<p>There are now enough first person shooters that ape the aesthetics, gameplay and level design of mid 1990s shooters that they have been given the somewhat-derisive nickname of “boomer shooters.”</p>
<p>I have looked at a number of these titles, praising them for resurrecting mechanics, design considerations and aesthetics lost in the transition to more cinematic experiences pioneered by titles such as <em>Medal of Honour</em> and <em>Call of Duty</em>.</p>
<p>3D Realms has been at the forefront of this revival, with previous hit <em>Ion Fury</em> (nee <em>Ion Maiden</em>) taking on the <em>Duke Nukem</em>-style heritage. Now, they are back with the first sections of <em>Graven</em>, a spiritual sequel to the legendary <em>Hexen II</em>.</p>
<p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-51193" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_15.jpg?x59030" alt="Graven" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_15.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_15-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_15-1280x720.jpg 1280w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_15-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_15-1536x864.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>The setup to <em>Graven </em>is relatively simple.</p>
<p>You are a priest, outcast from society, and find yourself in a slowly-disappearing town in the dark swamp. With only the vaguest of directions, you are set upon a cursed world where you will use magic, swords and an assortment of other unique weapons to take down the terrors devouring the landscape.</p>
<p>The fantasy setting for <em>Graven</em> is straightforward, though does leave an impression.</p>
<p>In this initial early access release there isn’t much to do in town or to people interact with, except for the slightest of conversation to set you down a path into the first few areas. Instead, what strikes you is the visual style &#8211; a unique mix of PS1-era graphics with modern lighting techniques and gameplay accommodations. Out of all of the boomer shooters I have played, <em>Graven </em>has what I feel is the best mix between the old and the new (though <em>Amid Evil’s </em>ray tracing update certainly is impressive on the right hardware).</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-51192" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_13.jpg?x59030" alt="Graven" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_13.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_13-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_13-1280x720.jpg 1280w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_13-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_13-1536x864.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>At early access launch, the game contains four quests to complete, which took me about 2.5 hours to finish up.</p>
<p>It isn’t a huge amount of content, but does cover a number of large areas and puzzles. It slowly introduces new weapons and mechanics, and by the end I felt I had a decent range of capabilities that gave me a bit of an insight into what to expect in the full game.</p>
<p>In <em>Graven</em> you’ll have to switch it up between melee and ranged combat relatively frequently, and with this comes strategic decisions about which enemies to take out in which order.</p>
<p>I did have a number of issues with the game at launch, but happily since finishing the early access content and writing up this piece, the developers have gone back and addressed nearly all of them, and the team seems to be genuinely looking at playing feedback and impressions when considering further refinements.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-51194" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_2.jpg?x59030" alt="Graven" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_2.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_2-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_2-1280x720.jpg 1280w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_2-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/GR_Screenshot_2-1536x864.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>For example, the Discharge spell has been added back to the game after making an appearance in an earlier public demo of the game on Steam.</p>
<p>As with all these early access games, how the final product evolves is still to be seen. So far, this has been a small but intriguing taste of what the full game may offer.</p>
<p>Wide environments, environmental puzzles and metroidvania style gating of progression all come together to make for a very different type of shooter than most on the market today.</p>
<p>Excellent entries such as this is why boomer shooters have had a marked resurgence, and why I am excited for <em>Graven’s</em> future.</p>

<p><em>GRAVEN</em>, the dark-fantasy action-adventure FPS co-published by 3D Realms and 1C Entertainment with development by Slipgate Ironworks, launches on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2021.</p>
<p>Revealed at Realms Deep 2020, <em>GRAVEN</em> delves into a gruesome medieval world of deities and monstrosities as a disgraced Priest of the Orthogonal Order. When a heretical member of the Order sacrifices the Priest’s adoptive daughter, the Priest lethally retaliates in a bout of righteous fury. Tried and found guilty by his brothers and now exiled to the burning sands, he closes his eyes for one last prayer, for peace. The Creator speaks to him directly: “You will have to earn your peace.”</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-47279" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-09-06-image-6.jpg?x59030" alt="Graven" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-09-06-image-6.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-09-06-image-6-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-09-06-image-6-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-09-06-image-6-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-09-06-image-6-1536x864.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>Heed the Creator by hunting down the foul heretical sects responsible for conjuring plagues and twisting the natural order of the seasons. Blending action, exploration, and puzzle-solving, GRAVEN takes cues from classic shooters, immersive sims, and action RPGs alike. Journey across three expansive, open-ended regions, and scour the lands to purge evil.</p>
<p>Carefully observe a reactive world to find the way: with a journal, the player drives the exploration instead of following waypoints. Listen to townsfolks’ woes and slay the monsters responsible for their torment. Banish over thirty distinct enemies from plagued madmen to swamp beasts with powerful sorceries such as wild blasts of lightning and scorching rays of flame. Solve environmental puzzles with those same powers, altering the world with spells.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-47280" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/graven1.jpg?x59030" alt="Graven" width="1460" height="821" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/graven1.jpg 1460w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/graven1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/graven1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/graven1-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1460px) 100vw, 1460px" /></p>
<p>Wield destructive conventional weaponry, including magic staves and wrist-mounted crossbows. Find hidden gold to upgrade weapons and spells at blacksmiths and alchemists. Return to previously-plundered areas with new abilities to uncover secrets and entirely new areas. With more than 30 weapons and spells, GRAVEN encourages experimentation. Play solo, with one friend in split-screen co-op, or even in a party of four online for complete arcane chaos.</p>
<p>“<em>GRAVEN</em> began as a game we had often dreamed of,” said Frederik Schreiber, vice president of 3D Realms and Game Director on Graven. “‘What would a spiritual successor to a Dark Fantasy series such as Hexen, have looked like if it was made in 1998 in the original Unreal engine?’ We think the answer is GRAVEN. We hope you do too.</p>
<p><em>GRAVEN</em> will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2021.</p>
