Fortnite’s next big addition might be the most chaotic one yet, and it’s not a new weapon, crossover, or alien tentacle. According to some of the game’s most trusted leakers, Proximity Chat could finally be coming to Fortnite Battle Royale.

Yup, that means you might soon be able to actually hear that enemy player shouting at you from around the corner.
What’s Going On?
Multiple well-known Fortnite insiders, including Wensoing and Loolo_WRLD, have uncovered some interesting bits in the game files after the latest update. It looks like Epic Games has moved some of the Proximity Chat files from Creative Mode into Battle Royale, which usually means something’s cooking behind the scenes.
It looks like Proximity Chat is being added to Battle Royale soon 🤔
Epic has seperated some Creative Proximity Chat files so they could be included in BR. It will have a setting to disable and enable it.

While Epic hasn’t confirmed anything yet (classic), the fact that these files are even popping up in BR files is a pretty good sign that the feature might be coming soon. That said, it’s important to remember that this is still just a leak, and not everything that gets tested ends up in the game.
What Even Is Proximity Chat?
If you’ve played games like Warzone, Rust, or even Among Us mods, you’ll know what this is about. Proximity chat lets you hear players based on how close they are to you in the game. It’s often hilarious, sometimes helpful, and occasionally downright toxic.
That last bit is the catch. While being able to hear your teammates or troll your enemies in real time sounds like a blast, it can also get messy fast, especially in a game as big (and young) as Fortnite.

Will It Be Optional?
Yes! according to the leaks, the feature will come with a setting to toggle it on or off. So if hearing strangers scream, sing, or scream-sing their way through Battle Royale isn’t your thing, you’ll be able to switch it off in the settings.
There’s even mention of it being tied into Push-To-Talk, so you can keep things muted unless you really need to drop that clutch callout.
When Could It Drop?
Well… no one knows yet. Just because the files are in the game doesn’t mean it’s arriving tomorrow. Epic often tests features long before they actually get released, or sometimes they don’t get released at all.
But considering how long fans have been asking for proximity chat, and how polished Fortnite’s voice system already is ,there’s a fair chance we’ll see it roll out eventually. Maybe as a limited test? Maybe in full? Time (and Epic) will tell.
Final Thoughts
If the leaks are true, this could mark a major shift in how Fortnite feels to play. Communication would get a big upgrade, but so would the chaos. Imagine rolling up on another squad and hearing their panic before they even spot you. Or worse… hearing them meme you as you crawl for your life.
Proximity chat could add a whole new layer of strategy, and nonsense, to Fortnite. But again, let’s not get too ahead of ourselves. For now, it’s just a leak.

Still, it wouldn’t hurt to start prepping your best in-game one-liners… just in case.
