Amazon Games Montreal is stepping into the MOBA arena with March of Giants, a brand-new free-to-play title that puts a unique spin on the genre. With its steampunk wartime setting, 4v4 battles and the ability to command entire armies, the game is shaping up to be one of the most interesting MOBA releases in years. The closed alpha kicks off in September 2025, and here’s everything you need to know.
What is March of Giants?
March of Giants is the first game developed by Amazon Games Montreal, a studio led by Xavier Marquis, who previously worked as Creative Director on Rainbow Six Siege. The team is stacked with former Ubisoft developers, and they’re aiming to shake up the MOBA space with something fresh.
Instead of the standard 5v5 format you’d find in games like League of Legends or Dota 2, March of Giants keeps things tighter with 4v4 matches. Each player controls a “Giant”, a super-soldier with unique abilities and a class role, ranging from crowd control to heavy damage specialists. Fifteen Giants will be available in the alpha, with ten unlocked from the start and five more to earn through progression.

For example, Goliath is a Ranged Support Giant who can mark enemies with his ‘Battle Mark’ shot or use ‘Comrade’s Call’ to peel attackers off his allies.
How Does It Play?
This isn’t your traditional three-lane MOBA. Each Giant not only fights but also commands an army of soldiers that protect structures and push objectives. Players can build “Battleworks”, tactical constructions like trenches, tanks and bunkers, which change the flow of combat and reshape the battlefield in real time.

The map is designed to feel like a gritty urban warzone inspired by the early 1900s, mixing industrial technology with steampunk fantasy. Matches are won by pushing into the enemy’s territory, destroying their Battleworks and claiming total control of the field.
March of Giants Closed Alpha Dates
The closed alpha runs from September 2 to September 10, 2025. Players from the United States, Canada, and Mexico can apply through the game’s Steam page. The test is PC-only, English-only, and will feature limited PvP queue hours, but players can still experiment with the different Giants in practice mode when queues are down.
If you’re in one of the supported regions, you’ll need to request access on Steam. Those who get in will be notified by email.
Could March of Giants Become an Esport?
The MOBA genre naturally lends itself to competitive play, and March of Giants has plenty of mechanics that could make it a strong esports contender. The 4v4 format, combined with its tactical Battleworks system, means there’s room for diverse strategies and team compositions.
Of course, whether it succeeds will depend on its reception in testing. The past few years have been tough on new competitive titles, with games like Concord, XDefiant and Spectre Divide struggling to hold players. Even Bungie’s upcoming Marathon has faced pushback before release. But where those games stumbled with pricing models and lack of innovation, March of Giants has the advantage of being free-to-play and offering genuinely fresh mechanics.
With League of Legends and Dota 2 still dominating the scene, it’s a big challenge to break through. But if Amazon Games can deliver on its promise, March of Giants might carve out a place for itself alongside the giants of the MOBA world.
