 1080p 144Hz screen surrounded by thin bezels, but unfortunately there is no Freesync, adaptive sync nor G-Sync, so while the higher hertz displays are always welcome this is an omission that will drag it down in comparison to other displays. Nevertheless, even just in normal productivity tasks a high refresh monitor makes for a better experience overall, and makes it hard to go back to “just” a 60 hertz display.

Flanking the left and right side of the SCAR II are a good range of ports, including three USB-A, one USB-C (not thunderbolt unfortunately) a standard HDMI, mini Displayport and Ethernet port. Unfortunately there are no ports on the back of the device, which is taken up almost entirely with exhausts. While there may still be a need for a port hub or dongle for specialist ports, this laptop should have you covered no matter what you wanted to connect to it.

But will you want to connect an external keyboard? The keyboard is an essential part of any laptop, and for a gaming laptop it has to be comfortable for long periods of use while being fast, responsive, and have great feedback. At the same time, it has to also be a great keyboard for everyday typing, web surfing and other uses, and in this regard the keyboard on the SCAR II was generally good if a little mushy, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the half-width number pad and arrow keys. I do appreciate ROG trying to cram as much functionality in as possible though the overall ergonomics do suffer slightly as a result.

The SCAR II was a strong performer across a range of titles, thanks to its powerful CPU, which hit around 3.9GHz under load, and its GTX 1070 married to a 1080p display. Compared to our review of the Alienware 17 R5, the games I benchmarked has been updated slightly to focus on slightly more recent releases.

As you’d expect, the SCAR II had no trouble hitting 1080p and 60 frames per second in pretty much every game or benchmark that you can throw at it. And thanks to the 144Hz screen, you’re able to make good use of any available headroom above those numbers by allowing the laptop to throw everything it’s got at putting as many frames on screen as it can. While 144FPS is still a tall order even at 1080p in many titles, feeling the benefit of huge frame rates in first person shooters such as Counter Strike: Go or Fortnite, and in racing games such as Forza Horizon 4 makes for a more fluid gaming experience, with better response time and lower input lag. I also saw strong performance in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 multiplayer and Insurgency: Sandstorm at 1080p on High settings.

In 3D action titles like Shadow of the Tomb Raider the SCAR II also performed above the magical 60FPS mark (though without adaptive sync on the display it may be better to target 72FPS – half the monitor’s native refresh rate – rather than 60) and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey manages 66FPS on Ultra.

Overall, performance is strong across a range of titles, and while the NVIDIA GTX 1070 is a slightly older GPU, it still manages to perform decently in modern AAA games at the display’s 1080p display.

One of the key characteristics of gaming laptops is to put as much as in as small a form factor as possible, all while attempting to minimise thermal throttling and noise. The SCAR II attempts to have its cake and eat it too, with a light, relatively small case that was easy to carry around and slip into a backpack. And while the intake and exhaust vents are larger than on a normal laptop, it’s not so obvious that it would look out of place in a coffee shop or in a lecture hall.

For the most part thermals and noise were kept to a minimum during normal use, where it was almost inaudible. Certainly, once you opened up a demanding title running at over 100FPS the fans would kick in and the whole device heated up significantly, but that’s only to be expected, even on a large gaming desktop. I didn’t notice any particularly bad thermal throttling, though the noise coming out of the SCAR II attested to the load that it was under.

The SCAR II is a good all rounder that provides solid performance in a form factor and weight that belies what it is capable of. And if the same thermals, noise and CPU is available with the new models features the NVIDIA RTX 2070 and 2080 mobile GPUs, then the main shortcoming of this laptop in terms of its power profile will be balanced out. While some areas could be improved, such as the touch-too-gamery camo pattern on the keyboard and trackpad area, and a lack of an adaptive sync option to match the 144hz display, the SCAR II can be recommended for a gaming laptop that successfully balances, size, power and portability.

Liisa Matinvesi-Bassett, New Zealand country manager for PriceSpy, says: “For two years running, our historical data insights suggest New Zealanders are doing the majority of their online shopping the last Monday before Christmas and on Christmas Eve*.

“Although last minute shopping can be rather frantic and stressful, for those willing to wait, this tactic can sometimes pay off for the consumer.

“For example, our data shows the closer you get towards Christmas, the more money consumers can potentially save on product purchases. However, people need to be aware of when those cheaper times are and appreciate late orders may not arrive in time.”

“Last year, our data revealed the cheapest days to shop online were 14th and 15th of December. Prices then quickly increased after the 15th of December and peaked on the 18th and 19th of December. Interestingly, after the 19th of December the price of many products dropped significantly, helping create last-minute sales opportunities for retailers. The cheapest overall day however was Christmas Eve**.”

Whilst last minute Christmas shopping can help consumers save money at an otherwise expensive time of year, PriceSpy recommends shoppers should plan ahead for all of their Christmas purchases.

Liisa adds: “We couldn’t recommend more strongly the need for consumers to use a price comparison site or app, to not help them save money and make sure they are not paying over the odds. For example, many products receive a bigger discount the closer we get towards Christmas. Others however, such as those listed under the shopping category of ‘kids & toys’, tend to increase in price instead.”

“To help Kiwi consumers get a more overall transparent shopping experience, PriceSpy encourages shoppers to download the PriceSpy app and set up price alerts for the items they are looking to buy.
In 2016, PriceSpy witnessed a 61% per cent year on year increase in visitor numbers on Black Friday and last year this number grew a further 14 per cent.

Similarly, 17 per cent of the top 100 products listed on our site last Black Friday, also increased in price by an average nine per cent.

“We therefore couldn’t recommend strongly enough that consumers need to do their research ahead of time, as there’s nothing worse than making a purchase to later find you could have bought it cheaper on another day.

“We suggest consumers start using a price comparison site early, to help them get a feel for what kind of products will carry the biggest discounts, as this will help to save time searching on the day.”

Legendary drone manufacturers DJI and Intel have joined forces with Ryze Robotics to bring us the most sophisticated mini-drone available today.

The Ryze Tello is a tiny quad-copter that weighs in at only 80g and measures a svelte 175mm x 175mm. Despite it’s small size the drone is capable of capturing 5MP images and 720p video at 30fps. It also has a removable battery that gives the drone a very usable flight time of around ten minutes.

The Tello’s light weight puts it in the Australian Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA) sub-100g category, exempting it from all the usual regulations such as flying near airports etc. In the eyes of CASA, the Tello is just a toy. Whilst it is easy to fly and designed with young pilots in mind, it’s an amazing device that anyone can have fun with.

The stated range is 100m with a maximum altitude of 10m. Whilst I agree with the 10m, or thereabouts, height, I could only get a 25m range. The Tello is controlled via an Android or Apple mobile device running the Tello app. The mobile device is connected to the Tello via Wi-Fi, controlling the aircraft and displaying a direct video feed from the on-board camera.

The drone can be set up with either a Mode 1 or Mode 2 control scheme. The lack of Mode 3 is a little disappointing, but for a drone the only costs $170 AUD or $200 NZD, you really can’t complain. It’s a shame the kit doesn’t come with a proper controller as standard, but an optional Bluetooth controller is available for more precise maneuvering.

The Tello has two speed settings, with the slower speed aimed at beginners. After a bit of practice most pilots will want to switch to the faster speed, with the most adventurous also adjusting the maximum attitude angle for faster control responses.

Unlike it’s DJI cousins, the Tello doesn’t have GPS for position hold, instead the optical sensors underneath the drone gives it a rock-solid hover. The lightweight drone is perfect for flying indoors and outside on a calm day.

The drone is remarkably robust, able to withstand mild knocks and crashes without damage. The kit comes with some replacement propellers and a removal tool if it takes a big hit. The Tello is light enough that should something go wrong it’s not going to drop like a stone. Whilst the prop guards are removable, I’d recommend that they are left them on, especially for indoor flying.

The little device comes with some built-in flight modes selectable from the Tello app. With one button press you can launch the drone by gently throwing it, get it to record whilst flying away from you, fly in a circle whilst recording, record a video whilst spinning around or just have it bouncing up and down.

If you really want to show the Tello’s abilities of to your friends, the 8D Flips mode is the way to go. A swipe of your finger will have the drone flipping in the direction of your swipe, over the front, back, left, right and over all four diagonals. In the correct light, due to the precision of the optical sensors, it does all this without losing altitude or shifting position.

With the Tello, Ryze Robotics provide full support for STEM learning by making the drone programmable. With the aid of some extra downloadable libraries, the Tello can be controlled via the popular MIT-developed programming app Scratch 2. The easy to understand visual coding tool can be used to generate simple scripts for the Tello.

The Ryze Tello is a fun little drone, perfect for beginners or anyone wishing to fly a drone without the financial outlay of one of DJI’s more feature-packed machines. The sub-100g weight means you can fly it how you want and when you want without breaking Australian CASA regulations. The Tello is easy to fly, surprisingly nimble and packed with a pretty capable camera. Al in all the little drone offers outstanding value for money.
