My love from Doctor Who has been growing the more I watch the show.

Everyone knows the David Tennant Doctor, and so being a new fan I was confused why he was back for Specials that are releasing now. Is it set back in the original series time? What the hell is going on? Well I wasn’t expecting what I saw.

This series is its own unique little story. It kicks off with David Tennant as the Doctor. The Doctor does the usual thing when they are reborn with sussing out their new appearance. The Doctor is confused when he realises he is in an old face as that hasn’t happened before. This is the part that I understand is contentious with fans, as this isn’t supposed to happen supposedly.

But anyway, if you watched the David Tennant series, you will know that it ended with heartbreak. Donna had to be forced to forget all her adventures with the Doctor so she wouldn’t die from the chaos inserted into her brain. We discover Donna living a life as a fantastic mum and wife, and the Doctor happens upon her by chance. He tries to avoid her recognising him, but she is dealing with a feeling of emptiness, like something is missing.

Anyway, things kick off when aliens land on earth, and Donna and the doctor have to save the world.  The first special brings a cute little alien being hunted, and it takes an insane turn which flips the little story on its head. The best part is getting some more content with the excellent Doctor and companion. I’m not going to spoil it, I will just say I enjoyed the hell out of it as well as the other two specials.

David Tennant does a fantastic job of playing the Doctor. He hasn’t just totally fallen into the old character, instead he plays a Doctor that has been regenerated a few times. In many ways, he is as charming as ever, but he plays it a little more jaded in a way that is unique yet familiar. Catherine Tate as Donna is as charming and fun as ever.

One amazing thing with these DVD releases is the sheer amount of special features on the discs. The Doctor Who: 60th Anniversary Specials DVD is no exception. Each disc has one special and heaps of behind the scenes content. This makes for heaps of extra watching for the fans like me that want that little bit more.

Doctor Who: 60th Anniversary Specials are a cracking little story that leans into the latest Doctor in its own cool way. As a new fan of the show, I don’t have the hang ups on what should or shouldn’t happen in the lore. Instead I just enjoyed it for what was in front of me, and I enjoyed the hell out of it and look forward to watching it over and over again on DVD.

Doctor Who is such an amazing series, but it has been so hard to find.

DVD’s, Blurays and streaming services occasionally have one series at a time at most. Fortunately it seems like they are being re-released on DVD, so you can finally stock up your collection.

So it was time to check out Peter Capaldi’s second season, with Doctor Who: The Complete Ninth Series.

Series eight finished on a shocking twist with the Twelfth Doctor and his companion Clara headed separate ways.  series nine kicks off with Santa having some issues on a rooftop. Clara walks out of a door to see him, realise who he is, and the series kicks off full Doctor Who chaos.

After series eight ended I did wonder if they were going to bring in a new companion for the Ninth doctor  I was glad they didn’t get rid of Clara as I thought they were a great pair. And in Series Nine this only gets better. A lot of the episodes instead of being just one and done, carry on over a couple of episodes which is so great to watch.

It’s not uncommon for Doctor Who to be a bit all over the place tonally, it’s kinda where a lot of the charm comes from. You can have a super dark episode, followed by a strange and wacky one.

In series nine there are some episodes where they jump around too much and it kind of loses some of the momentum. One of the early episodes the Doctor goes to help a boy in a vast desert looking space, surrounded by strange hand mines. It’s creepy as hell, when the Doctor realises who the boy is, someone that causes a very big baddy to exist in the future, he leaves. Then the episode jumps around way too much, instead of just landing that punch of an ethical dilemma.

That’s probably the most critical thing I can say though, is that jumping around too much?

As someone reasonably new to the show, I may just need that little bit more hand holding than some much longer term fans. Having said that, It may be one of my favourite seasons I have seen thus far. Some of the episodes are brilliantly dark and serious, and some silly as expected. Peter Capaldi keeps absolutely slapping in the role, and it’s just damn fine TV.

The DVD itself is loaded with heaps of awesome special features.

The first disc includes a short prequel and a refresher from series eight, which are both dope. Then there are heaps and heaps of behind the scenes shots throughout which is an amazing add on.

One the whole, Doctor Who: Series Nine is a fantastic series and well worth a watch. The DVD collection includes so much awesomeness that makes it well worth adding to your collection.  Thank goodness it is now more readily available to enjoy.

Doctor Who is one of the longest and oldest running nerd series around, and somehow this nerd only got into it recently.

I have slowly been making my way back through the Seasons and I am loving it. So with the chance to check out the mini series Flux on DVD, I jumped at the chance.

Doctor Who is generally a series of individual episodes that contain an isolated story. Season Thirteen is a big change to this in that it’s a six episode mini series. The series tells the story of a universe and time destroying event called the flux which is causing absolute chaos. And the only person capable of saving everything is the Doctor.

The series kicks off with an old villain being released. If you are new to the series, like me, then you won’t have a clue who he is, but you know he is bad. He kicks off the flux and things go bananas. We are also introduced to a Liverpool man called Dan.  Dan is captured by a new character who is a giant dog-like being called Karvanista.  When the Doctor and Yaz follow the strange signals in Dan’s house, the journey to Karvanista’s spaceship winds up with them learning about the flux, and its impending taking over of Earth.

Dan winds up with the Doctor and Yaz in the TARDIS and the Flux hits, sending them all in different directions in time. The story goes absolutely bananas, with a bunch of iconic villains, and some weirdness with time as the worlds history is rewritten. On the whole, it’s a really fun Doctor Who romp.

If you are new to the show, then this isn’t the worst jumping off point. There are heaps of old characters and some information that is really useful to know as a long time watcher. On the flip side, as with every new companion, Dan really helps a new watcher ease through the questions. Is the TARDIS alive? What’s the deal with the Doctor? Space travel? Lots of questions you will have, will be asked by Dan as he goes from living his chill Scouser life to travelling through space. There were plenty of times I was lost and had no idea which characters were new and which were old, but I was in it for the journey.

The DVD collection comes with heaps of special features on each disc which is super awesome, but it doesn’t come with the Season 13 Specials which is unfortunate because they wrap up a few storylines. I really wish it did come with them, as finding places to watch Doctor Who in NZ is hard.

Doctor Who: Flux is a really awesome and fun series that is as good of a starting point as any for someone wanting to check out the show. There are some plot holes, and it’s not always consistently excellent, but it’s dumb and fun. Turn your brain off, and enjoy the 6 hour journey the series has to offer.

Get excited, Whovians, because Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston is coming to New Zealand for two special events in February 2024.

The Ninth Doctor will be joined by a line-up of Who actors, including the 12th Doctor’s companion Pearl Mackie, to meet fans in Auckland on February 24th, 2024 and Wellington February 25th 2024 .

Organiser William Geradts, who runs the Armageddon Expo, says the aptly-named Lord of Time events coincide perfectly with the show’s 60 year milestone. “Doctor Who is one of those cult classic shows that spans generations,” he says. “Being a huge fan myself, I’m very excited to be a part of the celebrations here in New Zealand. Christopher Eccleston is a massive drawcard for Whovians, so I’m sure we’ll have loads of people joining us to mark 60 years.”

He says this will be the first time fans will have the chance to meet a new generation Doctor in New Zealand.
“Peter Capaldi, the Twelfth Doctor, was here in 2015 for an evening speakers event – but this is something completely new because fans will be able to chat with Christopher Eccleston and get an autograph and photo with him.”

Tickets and tokens for the two Lord of Time conventions are on sale via iTicket for Auckland and Ticketmaster for Wellington. Among other Who events in the country will be Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder: Where Science Meets Fiction exhibition in Wellington.

The exhibition will run for five months from June 1 at  Tākina , Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre, giving fans of the hit BBC television series 2024 the opportunity to come face to face with the show’s iconic characters, share the Doctor’s adventures, and explore some of the worlds visited on screen.

It is the first time the exhibition has left UK shores.

One of the most iconic characters in the Whoniverse is returning for the upcoming holiday special of Doctor Who, as John Barrowman MBE puts on his famous coat once more and reprises his role as Captain Jack Harkness.

The cheeky Captain left viewers reeling in the season 12 episode, “Fugitive of the Judoon,” when he made a brief surprise appearance with a stark warning for Yaz, Ryan and Graham to pass on to the Doctor before disappearing.

In the upcoming special titled “Revolution of the Daleks,” Captain Jack will be on hand to help the fam as they discover a disturbing plan forming involving one of the Doctor’s most feared and dangerous enemies, the Daleks. With the Thirteenth Doctor locked away in a space prison, will Captain Jack be able to help save planet Earth?

On returning for the special, Barrowman revealed: “Putting on Jack’s coat and setting foot back on the set of Doctor Who was just like going back home. It’s always thrilling to play Captain Jack. He’s a character very close to my heart who changed my life, and to know the fans love him as much as I do makes his return even sweeter. I hope everyone enjoys Jack’s heroic adventure with Thirteen.”

Chris Chibnall, Executive Producer, said: “A Doctor Who holiday special means treats galore, and there’s no bigger treat than the return of John Barrowman to Doctor Who, for an epic and emotional feature-length episode. If anyone can blast away the sheer rubbishness of 2020, it’s Captain Jack. Daleks beware!”

Matt Strevens, Executive Producer BBC Studios, added: “After a tantalisingly brief appearance in “Fugitive of the Judoon,” it’s a total joy and thrill to welcome back John as Captain Jack. One of the most iconic characters in Doctor Who lore, his presence ignites this holiday special from the start.”

“Revolution of the Daleks” will air this holiday season on BBC AMERICA.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment revealed today at San Diego Comic-Con details about Doctor Who in LEGO Dimensions, the upcoming entertainment experience that allows players to expand their imaginations beyond traditional gaming to merge physical LEGO brick building with interactive console gameplay.

Peter Capaldi, who plays the 12th Doctor, Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald, and Michelle Gomez, who plays Missy, will voice their respective characters from the long running British science fiction television series in LEGO Dimensions.

Doctor Who, which has never before been in a LEGO videogame, will be playable in the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack with a complete Doctor Who Level where the game’s heroes continue their quest while encountering Daleks, Cybermen and other adversaries from the Whoniverse.

Fans who want more Doctor Who in LEGO Dimensions will be able to purchase the Doctor Who Level Pack which includes an additional mission-based Doctor Who Level, along with a LEGO minifigure of the 12th Doctor and LEGO models of the TARDIS and K-9, all playable in the game.

When the 12th Doctor is defeated in the Level, he returns as the 1st Doctor and then regenerates back up to the 12th Doctor again.  The interior of the TARDIS will reflect the corresponding Doctor the player embodies or can be manually selected.  There’s even a jukebox inside where players can choose among different versions of the Doctor Who theme music.  The TARDIS and K-9 models can each be physically built and then rebuilt twice to do entirely different things in the digital game for massive variety.

There will also be a Doctor Who Fun Pack, which includes a playable Cyberman minifigure and Dalek model which can be physically built and then rebuilt twice for a total of three different objects.

Launching September 30th, 2015, LEGO Dimensions will be available for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 and the Wii U.
