Halo: Campaign Evolved’s 42 Skulls: All Locations, LASO Unlock Explained

Halo: Campaign Evolved hides 42 collectible Skulls across its 13-mission campaign, with 39 of them tucked into the maps themselves and three more unlocked automatically once players start hunting. According to Halo Studios’ own breakdown on the official Halo Waypoint site, the remake spreads three Skulls per mission across the ten original Halo: Combat Evolved levels plus the three new missions that make up Operation: METEORITE.
Halo Waypoint confirms the scope directly: “In Halo: Campaign Evolved, there are 39 collectible Skulls to be discovered across 13 missions, with three Skulls hidden in each of the ten original campaign missions, and nine more to find throughout new missions set before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved.” Push Square’s own location guide corroborates the same split, noting there are 3 Skulls in each of the game’s 13 Missions, with the remaining trio granted for free once a specific menu option unlocks.
16 Brand-New Skulls Join 26 Legacy Effects
Unlike the 2001 original, which shipped with no Skulls at all, Campaign Evolved leans hard into the collectible system introduced with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in 2011. ScreenRant’s tally puts the total at 26 Legacy Skulls inspired by original collectible Skulls from the OG game, and 16 brand-new Skulls designed for Campaign Evolved specifically, for the full 42-Skull count.
Halo Waypoint describes the new additions as built “for pain, pleasure, and piquancy,” singling out effects like “third-person combat with the Perspective Skull,” the shot-count gimmick of Give and Take, and the platforming-hazard Floor Is Lava Skull. A separate set of four “Classical Flair” Skulls leans the other way, toughening the experience with sprint-disabling Speed Limit, aim-down-sights removal via Hip Fire, an enlarged Assault Rifle magazine called Magnified, and Endurance Spec, which turns UNSC vehicles into effectively indestructible battering rams.
How to Actually Spot a Hidden Skull
Skulls aren’t marked on the map, so players are meant to hunt by ear as much as by sight. Push Square’s guide explains that when you’re near one, you’ll start to hear a sort of whispering/hissing sound that becomes louder the closer you get to the Skull, calling it the only real clue to a Skull’s presence before stumbling onto it directly.
Several outlets also flag one Skull as a near-mandatory early pickup for completionists. ScreenRant highlights Acrophobia, which lets you fly around the map and makes collecting skulls in hard-to-reach locations much easier, effectively turning it into a mobility tool for grabbing the rest of the set. GameSpot’s mission-by-mission walkthrough backs this up with concrete examples, describing one Skull reachable only by climbing the side of a mid-arena structure after clearing out a pair of Hunters.
Campaign Remix, LASO and the Achievement Chase
Finding any three Skulls unlocks Campaign Remix, a mode that randomises gameplay features on repeat runs, and Halo Waypoint states players can seek Skulls wherever they hide to instantly unlock their mission modifiers before folding them into that mode for later playthroughs. Vandal’s guide adds that once a Skull is picked up it counts immediately, so a mission doesn’t need to be finished for the collectible to register.
The full set also gates one of Halo’s signature challenge modes. ScreenRant notes that to unlock the LASO difficulty (Legendary All Skulls On), you’ll need to find each of the Skulls indicated above, while a separate guide from Nux Game Guides pins the number of challenge-specific Skulls needed for that unlock at 17. Rounding out the collectible chase, ScreenRant reports that tracking down all 39 hidden Skulls nets the Headhunter trophy, and pairing that with every hidden Terminal unlocks the Collector’s Addition achievement.
Launch Timing Puts NZ and AU Players a Day Ahead of the US
Halo: Campaign Evolved, Halo Studios’ ground-up Unreal Engine 5 remake of the 2001 original, launched globally on July 28, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam, PlayStation 5 and Game Pass, following five days of early access for Premium and Collector’s Edition owners starting July 23, as confirmed on Xbox Wire. Because of time-zone rollover, the global launch clock lands a day later across parts of the Asia-Pacific region, mirroring the July 29 date already reported for Japan, meaning New Zealand and Australian players hunting Skulls on day one should double-check local storefront timing rather than assuming a straight July 28 unlock.
