As a new year rolls around so do a new wave of much anticipated smartphones,

Samsung’s flagship of 2021 was the S21 series. The S21 Ultra 5G being the big daddy of them all.

So what if a handset is released that takes all of the best bits from the S Series and adds them in to a compact phone? That’s exactly what Samsung has done with the first high end device of 2022, the Galaxy S21 FE (Fan Edition) 5G.

With a mobile gamer, content creator pleasing 120Hz refresh rate the 6.4 inch device boasts a vibrantly stunning Dynamic AMOLED (x2) screen.

Sharp, crystal clarity and a refresh rate that’s going to get you in the game.

On board storage weighs in at 128GB or 256GB and 8GB RAM tends to be more than enough to run most higher end mobile games, have you multitasking like a pro or producing killer content.

The smartdevice didn’t choke or heat up at any time while I was using it.

An Exynos 2100 crunches your data and is optimised for battery life.

The rear of the smartphone is plastic.

Three cameras are on the back, 12 MP wide, a Dual Pixel 8 MP telephoto) and a 3x optical zoom 12 MP ultrawide).

For those breathtaking selfies you’ve got a very generous 32 MP single lens. The Galaxy S21 FE records video in 4K.

Samsung have placed and retained favourite camera modes to the likes of split screen recording mode called Director Mode.

There’s Portrait for still snaps to get you looking your best, a very crisp night mode that uses wizardry to pull in seemingly non-existent light for your darkened pics and Single Take (we first saw this on the Galaxy S20) which automatically takes a variety of stills and video all in one go. Perfect for those times when you want to capture one of those once in ever moments.

The Galaxy S21 FE has the same battery as the higher end phones. A 4500mAh cell which during my time with the Galaxy S21 FE saw the phone lasting over two days from a full charge on moderate to heavy use.

Playing mobile games, such as Call of Duty, Asphalt or any other resource intensive title will drain the power quicker.

On a fresh full charge the Galaxy S21 FE managed to retain roughly three quarters of its battery life after a two our run on COD.

That’s not bad at all.

You can do a quick top up charge if you’re caught short. About 10 to 15 minutes on wireless charge you should get yourself back to 40 – 50% from a 3% remaining.

This will differ on the wireless charger that you are using though. My test was on a 25W.

Cabled is of course quicker.

The Galaxy S21 FE is an excellent surprise. Samsung did their homework with their customers, asking what users liked about the S21 Series and compounded all of that in to a killer handset that doesn’t come with a flagship price.

If you sat out the last years S21 series and waited to see what the future would bring in this year then the S21 FE is gold and priced right. You’d be getting all of the goodness from the entire S21 range at way less than last years prices.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is a sure upgrade if you’re on an older device or an excellent contender for content creators that want to goods without the hefty price tag.

Go big, be bold with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G.

In a early surprise Samsung released their newest flagship series of Galaxy’s two months prior to their usual launch time of March.

Just before release STG received the S21 which we explored and reviewed here.

But if you’re really wanting to wield the power on a big screen most likely the phablet sized S21 Ultra 5G is for you.

Under the hood the S21 Ultra 5G is packed with 12GB RAM (memory for multitasking and gaming), 256GB storage (pack jam it with your 4K and 8K video recordings) and powered by a Exynos 2100 (5 nm) processor.

This is a 20% faster CPU – and for content creators and mobile gamers the GPU guns it at 35% faster.

In a push towards upping the hardware game even further, there is a 16GB RAM, 512GB ROM version too.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is a large handset is all screen. Almost zero bezel top and bottom with edging the 6.8 inch AMOLED offers two refresh rates of 60 and 120Hz.

The 120Hz is superb for gaming.

Samsung’s newest UI 3 enhances Android 11 making for a smoother and lighter user experience.

Samsung have also given the camera specs a lot of love too.

Your front ‘selfie’ camera comes in at a generous 40MP and is able to record at 4K.

The rear lens housing is packed with cameras and sensors. Main camera is a whopping 108MP wide coupled with the additional lenses – a 10MP periscope, 10MP telephoto and a 10MP steady shot.

And steady shot you’ll need and has been improved upon since the Galaxy S20.

The 100x digital zoom is alot smoother when fully zoomed. My favourite camera mode, Director makes use of the S21 Ultra 5G’s beefed up front camera, recording video in 4K dual (front and back simultaneously).

The camera smarts and tech specs are not where Samsung drew the line.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G has a big battery capacity to match the larger than life smartphone.

Fueled by an impressive 5,000mAh battery is likely to see most users right for a day and a half, heavy users like me, you’ll breeze through a full day, even if doing a bit of media streaming or gameplaying.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G has one more trick in it’s bag of goodies – but it’s not apparent from out of the box.

You can use a S Pen.

When is a Galaxy Note, not a Note? When you couple the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G with the (sold separately) silicone case that comes with the Galaxy S Pen.

Now S Series users and fans can have the same magic that Note users have had for years.

The S Pen will connect instantly via Bluetooth (generally there’s no set up required) and the same S Pen side menu settings will appear when the S Pen is removed from the case.

This is an optional extra and I was privileged to receive one of these with the S21 Ultra 5G. And yep I made use of it – alot.

Samsung have done an incredible task of outperforming not only the last S Series devices but almost all competitors in the market at the time of writing.

Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is the one to have if you are okay with larger screens, it packs more smarts, more mobile photography goodness and will last the distance no matter what you use the smartphone for.

New year, new Samsung flagship.

Aptly named S21 which also reflects the new year, Samsung’s newest Galaxy device is an early riser, releasing in January instead of the usual March launch.

Coming in three models; S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra ensures that there is a device for all users, from the light to super-user range. The S21 is the entry level model – but by no means a watered down experience.

We received the S21 pre-launch and the first thing you are likely to notice from the box is the exquisite tri-camera housing on the rear of the smartphone.

True, almost everyone uses a phone case – and you should to protect your new tech investment, however Samsung have gone a step ahead and housed the camera lenses in to their own raised framing keeping the lenses themselves from being damaged if, say, the phone comes up against something else in your pocket or bag, or simply being slid across a surface.

All of the S21 models are built for maximum speed. It’s foot to the floor with the power of Exynos 2100 processor (Qualcomm SM8350 Snapdragon 888 – USA and China) which is not only built for superior multi-tasking but also optimised for battery consumption.

The S21 has 8GB of RAM and all models are 256GB storage. Samsung have removed the option of expandable storage by way of microSD.

It’s great being a power user, sure, but what really shines for the Galaxy S21 is the camera.

There are three lenses at the back. A 12MP wide, 64MP telephoto and 12MP ultra-wide and records in both 4K and 8K.

The front is going to see you right and then some for those breathtaking selfies with it’s single 10 MP lens.

Samsung could have left it here – but they didn’t, an additional camera mode that is perfect for vloggers, YouTubers and more; Director Mode.

This new recording innovation activates both the rear and front cameras simultaneously, enabling you to record and narrate at the same time with a picture in picture.

On the fly you can zoom in or out at the touch of a tile on the Director Mode and flip the front and rear camera view without the need of pausing your recording session.

Whatsmore Samsung have tidied up Night mode. A pitch black night time shot when using the dedicated mode will use a technical sorcery for a clear, detailed and lit shot.

The S21 has a maximum of 30x digital zoom and there has been work done to steady the camera’s view when at full zoom – but bear in mind the closer to go in, the less detail you’ll get.

The brilliant AMOLED screen comes in at 6.2 inch on the Galaxy S21 @ 1080 x 2400 pixels and offers both 60 and 120Hz refresh rates.

While there is hardly a bezel to speak of the S21 does not have an edge screen.

The UI is cleaner too. Rocking Android 11 the S21’s interface is cleaner and sharper than ever before.

As the S21 only has a 4,000 mAh battery I do recommend keeping the screen on 60Hz unless you are playing a serious mobile game. The higher refresh rate does gobble up the life of the Galaxy S21, in my test with the device the higher refresh rate limited the battery to around 9 hours from full to flat, whereas keeping it on 60Hz gained just over 12 hours of normal use.

Gaming – the Galaxy S21 can do.

Call of Duty Mobile, PUBG and Fortnite played superbly. The downside though is the smaller battery. Call of Duty sucked up a large chunk of juice (around 60%) in as little as 2 hours of play on 120Hz.

So while the Galaxy S21 is most definitely more than capable in being able to keep up with it’s bigger siblings in gaming power, it loses the race for longevity. I imagine however that the more serious players out there would go for the S21 Ultra with the beefier battery and super-size screen.

For the moderate users to the multi-taskers, the S21 is a perfect device offering you currently unbeaten mobile photography chops that no other smart device can compare to at the time of writing.

Samsung Galaxy S21 – little but loud, small yet bold and if larger smart phones is not your thing then it’s the perfect upgrade.
