Larian Studios has officially lifted the curtain on Divinity, its next major role-playing game and the first new project since Baldur’s Gate 3 took over the industry. Revealed during The Game Awards 2025, the announcement confirms a long-rumoured return to Larian’s own fantasy universe, with the studio promising a game that is even larger, darker, and more ambitious than its award-winning predecessor.

Geoff Keighley didn’t mince words on stage, calling Divinity Larian’s biggest game ever, and early details suggest the studio is aiming higher than it ever has before.

A Dark Reveal at The Game Awards

The first look at Divinity came via a pre-rendered cinematic trailer, and it was far more unsettling than what many fans expected. The trailer opens with a man burned alive inside a Wicker Man-style structure, surrounded by cheering villagers who descend into a disturbing ritual. Masked cultists, flagellants, and a strange celestial event loom over the scene, before everything spirals into chaos.

By the end, the crowd itself is absorbed into a grotesque statue made of fused bodies, echoing the mysterious desert monument that had fuelled speculation in the days leading up to the show. The reveal confirmed that the strange obelisk was neither an Elder Scrolls tease nor a random stunt, but the first breadcrumb for Larian’s next epic.

The tone is notably darker than Baldur’s Gate 3, signalling a grim fantasy world where player choices may push things toward light, or drag them further into horror.

What Is Divinity, And How Does It Fit the Series?

Despite the simple name, Divinity is not a hard reboot. Larian has clarified that the game does not require knowledge of previous entries, but players familiar with Divinity: Original Sin and Original Sin 2 will notice stronger continuity and deeper connections.

Interestingly, this is the first title in the franchise to be called simply Divinity. Past entries ranged from Divine Divinity in 2002 to Divinity: Original Sin 2 in 2017, often jumping around the timeline and rewriting major lore along the way. Larian publishing director Michael Douse has already confirmed there are no plans for Divinity: Original Sin 3, reinforcing that this new game is intended as a fresh foundation for what the studio calls the Divinity universe.

According to Larian founder and CEO Swen Vincke, this project brings everything the studio has learned into one cohesive vision, combining breadth, depth, and intimacy on a scale they’ve never attempted before.

Bigger Than Baldur’s Gate 3, By Design

In multiple interviews following the reveal, Vincke has been clear about the studio’s confidence. He believes Divinity will surpass Baldur’s Gate 3 on all fronts, from systems design to player freedom.

One major advantage is ownership. Unlike Baldur’s Gate 3, which was built on Dungeons and Dragons rules, Divinity is entirely Larian’s own creation. That freedom allows the team to design mechanics specifically for a video game, rather than adapting tabletop systems.

Vincke has described Divinity as Larian unleashed, explaining that every class, system, and narrative choice is being built without external constraints. The goal is to make a game that feels more intuitive, more flexible, and ultimately more reactive to how players choose to play.

Turn-Based Combat Is Confirmed

Following fan speculation, Larian has officially confirmed that Divinity will be a turn-based RPG, staying true to both Baldur’s Gate 3 and the Original Sin games. This confirmation came via interviews conducted after The Game Awards, including comments shared with IGN.

Vincke told IGN that Divinity is a single-player game with cooperative multiplayer, once again allowing friends to experience the story together. He also revealed that the game has already been in development for two years and is now in full production.

Importantly, Larian has not ruled out early access. While nothing is locked in yet, the studio has said it will most likely follow a similar early access approach to Baldur’s Gate 3, depending on how development progresses.

Player Agency At The Core

If there’s one word Larian keeps returning to, it’s agency. According to Vincke and writing director Adam Smith, Divinity is built around giving players control at every level, from character identity to narrative direction.

The team wants players to feel like they are shaping the world, not just reacting to it. Choices will matter, and the consequences are designed to ripple outward in unexpected ways. Vincke has hinted that some systems and story outcomes will surprise even experienced RPG players, with different playthroughs leading to wildly different stories.

This philosophy builds directly on what made Baldur’s Gate 3 so successful, but Larian believes Divinity will push this even further, with deeper reactivity and more extreme outcomes.

Development, Early Access, And What Comes Next

Despite the scale of the project, Divinity still has no release window. Vincke has suggested that an early access launch is planned, but it is unlikely the game will be ready as early as 2026. Larian is also experimenting with a new engine, which has introduced challenges but promises better cinematic storytelling and smoother content streaming.

The studio is aiming to shorten development time compared to Baldur’s Gate 3, which took around six years to complete. Even so, Vincke has been clear that creativity cannot be rushed, and Larian is expanding its writing and scripting teams to develop content in parallel.

For now, fans will need to wait for gameplay footage, but all signs point to Divinity being a massive, long-term project that defines Larian’s future.

A New Era For Larian Studios

With Baldur’s Gate 3 selling more than 20 million copies, Larian is entering this next chapter from a position of strength. The success of that game has given the studio the resources to take bigger risks, experiment more boldly, and double down on what it does best.

Divinity represents a return home for Larian, but also a leap forward. If the studio delivers on its promises, this could be the RPG that sets the tone for the next generation of narrative-driven games.

Immortality.

What price would you pay to stay youthful, free from illness, a prolonged life?

Scientist Sterling Pierce (Scott Bakula) dedicated his entire life to exactly that, eventually being able to bottle immortality in small doses in a serum he called Divinity.

But it was too late for him, however his son Jaxxon Pierce (Stephen Dorff) continues with the research, producing the serum and managing an empire.

That is until two mysterious celestial brothers intervene… too much of a good thing can be a bad thing, and there’s a reason humans do not last forever.

Divinity is a truly creative masterpiece. Filmed in black and white which compliments the utopian flavour and explores both the fragility of life, the complications of human desires and the miracle of our existence.

Directed and written by Eddie Alcazar, Divinity is a twisty, brooding science fiction originality that fuses various genres of film in to one, including stop motion.

It is also a film that makes you think, feel and realise that eventually we all return to nature, become a mere spec within the cosmos once again. As was intended.

Larian Studios is excited to announce that the team behind the Metacritic Must-Play RPG Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is working with Apple and Elverils on an Apple iPad port of the game.

The project was revealed as a key title driving demos in this year’s WWDC event.

In a video for developers about Xcode12 and Metal Apps released during WWDC 2020, Apple showcased the new iPad version of the BAFTA award-winning adventure from Larian Studios. The team is working on adding all-new touch screen controls and UIs as well as adding controller support. Though the port is a long way from release, Larian is excited to iterate together with some of the top minds in Apple and iPad development. Elverils helmed the already released MacOS version of Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Originally released to critical acclaim on PC, Divinity: Original Sin 2 was released for the Nintendo Switch last year, featuring cross save progression with Steam.

What’s shown in the WWDC video in terms of features on the menu are not 100% final, and the full list of features will be announced at a later date.

Join the battle for Divinity in a world that reacts to who you are, and what you do. Adventure as a flesh-eating Elf, or an imperial Lizard. Play as a mighty Dwarf, or lead your party as an Undead, risen from the grave!

Earlier in June, during this year’s Guerrilla Collective Showcase, the studio released the latest Gift Bag for the critically acclaimed RPG. The free DLC “The Four Relics of Rivellon” is the largest Gift Bag for the game so far, adding brand-new quest lines, stories and enemies.

Players will be able to set out on a new adventure, hunting for four armour sets that are scattered all over Rivellon, on quests that feature new voice recording and narration, as well as dastardly new fights, and the Undead Dragon boss. The reward for completing the new quests is four new armour sets imbued with magical properties.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is also available on PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Information about the release date for Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition for iPad will be announced at a later date.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe today announced to us here at STG that DIVINITY: ORIGINAL SIN 2, the award-winning, BAFTA nominated role-playing-game (RPG) from Larian Studios is coming to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in August 2018.

Following the game’s incredible success in 2017 Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. and Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe, in partnership with Larian Studios, will bring DIVINITY: ORIGINAL SIN 2 to console players, taking them on an adventure that will enable players to go anywhere and do anything in one of the deepest RPG worlds ever created.

DIVINITY: ORIGINAL SIN 2 gives players the freedom of a sandbox RPG, encouraging improvisation and experimentation, with rules made to be bent rather than followed. The game takes place in the world of Rivellon where players can go anywhere, talk to anyone (living, dead, or non-human), and fully interact with the game world like no other RPG.

The game features six unique origin characters with full-fledged backstories, personalities, and questlines: Red Prince, a haughty but heroic lizard noble; Sebille, an elven assassin; Lohse, a possessed musician; Ifan ben-Mezd, a mercenary ex-soldier; Beast, a rebel-turned-pirate dwarf; and Fane, an undead member of the long-forgotten Eternal race. Console players diving into the world of DIVINITY: ORIGINAL SIN 2 for the first time will enjoy a user interface tailored for console play in both four-player online co-op and two-player split-screen co-op modes. Additional content updates and extra features will be announced in the weeks and months leading to the game’s launch later this year.

“This is an incredible opportunity for us to work with Larian Studios who has already shown its talented work through the previous games” said Hervé Hoerdt, Vice President of Marketing & Digital at Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe. “We are extremely pleased to bring this outstanding title to our lineup by offering new epic adventures to console gamers with the deepest RPG worlds ever created”

“It was very important to us to have DIVINITY: ORIGINAL SIN 2 distributed by a team that understands how to bring RPGs to a broad audience.” said Swen Vincke, Founder and CEO of Larian Studios. “With Dark Souls and The Witcher, Bandai Namco Entertainment demonstrated they know how to do exactly that and so I’m very happy we’ll have their support.”

Development of DIVINITY: ORIGINAL SIN 2 began with a successful Kickstarter campaign in August 2016, raising over $2 million from more than 40,000 backers. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of DIVINITY: ORIGINAL SIN 2 will be available physically and digitally in in August 2018.

Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition takes you on a journey into the world of Rivellon. The Enhanced Edition, playable on both PS4 and Xbox One, lets you become a Source Hunter with RPG game play and turn based combat.

Divinity offers character creation and customisation for both male and female characters. A few of these specialisations include witches, rogues, knights, rangers, the list goes on.

A key component that makes Divinity stand out from the rest is its ability to play on your own, in online co-op or in local co-op with your friends. Conversations with characters in the game have the ability to alter thanks to you or your friend with turn based conversations. If your friend wants to intimidate someone but you would rather reason, than you can shift the conversation your way or they could vice versa.

The Enhanced Edition is now entirely voiced which would no doubt have added a higher degree of player engagement. It’s difficult to imagine this being achieved before the Enhanced version.

In spite of the hype around co-op game play, the turn based combat, interaction and often complicated controls could become a bit overwhelming and frustrating. The game itself promotes the positives of co-op game play and the ease from full screen to split screen when you and your partner walk far enough away from one another.

For someone who rarely plays turn based games, it felt as though the game expected me to have played similar games or the original Divinity before I had tried out the this one. You get there eventually and things start to become familiar but it just added a weight you don’t really want to have when trying to enjoy a video game.

Optional actions such as attacking, throwing or moving an object were good as they allowed time to think before you act. Saying this, they were also rather tedious.

These options often popped up constantly in the interactive game world. When you’re in the moment and want to quickly bash your way through a pile of wooden barrels blocking your path you can’t. You have to select the barrel, go into the drop down menu and select attack. Most of the time you have to do this for each individual barrel or object and it can become very much time consuming for something that should just take a few seconds.

The story and narrative of Divinity Original Sin takes a bit to kick off but once it does you find yourself engrossed in the world, its characters and what’s going on around you.

This in particular happens when you reach the first town Cyseal and meet such characters as Aureus in order to investigate Jake’s murder. Interestingly enough, Divinity’s quest line doesn’t tell you much, instead opting for the odd log entry or codex which compiles of your characters thoughts or mental notes. You have to logically think about evidence and who you’ve met, what they could know or what they mentioned about something previously.

The town of Cyseal provides slick indoor/outdoor transitions as do other areas in the game. The visual graphics certainly stand out as one the highlights whether that be based off the location itself or the scenery found when exploring. The overall aesthetic of the game and world holds its own ground, complimented by an even weighting of sounds such as dialogue, music and foley sounds.

In spite of a slow start and at times frustrating game play technicalities, Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition is a game you could easily immerse yourself in.

Released to overwhelming critical acclaim, reaching close to a million copies sold on PC and winning over 150 game of the year awards and nominations, Larian Studios’ RPG Divinity Original Sin comes to consoles with a host of new and enhanced content in Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition.

The “Best RPG in years” receives a full makeover, including – but not limited to – a new intuitive user-interface tailored for controllers and couch friendly dynamic split-screen, with full voiced and remastered AAA dialogues featuring Alix Wilton Regan and Alec Newman, as well as hours of new content; quests, combat-styles, locations, changes to the crafting system and a reworked storyline breathing new life into the already expansive world of Rivellon.

Of their partnership, Larian CEO Swen Vincke said “There was a lot of publisher interest for [the console version] but when Focus approached us, the decision was rapidly made. We know each other well, having worked together since 2002, and that means there’s a lot of mutual trust & respect.

Focus’ recent growth as well as the energy and enthusiasm showcased by their team makes me confident they’ll do a great job in publishing the Xbox One & PS4 versions of Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition.”

His remarks were followed closely by Focus Home Interactive’s Managing Partner Cedric Lagarrigue, stating “We’re very proud to accompany Larian on such a big project. We’re pleased to see that both Focus and Larian have remarkably grown since our first partnership more than 10 years ago, and that now together we’ll deliver one of the most exciting RPGs that will release on consoles at the end of 2015.”
