Warframe’s Tau Expansion Sends Tenno Beyond the Origin System This Year
Digital Extremes used its TennoCon 2026 stage to confirm that Warframe’s next major narrative chapter, Tau, will push the free-to-play shooter beyond its long-running Origin System for the first time in the game’s history. TennoCon 2026 delivered another big Warframe reveal by Digital Extremes, headlined by a brand-new Narrative Chapter that pushes the game beyond the Origin System for the first time, a new Chimera Warframe voiced by Matthew Mercer, and a full slate of cosmetic, seasonal, and endgame content confirmed for the rest of 2026. The chapter is scheduled to launch free on all platforms later this year.
Speaking to press around the reveal, Warframe creative director Rebecca Ford framed the update as the studio’s most ambitious step yet, telling IGN “Tau is certainly the biggest shift for Warframe ever” as Digital Extremes adds a full second solar system to the thirteen-year-old game. Community director Megan Everett echoed that scale in comments to PCGamesN, calling it “one of the biggest updates we’ve ever done.”
Fornax, The Hunra and the Drug Called Bloom
The initial Tau release centres on Fornax, described by Digital Extremes as a decaying Sentient ring city battered by corrosive black rain. The chapter launches free on all platforms later this year, with the initial release centered on Fornax, a Sentient ring city, and at least one additional unrevealed location, depicted as a decaying, rain-soaked criminal metropolis where black rain corrodes both the environment and its inhabitants’ minds.
Ruling over that underworld is a new antagonist, The Hunra, voiced by Jonathan Bullock. The Hunra is a ruthless crime boss who rules the city through the production of an addicting substance, Bloom, and his deadly network of smugglers and enforcers. Waiting on the other side of that criminal ecosystem is series regular Albrecht Entrati, who has spent the years since The Old Peace quest preparing for the Tenno’s arrival in the new system.
Everett stressed the tonal shift is deliberate, telling PCGamesN there is “no world where what has transpired equals a happy Tau, sunshine and rainbows type of situation.” Digital Extremes is also adding a new mini-game tied to the setting: the Tau update will also introduce an entire Sentient card game, Portau, to Warframe.
Brysko: A Chimera Frame Voiced by Matthew Mercer
Fronting the story is Brysko, a new type of playable character Digital Extremes calls a “Chimera Frame” rather than a standard Warframe or Protoframe. The Tau chapter introduces Brysko, a Chimera Warframe rather than a standard Warframe or Protoframe: he was specifically engineered by Entrati to serve as a trusted infiltration unit inside The Hunra’s criminal circle ahead of the Tenno’s arrival.
Brysko is voiced by veteran actor Matthew Mercer, marking his first role in the franchise. Brysko is silent to the outside world but has a full inner monologue voiced by Matthew Mercer, famed for his work in The Legend of Vox Machina and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, among many others, marking the actor’s first work in the Warframe universe. In the demo shown at the event, Brysko poses as a low-level enforcer running errands for The Hunra while secretly feeding intelligence back to Entrati, risking violent retaliation if his double-dealing is discovered.
Combat details remain limited for now. Brysko uses playing cards in the style of Ragin’ Cajun Gambit, and a revolver-esque gun in action, but that’s everything for now. Digital Extremes also confirmed players will need to complete the full base campaign before setting off for the new system, with no early shortcut. You’ll need to make your way through the entire Warframe campaign to get there; unlike the Duviri Paradox, there’s no option to jump in early.
“You’ve Gotta Earn It,” Says Creative Director Ford
Ford was candid that Tau is being built for committed players rather than newcomers looking for an instant unlock. According to Aftermath, she said of the new system, “You’ve gotta earn it. It’s not gonna be an instant unlock. You need to get through the means of story to access Tau.”
Everett was equally clear that the studio isn’t rebranding the game around the new system. “This is a separate Star Chart, all-new planets. I wouldn’t necessarily call it ‘Warframe 2’ or anything, but it definitely is its own thing.” Ford also reflected on the game’s journey nearly fourteen years after launch, telling Shacknews, “When we launched Warframe nearly 14 years ago, we never dreamed of what it truly could become.”
Iceblade of Narin Leads the Fall Slate, Devstream Set for Seoul
Before Tau arrives, Digital Extremes confirmed a named Fall 2026 update called Iceblade of Narin, which will land ahead of the big expansion. Iceblade of Narin will introduce a new, second female ice-themed Warframe, ending Frost’s long solo reign over the ice theme, alongside Citrine Prime, a Qorvex Deluxe skin, a Banshee Deluxe skin, and a full Banshee ability rework confirmed after fan requests at Anime Expo. The studio said the update targets players roughly at the post-Angels of the Zariman progression point, making it a mid-to-late-game release.
Full specifics on that Fall content will follow a dedicated broadcast. Full details are planned to be shared in a devstream that will air on September 4 in Seoul, South Korea, the studio’s first-ever event in the country.
Nightwave Shockwave, Mesa Heirlooms and an Excalibur Cameo
Between now and Tau’s launch, Digital Extremes is filling out the calendar with smaller drops. A Mesa Heirloom Collection cosmetic set is already live, while August brings a Nightwave remix called Amir’s Shockwave tied to the Warframe: 1999 storyline. Starting in August, Nightwave is getting a themed takeover hosted by Protoframe Amir, tied to the Warframe: 1999 storyline and the long-teased “Fables and Frontiers” concept, expanding the in-game K.I.M. messaging system with a new permanent group chat feature and a walkable mini-adventure that will remain in the game permanently, with rewards including the long-awaited third song from in-game boy band Onlyne, titled “Running Late.”
Digital Extremes also flagged a lighter crossover note during the show: Excalibur, the game’s most iconic Warframe, is now in Fortnite. For Australian and New Zealand Tenno, the news lands alongside confirmation that the game’s existing cross-save and crossplay support carries across all platforms, meaning progress built on console or PC ahead of Tau’s launch won’t need to be repeated when the new system goes live.
