When Dredd came out I was really hoping that we had a huge franchise on our hands.

That’s not just because we had a kiwi playing Judge Dredd, I just enjoyed the hell out of it.

Unfortunately, the masses didn’t flock to it and so 12 years later I am still waiting for that sequel. Fortunately, you can enjoy this movie in a Special Edition so it was time to see if it is as great as I remembered it being.

If you don’t know Dredd, it is based on an iconic comic character. After an apocalyptic war, much of America is an irradiated wasteland. There is a gigantic city protected by massive walls that hosts an insanely big population. In this post apocalyptic world there is a special kind of cop called a Judge. They do everything from catching the criminal, to determining guilt, and handing out punishments. These punishments vary from completing a sentence in iso-cubes, to execution.

Our story kicks off with the titular Dredd, played by Karl Urban, as he dispenses some futuristic justice. He is then assigned a rookie to test in the field. They choose a call out for a triple murder in one of the massive 200 story housing blocks.

They get there and assess that they died falling down from really high while under the influence of a drug called Slo-Mo. Slo-Mo is a new drug that slows down time in your mind and enhances your senses. As such that would have been a tortuous fall.

Dredd and the rookie find themselves a suspect they want to take in for questioning.

The suspect belongs to the Ma-Ma gang, which not only is based in that slum, but is also the manufacturer and distributor of Slo-Mo. As such they lock down the slums massive blast doors to capture and kill the Judges, and the movie really kicks off!

The action has the Judges having to ascend the tower level by level to get to Ma-Ma herself. The vibes of the movie is very akin to The Raid movie which released in 2011, except less martial artsy and more sci-fi shooty.

Dredd does a great job of constantly raising the stakes and challenges thrown at Judge Dredd making it a progressive build up to a satisfying ending. There are some amazing visual effects, which are really put to the test when it shows perspectives from Slo-Mo users.

These scenes get some awesome gore that is brutal, but not off-putting graphic. It’s more cleverly done blood splatters and less, well you know, organs and gore. This makes the movie a visual feast to really just turn your brain off and enjoy.

These kinds of action movies really are made for 4K where you can enjoy the enhanced colours and crisp visuals.  Fortunately this release comes with multiple options for you. From the Bluray, to the stunning 4K Bluray, to even including the 3D edition of the movie.  No idea how many people still have 3D capable TV’s, but the option is there. Also included are a few decent features including a great short clip with the creator of the original comics.

Dredd is a fantastic action movie that is visually stunning. This edition comes with all the versions to ensure you can watch the best version that your hardware offers.  Cased in an awesome hardcover box with some photo cards, it’s a no brainer if you enjoy fun SciFi action.

Now please please please can we have a sequel?

I remember seeing Drag Me to Hell in the cinema… 15 years ago.

Oh damn I am old.  All I remember from it was some great funny moments, some surprisingly tense moments, and some great acting. Well now 15 years later, I figured I would revisit it on blu-ray and see if it holds up…15 years… what even is time?

Drag Me to Hell follows Christine, who is working in her job as a loan officer. She wants to get a sweet promotion but is told that she is too soft and needs to make some hard decisions.

Unfortunately and old woman comes in needing another extension on her loan.  Normally Christine would allow this, but she decides to get tough and declines this one. The poor old woman is offended so she drops a curse on Christine. You know, normal dispute tribunal type punishment.

Christine very quickly realises the curse is real, and so she decided to go to try get it removed from the old lady. Unfortunately, the old lady died before she could get to her and the curse gets even more intense.

I won’t touch the plot too much more, but I will say the ending is exceptional, unexpected, and in hindsight very funny.

So for the most part the movie is a paint by numbers horror movie.

What makes it unique is the damn excellent humour involved.  Everything from insane violence, to a goat bite, it made me chuckle out loud more than horror comedies normally do.

Time hasn’t been kind on the CGI which is pretty below average at times, but fortunately it doesn’t massively affect the movie. If anything it kinda adds a bit to the tone of the silly humour. Fortunately the acting is really solid, which also makes the silly moments that much funnier.

This Special Edition includes the theatrical release and an unrated cut.

Since this is a horror comedy, the unrated cut adds a whole lot.  Heaps of gore is added and some great longer scenes which easily makes it the better version of the movie. Then there are heaps of really solid bonus features going into the films process.

On the whole, Drag Me to Hell: Special Edition Bluray is a fantastic addition to any horror lovers Blu-ray shelf. The bulk of it holds up, and what doesn’t adds some fun charm.  The unrated edition adds some real value for someone who hasn’t watched in a while.

It has been quite a few years since I last saw Grindhouse, but my long time memory was I loved Death Proof, but didn’t really get Planet Terror.

So with the opportunity to check them out again, I was so eager. That’s a great time for the 4 discs of awesome that is Grindhouse – Special Edition.

If Grindhouse is new to you, it is a cracking experience. There are two movies in one cracking experience.

Robert Rodriguez created the fascinating horror comedy Planet Terror. At the end of that you get to enjoy some fake trailers made by other famous directors, and that leads you into the incredible action thriller Death Proof by Quentin Tarantino.

The best way to enjoy this series is to put three hours aside, and watch the full experience in one go.

But it’s OK if you don’t have that kind of time, both movies are totally independent and watched on their own. Even better, this collection has one disc with the full experience, then 2 discs have extended versions of the respective movies. Just wanna watch Death Proof tonight? Check out the extended version on one of the discs.

Speaking of Death Proof, it is as good as I remember.

Kurt Russell plays Stuntman Mike. Stuntman Mike likes to meet ladies, and murder them with his stunt car which is built to be death proof. It’s an insane movie that has moments of gore, but so much more than that. The incredible New Zealand stuntwoman Zoe Bell plays one of the main characters. This means she gets to take part in some amazing acting, as well as doing her actual stunts for some wicked practical car action. A slowish start pays the hell off in an insanely excellent second half.

Planet Terror is a chaotic movie that, after watching again, I really like.

We follow a few different stories as a virus is breaking out. Watch chaos unleash in a hospital and then the streets, and as you will have seen from all the posters, results in Rose McGowan having a gun for her leg. It’s really funny at times, it’s excessively violent at times, and on the whole is a cracking horror comedy.

This collection includes the three forementioned discs, and a fourth that is loaded with extra Special Features. There is everything from general behind the scenes stuff to Robert Rodriguez showing how to make a brisket. There is so much to like there, but one highlight is a piece about Zoe Bell. It was really interesting to learn about how she got her big break on Kill Bill, which is what lead to Tarantino opting to bring her in for an acting role.

Grindhouse is an excellent experience on its own.  This collection offers you so much more, from the versions of the movies themselves, to the extra features. If Grindhouse isn’t in your collection yet, then this is a great way to add it.

Astro’s A30 series is back from a galaxy far, far away with a very Special Edition Mandalorian model.

Produced by Logitech within their G Series, the Astro A30 Wireless was first announced back in October last year (2022).

Now having embraced the Force the truly wireless full head sized gaming headset gives you two ways to connect, direct bluetooth or via the 2.4GHz USB dongle.

The Astro A30 Mandalorian Special Edition allows you to mix your wireless connection too. If you’re wanting to pump up the jam on Spotify while gaming, you can. The mixed connectivity uses Logitech own LIGHTSPEED technology and can have a couple of connections going simultaneously to the likes of connecting up to your PC via the supplied dongle and pairing up to your mobile via bluetooth.

The model I reviewed is for Xbox or PC, however you can connect to mobile (Android or iOS) but I recommend downloading the app to get the most out of the Astro A30.

if you want to wire yourself in there is a 3.5mm port.

Audio is top shelf driven by 40mm drivers. Deep rumbles, atmospheric environmental sounds and high pitched whizzes of bullets as the pass near you.

The boom mic is removable, so if you want to simply rock out, or game without chatter you can. There’s tactile buttons on the right ear cup and a USB-C charging port.

Battery life is is close to top range, coming in at around 27 hours. I’ve exceeded this already, with around 4 to 5 hours of gameplay in just over a week, daily, on a single full charge and the headset is still going strong.

This headset is essentially an Astro A30, with customisable ear cup plates, or tags, that clip in to either side of the headphone. What I suspect is that we may see different tags being released in future so you can tailor your Astro A30 to something more you.

The Astro A30 Mandalorian Special Edition of course has Mando tags and a rather elite looking carry case too.

With a sound output that would please the Rebels and voice clarity for any galactic adventure, the Astro A30 Mandalorian Special Edition is a must for any serious gamer and Star Wars fan.

Dante is back. Again.

A re-release of one the most tongue-in-cheek humored bad-ass demon slaying games of 2019 sees Virgil, Dante and more do some serious demon slaying.

Now at the fifth game in the series, Devil May Cry is a third person Japanese styled hack ‘n’ slash where a Nephilim called Dante would take down legions of Demons, with a love hate relationship echoing throughout the the entire series with his brother Virgil.

When Devil May Cry 4 released I was enchanted by the then, next gen visuals and fluid gameplay and this solidified my commitment to the franchise, which I was afraid would tire itself out after an average Devil May Cry 2 and an ‘ok’ third instalment.

Then, 2013 saw the franchise reboot. While the Devil May Cry ‘DMC’ reinvigorated the franchise for an entirely new audience, die hard fans felt that it could be heading in the wrong direction.

So, Capcom have made Devil May Cry 5 a title that seems as though it’s a love letter to the fans. And now that we are in the new generation of gaming consoles, a Special Edition has released offering up 4K (8K up-scalable) version with all DLC.

Set with a broken timeline you will take on a series of Missions, (20 in total – excluding the prologue and 13 Secret Missions that you need to find), in which Dante’s for ‘hire service’ business, called Devil May Cry, is reinvigorated with a new job.

The client is a mysterious and dark chap only known as V.

Joined by Lady and Trish, Dante accepts this new job to take down Urizen… but of course there’s a lot more going on than what it seems.

Devil May Cry 5 delves very deeply in to the Devil May Cry lore and a few answers to long waited questions surface, which I will not reveal here.

At Level, or Mission specific areas, players will take on the roles of more than one character. Nero, V and Dante are all playable. Each character has their specific skill sets and weapons.

These skills and weapons too can be upgraded via collected Red Orbs throughout the game.

Play well, fight well, slay even better and your combat rank and overall playstyle increases via a A to D Rank. Then there’s ‘Savage’ and the almighty ‘Super Sexy Style’, this not only retains that Arcade feel of the originals, but also gives you more Orbs to squander on your upgrades.

Nero is the first playable and you’ll get to grips with him real easily. He has a special weapon that can interchange (I am not going to say here what that is – as it will be a spoiler to the reboot of DMC – 2013 for those that have not yet played it).

The interchangeable weapons can actually impede or improve Nero’s combat – and I think everyone that plays this new edition; Devil May Cry 5 is going to smirk at the Mega-Man inclusion.

V, a gothic dark brooding character with an overwhelming love for poetry only has a metal cane in his arsenal. It’s useless against anything. Luckily, V is a master of the dark arts and has two demon pets and a hulking ‘Nightmare’ that he can call upon to do the fighting for him. Again, the abilities and skills aswell as strength of these two demon pets is fully upgradeable.

Dante uses his many and varied demon powers, swords, ebony & ivory and one of the baddest weapons in a game yet, a possessed motorbike. And he also has one killer hat that sure gives him some ‘smooth criminal’ moves…

As the story runs through, Dante acquires a few more bits. These are also added to his ‘inventory’ and can also receive upgrades aswell.

To keep you on the alert, each playable character has a differing set up to not only wield their cache of armament but also for their combos and such the like. While Dante is by far the best character to play as, some of his combos and weapons can be a little tricky.

If you love a good hack ‘n’ slash with a slight Japanese flavor definitely don’t go past the Devil May Cry games.

While Devil May Cry 5 could easily be a standalone in it’s own right, I still recommend to get yourself up to speed on the series – there is only so much that the flashbacks and prologues can do.

Devil May Cry 5 – Special Edition has been made all that better with the added goodness and for me, a personal pleasure to replay all over again.

Devil May Cry, a tale of two demonic brothers in an eternal feud with with eachother.

A founding franchise for PlayStation back in the days of PS2 – the third chapter even had a complete re-do for the current gen and now Devil May Cry 3 (DMC3) which originally released in 2005 has ported over to Nintendo’s Switch.

The battle between the half demon brothers continues from the first two games; Virgil and Dante, the sons of Sparda.

DMC3 focuses mostly on Dante and the demon slaying and hack n slashing takes place on earth, where Dante and his father had been protecting mankind from their own, only Dante’s twin, Virgil was true to his lineage and fought against the human race with his dark minions.

The demonic battle begins as the two siblings rivalry explodes before you.

Not long after setting up his ‘Devil May Cry’ investigative business when a stranger walks in with an invitation to Dante from Virgil. There is no time to accept or decline before demons besiege his place of business.

Add to this hell-fueled action is a new character called Lady, a demon hunter, who is determined to wipe out all demonic entities, including Dante. There is also another mysterious character called Arkham that Dante encounters, whose intentions may not be what they seem.

Taking a more third person action taste rather than the innovative system from the first two games, players take on Dante through destroyed cities, decrepit buildings, dark depths in the ground where evil guardians lay and above the ground in towering structures and more.

The camera work that featured in the previous original titles is there slightly, but this time players have more options with weaponry, allowing Dante to equip himself with up to four different types of weapons that can be selected easily throughout combat. Weapons include mighty blades, shotguns, pistols, plus. Combos can be performed aswell as special moves, likened to the original game, where Dante can mount himself in the air briefly and shoot away. Attacks can also be powered up for more impact.

While the average demon that players face is relatively the same throughout, the larger foes such as Guardians and major demonic creatures are a mix of awe and mayhem. Some have the ability to change, use powerful weapons of their own, disappear into smoke or fly.

Gameplay is fantastic and extremely immersive. It’s fair to say that the graphics of the FMV moments has dated but in-game flawless, even when the Switch is docked to a large screen.

The Switch version is the ‘Special Version’ – character art is viewable from the get go and you do have the ability to change your skill-set from gun wielding trickster through to a stabby swordmaster and more on the fly.

DMC3 also has an element of RPG. Collect Orbs and spend up on new items and abilities.

The entire Devil May Cry trilogy (DMC, DMC2 and DMC3) previously released on Switch. If you want to go directly to the more traditional action title in the saga you can as DMC3 is now a standalone and just as good as it was back in the day.

Stylishly Slay the Seven Hells army and experience the infamous demon-hunter Dante’s origin story in the fan-favorite stylish action game Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition, has been announced for release on Nintendo Switch.

Devil May Cry 3 serves as a prequel for the iconic action series, unfolding years before the original Devil May Cry with a younger version of Dante.

This origin story explores the journey leading up to and culminating in Dante’s face-off against his twin brother, Vergil, who is set on unlocking a gate to the demonic realm. Dante must use his trademark sword Rebellion and dual pistols Ebony and Ivory to stop Vergil and prevent the world from becoming infested by demons. Along the way, players will gain insight into many aspects of the series from the first encounter with fan-favorite Lady as well as the beginnings of Dante’s shop and origins of the series name.

Devil May Cry 3 continued the series’ trademark for intense, non-stop action with flair, while introducing the new “style” based combat system with six selectable options including Swordmaster and Gunslinger that change up the gameplay. Each style has its own range of features, and players can power up their favorite style for increased special attack abilities, bringing an extra level of strategy to the action. Devil May Cry 3 also introduced the ability to switch between currently equipped weapons on the fly for additional combat freedom.

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition brings the full stylish action package to Nintendo Switch, offering the addition of Vergil as a playable character and the 9,999 floors of the “Bloody Palace” survival mode. The system’s handheld mode offers the added flexibility of playing on-the-go for the first time.
