Marathon Season 3 Confirmed for September 22 With Perimeter Overhaul, New Runner Shell

Bungie has confirmed that Marathon Season 3 will begin on September 22, 2026, bringing a major overhaul of the starting zone Perimeter, a new Runner shell, and additional weapons and equipment to the PvPvE extraction shooter. The date was shared through an official Bungie update posted to the game’s Steam Community hub, alongside a wider roadmap for the remainder of the current season.

Season 3 Arrives as Season 2 “Nightfall” Wraps Up

September 22 also marks the scheduled end of Season 2, subtitled “Nightfall,” which has been running since June. Bungie stated that looking further ahead, Season 3 will begin on September 22 and brings big changes to the early game experience, including a revamp of Perimeter to add major new areas, encounters, and gameplay. The studio framed the update as a direct response to feedback about the game’s opening hours, which have long been considered one of the toughest hurdles for new players to clear.

Marathon launched on March 5, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and Bungie has stuck to a three-month seasonal cadence ever since. Season 1 ran until early June, when Season 2 introduced the Sentinel Runner shell, the Night Marsh zone and a new stat-customisation system called The Cradle.

Perimeter Gets Its Biggest Rework Since Launch

Perimeter has sat alongside Dire Marsh and Outpost as one of Marathon’s three launch zones, but it has consistently drawn criticism from the community as the weakest of the trio. Bungie’s own key-dates post promises the zone will be reshaped with new territory, fresh encounters and altered gameplay systems rather than a simple cosmetic pass. Season 3 will add another runner shell, a revamp of the starting map, Perimeter, new enemies, encounters, and more.

Coverage from Wccftech notes the timing is notable for another reason: September 22 is a little less than a month from Gamescom 2026, so it wouldn’t be too surprising if Bungie attempted to make a big splash with Marathon at the summer event in Cologne. A Gamescom showcase would give Bungie a natural stage to unveil the revamped zone in detail ahead of launch.

New Runner Shell, Weapons and Gear Join the Roster

Beyond the Perimeter rework, Bungie’s announcement confirms a new Runner shell will join Season 3, alongside additional weapons and equipment. Season 3 also introduces a new Runner shell, new weapons and equipment, and lots of other content and surprises. The studio has not yet detailed the shell’s abilities, name or playstyle, saying only that further specifics will follow closer to launch.

That mirrors how Bungie handled Season 2’s Sentinel shell, which was teased months ahead of its release before full kit details dropped nearer launch day. Independent analysis from dlcompare frames the new gear as the part of the update most players will rush to test first, since Season 3 will also add a new Runner shell, new weapons, and new equipment, and those are the spicy parts every player will want to test first, because new gear usually means new habits, new builds, and new ways to ruin someone else’s perfect run.

A Mid-Season Warm-Up: Vault Breaker Lands July 21 First

Before Season 3 arrives, Bungie is using the back half of Season 2 to trial a new PvE mode called Vault Breaker, set inside the Cryo Archive end-game zone. Mid-season will start on July 21 and will include Marathon’s experimental PVE mode: Vault Breaker, which lets players explore Cryo Archive as a crew, duo, or solo player, taking on a progressively challenging series of vaults and growing stronger across multiple matches with progression that’s unique to the mode.

Loot picked up inside Vault Breaker does not carry over once players extract, with one exception. Vault Breaker requires a special Sponsored Kit to queue up, and any gear or items you find stay behind when you exfil, with the exception of a new currency called Vault Data, which is found within vaults and can be exchanged for upgrades to Vault Breaker Sponsored Kits as well as gear usable in other modes. The same mid-season update also introduces the first iteration of the Cradle Evolution system, letting players who have maxed their Cradle reset it for a permanent Energy point and exclusive cosmetics.

Bungie has reiterated that none of this content sits behind a paywall. Speaking on the game’s post-launch plan back in March, the studio told PlayStation.Blog that Marathon’s seasonal updates will be available to everyone, with no expansions or DLC required. That free-to-access model has held through two seasons and is set to continue when Season 3 goes live in September, giving Runners on every platform — including those in New Zealand and Australia queuing into the same global servers — equal footing on day one of the new season.
