Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition Now Bundled Into Meta Horizon+ Subscription
Meta Horizon+ subscribers now get a free slice of Xbox’s game library bundled straight into their VR subscription. As of July 21, Microsoft and Meta confirmed that eligible Meta Horizon+ members automatically receive the “Starter Edition” of Xbox Game Pass at no extra cost, opening the door to more than 50 games and 10 hours of cloud gaming every month, playable on Meta Quest headsets, PC or Xbox console.
The rollout was announced jointly by Xbox Wire and Meta’s own blog, marking the second time in 2026 that Microsoft has folded a scaled-down Game Pass tier into a rival platform’s subscription rather than selling it as a standalone product.
What the Starter Edition Actually Includes
Starting from launch day, eligible Meta Horizon+ subscribers get a starter edition of Xbox Game Pass where available, offering access to 50+ games, 10 hours of cloud gaming each month, and Rewards for playing. The catalogue leans on established live-service and co-op titles rather than the newest blockbusters.
The starter edition Game Pass library spans AAA hits to indie favorites, including Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 from Bethesda Softworks, Ghost Town Games’ Overcooked 2, Obsidian Entertainment’s survival game Grounded, Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ, the co-op shooter Deep Rock Galactic, and the truck simulator SnowRunner. Beyond those cloud sessions, subscribers can also permanently download any title in the library onto a PC or Xbox console with no time limit attached, according to Meta’s blog.
Progress carries across devices too. Player progress goes with the subscriber whether they’re playing on Xbox console, PC, Meta Quest headset, or other supported devices. Meta also confirmed that streamed sessions inside a headset can be resized, with four different display sizes available, including a theater-size screen of up to 26 feet.
A Second Cross-Subscription Deal After Discord Nitro
This isn’t Microsoft’s first experiment bundling a slimmed-down Game Pass into someone else’s subscription. Back in May, Xbox announced it was creating a “Starter Edition” of Game Pass specific to Discord Nitro members as part of their subscription, and that same tier has now extended to Meta Horizon+. Industry outlet Pure Xbox reported that the Meta version mirrors the Discord offering feature-for-feature rather than being a distinct, separately curated package.
Trade coverage framed the move as Microsoft testing whether Game Pass performs better as an add-on riding inside other platforms’ billing rather than a service people seek out and pay for directly. Reuters, cited by South Dakota radio outlet KELO, reported that Meta Platforms said it is adding the Xbox Game Pass starter edition to its Meta Horizon+ subscription service, expanding its gaming offering on Quest virtual reality headsets, with the move deepening Meta’s partnership with Microsoft’s Xbox.
Meta Horizon+ Pricing and Existing VR Catalogue
The bundle rides on top of Meta’s existing subscription price rather than requiring an upgrade. A Meta Horizon+ subscription is available for $59.99 USD per year, or $7.99 USD per month. That figure has not changed with the addition of Xbox titles, meaning existing subscribers gain the extra library automatically.
Meta Horizon+ was already positioned as a Quest-focused equivalent to Game Pass for virtual reality software. It’s a membership for Meta Quest VR headsets, allowing access to 100+ VR games instantly for a monthly or yearly fee, according to Pure Xbox, meaning Quest owners who subscribe now effectively get two overlapping game libraries — VR titles plus the Xbox Starter Edition catalogue — under one payment.
Controller-Free Play Is Coming Next
A companion feature is set to remove one of the biggest friction points for playing traditional console games inside a headset: needing a physical gamepad. Rolling out in the coming weeks, a gamepad emulator will map Meta Quest Touch controllers to function like an Xbox controller, so players can jump into Game Pass games right away, according to Meta. Anyone who already owns a physical Xbox controller can still pair it to the headset as before.
For subscribers who outgrow the Starter Edition’s 10-hour monthly cloud allowance, Xbox’s full Game Pass Ultimate tier remains purchasable separately through the Xbox app on the Meta store, giving access to a far larger catalogue via cloud streaming, as GameSpot noted in its coverage of the launch.
The Xbox-Meta relationship stretches back further than this single perk. GameSpot pointed out that the companies previously collaborated on hardware, releasing a co-branded Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition that featured a carbon black color scheme, matching Touch Plus controllers, an Xbox controller, an Elite Strap, and a three-month subscription to Xbox Game Pass. The Starter Edition tie-in extends that hardware-and-software crossover into an ongoing subscription benefit rather than a one-off bundle.
