Psych is an absurdly excellent comedy, and I was delighted to see it popping up on Netflix.
With that in mind I was keen to see if there was anything extra slotted into the Psych – The Ultimate Collection, and I am stoked to say there is so much!
If somehow you haven’t heard of this amazing show, Psych follows the story of Shawn and Gus who start up a private detective agency under the veil of being psychic detectives. This is because Shawn has an eidetic memory so remembers everything he sees. Since he is also excellent at spotting details and problem solving, this leads him to being able to “psychically” solve crimes.
Gus is Shawn’s long term friend who has a stable job. After Shawn helps solve a kidnapping he decides to enlist Gus in the new agency, Gus reluctantly agrees and the Psych agency kicks off. The series follows different crimes, and the Psych agency gets heaps of work as they work along side some specific detectives.
But you aren’t here for a procedural police drama, well you could be but it would be the wrong fit. You are here for some excellent comedy. We are gifted this with Shawn being quick witted, incredibly fearless, and a touch goofy. Underlying this is a good heart and some incredible intelligence. Gus is super smart as well, but a bit of a chicken, so paired together there is a whole lot of really well written and acted humour. The cops tend to be the straight laced characters for Shawn and Gus to bounce off, and watching one skeptical detective Carlton who we get to enjoy being embarrassed by Shawns success.
So yea, it’s a fantastic show, but why own it on DVD?
Well to bale to watch it any time of course. But this collection is even better, initially with all the behind the scenes, outtakes, and other special features.
What really takes the cake are the 3 movies included. If you are like me, that sentence may have surprised you. I had no idea that there were Psych movies. Each of these are a straight to TV 90ish minute movie which is basically an extended episode of Psych. Having watched all 3 now for the first time, they are incredibly done, fit into the vibes of the show, with some added flair in the movie itself.
Psych – The Ultimate Collection DVD is an absolutely incredible release. You get the full 6 seasons of the show, which alone is well worth it. Then with the 3 movies added on top, this is a fantastic way to watch this incredibly rewatchable show!
