Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves Season 2 Wraps With Kenshiro at EVO 2026

SNK closed out Season 2 of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves in dramatic fashion, releasing Fist of the North Star icon Kenshiro the moment the EVO 2026 Grand Finals ended in Las Vegas on June 28. The studio confirmed in an official press release that Kenshiro is “now available” as the sixth and final DLC fighter of the season, arriving alongside the announcement that Season 3 will begin in July 2026.
The timing wasn’t accidental. SNK released the character via shadow-drop, tying the release to the championship bracket so that players worldwide could download him at the same moment the competitive crowd was still celebrating. For fans in New Zealand and Australia, that late Sunday-night US timing meant the update was already live and waiting when they logged on for their Monday morning session.
A Six-Month Cadence Rare for Modern Fighting Games
Kenshiro’s arrival brought Season 2 to a close after a run that started in January. The move closed out Season 2 of City of the Wolves, a six-character run that delivered one new fighter per month from January through June 2026 — a content cadence rare in modern fighting games, where full seasons typically span a year or longer. Xbox Wire’s own announcement of the season back in January confirmed the opening beat of that schedule, noting that the battle heats up as Season 2 of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves officially began on January 22, 2026, when Taekwondo specialist Kim Jae Hoon led the charge.
Kenshiro’s own build-up stretched back even further. Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star is South Town bound, three months on from his landmark reveal at premier anime event AnimeJapan 2026! That March reveal locked in a release window that SNK stuck to almost to the day, with the character finally playable to the public within hours of EVO’s closing bracket.
Xiao Hai Wins Record Seventh EVO Title From the Losers’ Bracket
The DLC drop capped a championship weekend that had its own headline story. Zeng “Xiao Hai” Zhuojun won the Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves championship at EVO 2026 in Las Vegas on June 28, fighting back from the losers bracket to claim his seventh career EVO title — a figure no other active competitor in any fighting game has matched. The Chinese competitor, representing Team Falcons, completed his run through the losers side by defeating AbuOmar in the losers semifinals and then claiming the Grand Finals, cementing his status as the defining player of City of the Wolves’ inaugural competitive year.
The championship match was fought in front of one of the tournament’s biggest crowds of the weekend. Xiaohai entered EVO 2026 as the defending champion of EVO Japan 2026 and Combo Breaker 2026; adding this Las Vegas title cements his standing as the dominant force in a competitive field that drew 444 entrants at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Tetsuo Hara’s On-Stage Endorsement and the Hokuto no Ken Tie-In
Fist of the North Star creator Tetsuo Hara appeared in a recorded message shown to the EVO crowd shortly before the Grand Finals, welcoming his character into SNK’s roster. “The time has come for [Kenshiro] to leave the post-apocalyptic world behind and take a trip to South Town,” Hara said, according to Shacknews, adding: “No matter how times change, the determination to stay true to one’s beliefs is something that will always inspire people.”
The crossover also lines up with a wider media push around the character. His appearance as the final Season 2 DLC in FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves coincides with the all-new Fist of the North Star: HOKUTO NO KEN anime, currently airing in Japan and around the world. In the game itself, SNK describes Kenshiro’s story mode arrival with an unmistakably North Star flourish: Kenshiro stirs and slowly takes in the unfamiliar surroundings. This is not the desolate urban wilderness he calls home, but a modern-day metropolis: South Town. He’s voiced by Clayton Alexander (EN), Shunsuke Takeuchi (JA) across both language tracks.
Season 3 Teases Rick Strowd and Lord Laocorn Gaudeamus
SNK didn’t wait to move on to what’s next. Producer Yasuyuki Oda took the EVO stage before the top-8 matches began to confirm the next chapter of content, with EventHubs reporting that starting in July, the very next month we’re heading towards, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be kicking off its third season and keep pushing out content to its players.
Two teaser clips released by SNK in the weeks before EVO have already given fans an idea of who might headline the new season. The earlier teaser, which surfaced in early June, points toward Rick Strowd — a boxing character introduced in Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 in 1998, depicted entering a ring in what appears to be a match against Tizoc. Strowd, known as the “White Wolf of the Ring,” has a dedicated following among longtime SNK fans. The second clip depicts Lord Laocorn Gaudeamus — the armor-wielding antagonist from Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture, the 1994 OVA that completed the franchise’s original animated trilogy. SNK, however, has not formally confirmed either character for the new season.
Developers speaking to press at EVO suggested Kenshiro’s fit within the roster was central to the design process. Producer Shinya Tamaki, discussing why the studio chose the character, told MMORPG.com that looking at his story and the way that Fatal Fury is, and the way that Fist of The North Star is in his journey, and the journeys that happen in Fatal Fury, we feel like both worlds kind of share deep similarities, and so, overall we’re just looking at it like this is basically a perfect fit for the character.
