OpenAI’s First Hardware: A Screenless, Movable ChatGPT Speaker Companion
OpenAI’s first piece of consumer hardware is reportedly a portable, screen-free smart speaker designed to act as an AI companion living in the home, according to a Bloomberg report. OpenAI’s much-anticipated push into consumer devices is slated to begin with a mobile, screen-free smart speaker designed to be a new type of home computer for the AI era, meant to serve as a humanlike AI companion that lives in the home. The device is still under active development and has not been officially confirmed by OpenAI.
Screenless Speaker Taps ChatGPT Voice Mode, Handles Smart-Home Tasks
According to Bloomberg’s reporting, cited independently by TechCrunch, the device will help control smart-home appliances, play media, answer questions, respond to messages and tap into the range of capabilities offered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Rather than a traditional command-and-response gadget, the pitch is for something closer to a persistent digital housemate.
One of the stranger design details to emerge is that the device involves mechanical elements that can move on their own, with the Bloomberg report including the detail that it is designed to feel like a companion and become a physical manifestation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Tech outlet Yahoo Tech, also drawing on Bloomberg’s reporting, noted the device is meant to be moved around the home, with a built-in battery allowing it to be used while disconnected from a wall outlet.
Camera and Sensors Give the Speaker “Environmental Awareness”
Reporting from The Information, relayed by 9to5Mac, adds specifics on price and features that Bloomberg’s account did not spell out. The smart speaker is likely to be priced between $200 and $300, according to two people with knowledge of it, and will have a camera enabling it to take in information about its users and their surroundings, such as items on a nearby table or conversations people are having in the vicinity.
That camera-plus-sensor package is what separates the pitch from existing smart speakers. Rather than only listening for a wake word, the device is designed to build an ongoing picture of its owner’s routines and preferences over time.
Apple’s Trade-Secret Lawsuit Lands Days Before the Report
The timing is awkward for OpenAI. Apple sued OpenAI last week, accusing the AI company of stealing its trade secrets, and further claimed the allegations involved in the suit are merely “the tip of the iceberg” with more misconduct to be revealed during discovery — allegations OpenAI has denied.
TechCrunch also points out that the device was developed with help from many former Apple engineers who were instrumental in “creating products such as the iPhone and Mac,” per Bloomberg’s reporting — a staffing pipeline that likely fuels Apple’s suspicions about its own former talent building a rival product.
Jony Ive’s io Studio Leads Design as OpenAI Eyes Five Devices
The project sits inside OpenAI’s broader hardware bet built around Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief whose startup io was folded into OpenAI in a deal reported at roughly $6.4–6.5 billion. Speaking at Davos in January, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane told Axios that OpenAI is “on track” to unveil its first device in the second half of 2026, adding that while OpenAI wasn’t committing to the device actually going on sale this year, it was “looking at something in the latter part [of 2026],” calling that the “most likely” timeline while cautioning “we will see how things advance.”
The screenless speaker is reportedly just one of several form factors in the pipeline. Analysis site MLQ News, summarising the Bloomberg story, notes the speaker is one of approximately five hardware products in development, with a 2027 launch target that Apple’s trade-secrets lawsuit filed July 10 could delay.
A New Front Against Amazon Echo and Google Nest — and a Gaming Angle
If it ships, the speaker would plant OpenAI directly in territory long owned by Amazon Echo and Google Nest, both of which have already been layering large language models onto their own speaker lines. For gamers and streamers, an always-listening, camera-equipped ChatGPT companion raises obvious questions about how it might slot into a living-room or streaming setup — from voice-controlled media and smart-home lighting during a stream, to a conversational assistant that can “see” a desk full of peripherals and answer questions about them.
No regional pricing, release date or Australia/New Zealand availability has been confirmed, and OpenAI has not made any official announcement about the product. Given the reported US pricing band of $200 to $300, local buyers should expect the eventual AUD/NZD conversion to land at a premium once (and if) the device reaches this side of the Pacific, as is typical for US-first smart-home hardware.
