GTA 6 Countdown: Why GTA V’s 230M Sales Still Loom Over Nov. 19 Launch

With Grand Theft Auto VI now locked to a November 19, 2026 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the countdown has reignited a debate as old as the franchise itself: which Grand Theft Auto game actually deserves the crown. That argument is complicated by the fact that GTA V, released back in September 2013, is still selling by the million more than a decade later.
GTA 6 Locks In November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar Games confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026. That date arrived after the project slipped twice, moving from an original Fall 2025 window before Rockstar settled on the current date late last year, according to Forbes’ tracking of the delays.
Take-Two Interactive chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick has since reaffirmed that timeline multiple times, most recently telling investors the studio would not move the date again. In the earnings report, Zelnick said: “We believe Fiscal 2027 will establish new record levels of operating performance driven by the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, along with strong execution across our portfolio.”
Pre-orders for the Standard and Ultimate editions opened worldwide on June 25, 2026, priced at $79.99 and $99.99 respectively, rolling out region by region at midnight local time — a launch pattern that covers markets including Australia and New Zealand alongside North America and Europe.
GTA V’s 230 Million Sales Set a Bar No Rockstar Sequel Has Matched
Part of why fans keep circling back to older entries is simple: GTA V refuses to age out of the conversation. Grand Theft Auto V has now surpassed 230 million copies sold worldwide, hitting 225 million in February and routinely selling 5 million copies every quarter, according to Take-Two’s own fiscal disclosures as reported by RockstarINTEL.
That sustained momentum has pushed the wider franchise total close to half a billion units. The total sales of the Grand Theft Auto series is now at nearly 470 million copies worldwide, a figure that places GTA V itself just behind Minecraft on the all-time sales charts, trailing only that title’s 300-million-plus tally.
The commercial story runs deeper than unit counts. GTA 5 earned $800 million on its first day of release alone, and Alinea Analytics estimates cited by GamesRadar+ put the game at roughly 387,000 copies sold on PlayStation last month, contributing to a total of 1.8 million units sold on PS5 for 2026 — remarkable numbers for a game entering its thirteenth year on shelves.
Why GTA V’s Longevity Bankrolled GTA 6’s Long Development
That old-game revenue isn’t incidental to the wait for GTA 6 — it’s arguably why Rockstar could afford to take its time. GamesRadar+ notes that GTA V’s continued strength has given the studio room to push GTA 6’s release back without financial pressure, since the older title keeps generating recurrent spending through GTA Online.
Take-Two is now leaning on that legacy to justify its next fiscal year forecast. The publisher has guided to roughly $8.0 to $8.2 billion in net bookings for fiscal 2027, a target explicitly built around GTA 6’s November launch — a scale of expectation that only a franchise with GTA V’s track record could support.
Vice City Returns: Jason, Lucia and the State of Leonida
What Rockstar has actually confirmed about GTA 6 remains deliberately narrow, but it’s enough to explain the nostalgia pull. The game returns players to a modern-day Vice City inside the fictional state of Leonida, following dual protagonists Jason and Lucia through Florida’s criminal underworld — a direct callback to the series’ most beloved setting rather than an entirely new locale.
That decision to revisit Vice City rather than invent fresh turf is itself a nod to why the debate over “the best GTA” so often lands on the older games — Vice City’s early-2000s reputation, San Andreas’ scale, and GTA IV’s storytelling all still shape how fans judge every new Rockstar release, GTA 6 included.

Whatever GTA 6 achieves on November 19, it’s chasing a predecessor that turned a 2013 release into one of the most durable products in entertainment history. Whether Jason and Lucia’s Leonida can eventually out-earn Michael, Franklin and Trevor’s Los Santos is a question Rockstar itself likely won’t be able to answer for years — much like the “favourite GTA” debate that still runs through every gaming forum and pub conversation from Auckland to Los Angeles.
