Warframe: How to Unlock Steel Path, the Game’s Toughest Star Chart Mode

Warframe’s toughest permanent challenge, The Steel Path, no longer demands the marathon of side quests it once did. Digital Extremes confirmed in its official patch notes for Hotfix 38.5.3 that Steel Path and Arbitrations now only require players to have completed the Star Chart up until The New War to unlock these mission types. The change strips out several late-game story requirements that had made the mode increasingly daunting for newer Tenno to reach.
What Hotfix 38.5.3 Actually Removed
Before the fix, players needed to clear content from three separate expansions just to speak to Teshin about Steel Path. Digital Extremes’ patch notes spell out the change directly: Steel Path and Arbitrations now only require players to have completed the Star Chart up until The New War to unlock these mission types, and as a result, the studio removed the requirement to complete Zariman Ten Zero missions, Albrecht’s Laboratories missions, and Höllvania missions.
Independent outlet Sportskeeda framed the fix as overdue given how the checklist had grown, noting that starting with 2023, every other mainline update had added new planets or node clusters, making the checklist longer and longer, before hotfix 38.5.3 finally excluded Zariman, Albrecht Lab, and Hollvania from Arbitration and Steel Path requirements.
The Star Chart Checklist You Still Need To Clear
Despite the trim, there’s still real legwork involved. According to the community-maintained Warframe Wiki, hosted separately from the game’s official database but cross-referenced against Digital Extremes’ own patch history, players must have completed all nodes accessible prior to The New War on the connected Star Chart, excluding Mutalist Alad V and Jordas Golem Assassinations on Eris, and Brutus on Uranus.
That means every regular mission node from Earth through Neptune, plus Dark Sector and Archwing missions, still has to be cleared at least once on normal difficulty. Outlet TheGamer’s guide breaks this down similarly, explaining that to unlock the Steel Path, players must complete every node on the Star Chart, including Dark Sectors, Archwing nodes, and the Zariman Ten-Zero under the older rules — a requirement now loosened by the 38.5.3 hotfix for the Zariman specifically.
Talking To Teshin And Flipping The Switch
Once the checklist is done, unlocking the mode is simple. The Warframe Wiki notes that once the player meets these requirements, Teshin will invite the player to challenge The Steel Path, and they must meet him on any Relay and ask him about “Steel Path?” to unlock the mode, after which it will be displayed as a toggle on the right side of the Star Chart screen.
Flipping that toggle doesn’t carry over your existing planet progress. TheGamer’s guide points out that Steel Path has its own Star Chart progression, and when you toggle it on for the first time, your only accessible nodes will be on Earth, forcing a fresh climb through each planet’s Junction to reach the next.
Why Enemies Hit So Much Harder
Steel Path isn’t a cosmetic difficulty label. Per the Warframe Wiki, the mode was a difficulty modifier for the Origin System hosted by Teshin, testing the Tenno’s perseverance against significantly more durable enemies, introduced in Update 28.1 on July 8, 2020. Enemy scaling remains brutal, with the wiki confirming that in the Duviri Undercroft specifically, enemies have the default Steel Path modifiers of +100 enemy level, 250% Health, Shield and Armor.
The threat isn’t limited to tougher trash mobs, either. TheGamer notes that Stalker-linked mini-bosses called Acolytes are variants of the Shadow Stalker that use certain Warframe abilities and weapons, and spawn every five minutes in Steel Path missions.
Steel Essence, Weapon Arcanes And The Umbra Forma Payoff
The grind is offset by a currency exclusive to the mode. TheGamer explains that defeating an Acolyte drops a Weapon Arcane and two Steel Essence, a currency type exclusive to this difficulty mode, and that some of those Arcanes are worth chasing on their own, since Acolytes that spawn in the Steel Path drop Weapon Arcanes that grant up to +360% base damage for your weapons.
Clearing a full planet also pays out in bulk. The Warframe Wiki’s Steel Essence page confirms that 25 Steel Essence are awarded upon fully clearing all of a planet’s mission nodes, with a total of 475 guaranteed for completing the entire Star Chart. That currency feeds directly into Teshin’s rotating shop, where the marquee item remains Umbra Forma, listed on the Wiki as purchased from The Steel Path Honors Shop for 150 Steel Essence when available once every 8 weeks.
For players jumping in fresh, TheGamer’s guide suggests treating Arbitrations as a stepping stone first, since players unlock Arbitrations and Steel Path simultaneously, and farming Arbitrations first for Galvanized Mods gives weapons enough firepower to tackle Steel Path content. For Kiwi and Australian Tenno returning to the free-to-play looter shooter after a break, the eased Hotfix 38.5.3 requirements mean the endgame’s biggest reward loop — and its coveted Umbra Forma — is now a noticeably shorter climb than it was even a year ago.
