The announcement came through the official Minecraft X (formerly Twitter) account, teasing fans with a short post: “Building terrain. See you in theatres July 23 2027.” That simple message was enough to send social media into overdrive, and movie theatre employees straight into panic mode, remembering the chaos of the first film’s screenings.
A Box Office Giant Gets Its Sequel
The original Minecraft movie, released in April 2025, became an unexpected box office juggernaut. Starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks, the live-action adaptation followed a group of misfits pulled into the blocky Overworld, guided by master crafter Steve, played by Black.
The film exploded beyond expectations, earning $162 million domestically and $312 million globally in its opening weekend. By the end of its run, it had raked in an incredible $957 million worldwide, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 2025, just behind Lilo & Stitch.
Warner Bros. confirmed that Jared Hess, who directed the first film, will return for A Minecraft Movie 2, co-writing the screenplay once again with Chris Galletta. Producers Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa are also back on board.
The studio teased that plot and cast details remain “deep in the mine for now,” but given how wildly successful the first movie was, fans are already bracing for another block-busting adventure.
The Return of the “Chicken Jockey” Mayhem
For anyone who witnessed the first Minecraft movie in theatres, the words “Chicken Jockey” probably bring back some… chaotic memories.
A viral scene featuring Jack Black shouting “Chicken Jockey!” , while a mini zombie rides a chicken, became an instant online meme. It led to the bizarre “Chicken Jockey” trend, where fans attending screenings would erupt into cheers, throw popcorn, and even bring live chickens to theatres.
Things got so out of hand that cinemas worldwide had to step up security or require adult supervision for younger audiences. Some venues even had police respond to crowd disturbances.
So when the sequel was announced, fans immediately joked about what kind of madness A Minecraft Movie 2 will spark next.

A Big Day for Moviegoers
Interestingly, A Minecraft Movie 2 will share its release date with another major sequel, The Simpsons Movie 2. That’s two fan-favourite worlds colliding on the same day, promising one of the most anticipated weekends in 2027 cinema.
With the first film’s legacy still fresh and the fanbase stronger than ever, A Minecraft Movie 2 already looks poised to be another blockbuster hit. Whether fans show up for the story, the memes, or just to scream “Chicken Jockey!” again, it’s clear that the pixel-perfect pandemonium is far from over.
