After years of waiting, hoping, and memeing ourselves into madness, Hollow Knight: Silksong finally has a proper release date. Team Cherry has officially confirmed that the long-anticipated sequel will launch on 4 September 2025 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and even Microsoft’s upcoming portable consoles, the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X.

This news comes straight from Team Cherry’s YouTube channel and a special livestream announcement. For fans who have endured over half a decade of “Silksanity” and countless community memes, it’s hard to believe the wait is nearly over.

From DLC to Full Game

What makes Silksong’s journey so wild is that it didn’t even start out as its own game. Originally, Team Cherry planned it as a Hollow Knight DLC focused on Hornet, one of the original game’s most mysterious and agile characters. But the scope quickly ballooned. The tiny Australian studio of just three developers decided to expand it into a fully fledged sequel, mirroring the rocky but passionate development history of the first Hollow Knight, which also began as a small game jam project before evolving into a Kickstarter hit.

That decision meant delays, long silences, and a community that slowly turned their anticipation into a strange cultural phenomenon filled with memes, conspiracy theories, and even “ritual sacrifices” (thankfully just online jokes).

What to Expect in Silksong

From the looks of the trailers and the Gamescom demo, Silksong is shaping up to be massive. Here’s what’s confirmed so far:

  • Over 200 new enemy types to encounter across a vast, haunted kingdom.
  • 40+ bosses — some of which already look epic, including one battle set in a field of white roses.
  • A brand-new setting drenched in atmosphere and secrets, promising to match (if not exceed) the original’s labyrinthine map.
  • Hornet’s acrobatic combat style, which makes her feel very different from the slower, methodical Knight of the first game.

Between exploration, combat, and hidden lore, Silksong looks set to carry the Metroidvania torch even higher.

Worth the Wait?

Previews from Gamescom suggest that the game is living up to the hype. The demo already impressed critics with its fluid movement, rich environments, and enemy variety. Considering it’s been eight years since the original Hollow Knight first bewitched players with its bleak, bug-filled kingdom, the sequel has some very large shoes to fill.

Whether it meets the sky-high expectations remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Silksong is real, it’s finished, and it’s nearly here.
