FF7 Revelation Director: Story Ends in Base Game, DLC Would Be Yuffie-Style Spinoff

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will wrap up the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy’s story entirely within its base game, with director Naoki Hamaguchi confirming that any post-launch DLC would take the form of a character-focused spinoff rather than a continuation of the main plot. Speaking to Japanese outlet Automaton, Hamaguchi addressed mounting fan speculation that the trilogy’s true ending could be reserved for paid expansions.

Hamaguchi Rules Out a DLC-Locked Ending

AUTOMATON got the opportunity to catch up with director Naoki Hamaguchi, who talked at length about his opinion on streaming culture, touched on rumors circulating about the series’ grand finale, and discussed a possible DLC and what players can expect from the future of the franchise. Asked directly whether Revelation’s ending could be withheld from players who skip future DLC, Hamaguchi was unambiguous.

“The story will be concluded within the main game. We’re serious about concluding the series with FFVII Revelation, and we’re proceeding with development with that goal in mind,” he told the outlet. The comment directly addresses concerns that had been building since Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth both released expansions or add-on content after launch, most notably the Yuffie-focused Episode INTERmission that shipped with the Intergrade re-release.

Why the “Story Expansion Pass” Leak Sparked Alarm

Fan nerves around the topic were stoked by a large-scale leak on the Epic Games Store that confirmed story expansions are coming to Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, with some fans assuming these would adapt the existing Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus storylines, though that doesn’t appear to be the case. Hamaguchi’s remarks to Automaton were widely read as a direct response to that speculation, reassuring players that whatever the leaked “Story Expansion Pass” turns out to contain, it won’t be required to see how the remake trilogy actually ends.

Even so, Hamaguchi stopped short of ruling out expanded content altogether. He acknowledged that at this point both the media and the fan community are expecting DLC to come, sensing immense expectations for the franchise and a sense that fans don’t want it to end yet. He added that things haven’t crystallized yet, so the team can’t certainly say they’re going to make DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, though genuine fan demand and support could change that.

Any Expansion Would Follow Yuffie’s Episode INTERmission Blueprint

Pressed on what a hypothetical expansion might actually contain, Hamaguchi pointed to the studio’s own precedent rather than the wider spinoff media that surrounds Final Fantasy VII. “If we were to hypothetically release any DLC, we would likely want to create a kind of spin-off focused on a specific character that depicts their untold stories,” he explained, before drawing the direct comparison to the game’s most recent side story: “It would kind of be like what we did with Yuffie with FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, and I think there is demand for it among fans. So, in case we do end up considering making a DLC, this is the kind of thing that we’d likely attempt to do.”

That framing matters because Episode INTERmission ran alongside the events of the first remake rather than extending its main timeline, meaning any Revelation expansion would likely fill in gaps around named side characters instead of pushing the plot past its intended conclusion. GamesRadar’s own coverage of the interview reached the same reading, noting that any purely hypothetical DLC that gets made will need to focus on the “untold stories” of specific characters rather than continuing the story.

A Decade-Long Trilogy Closes in Spring 2027

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final installment in the FFVII Remake series, announced by Square Enix on June 6, and set to release for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox on PC), Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with the launch date scheduled for spring 2027. That simultaneous multiplatform rollout marks a break from the earlier games in the trilogy, which launched first on PlayStation before reaching other platforms later.

For Australian and New Zealand fans who’ve followed the remake project since its 2020 debut, the confirmation removes a genuine point of anxiety heading into next year’s launch: whatever Square Enix eventually announces for post-release content, the emotional payoff of Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and the rest of the cast’s decade-spanning arc will land in full when the base game ships, not months later behind a storefront paywall.
