Battlefield 6 Season 4 Goes Live With Naval Warfare, New Tsuru Reef Map

Battlefield 6’s fourth seasonal update, subtitled “Pacific Front,” went live on July 21, bringing naval combat to the shooter for the first time alongside a brand-new map called Tsuru Reef, according to Battlefield Studios and EA’s official season roadmap. Battlefield 6 and REDSEC Season 4 began on July 21 at 4 a.m. PT (12 p.m. UTC) with the return of Naval Warfare and the debut of a brand-new map for the franchise: Tsuru Reef. It’s the first of three staggered content drops that will run through mid-September, in keeping with the roughly three-month cadence the studio has followed since Season 2.

Tsuru Reef Becomes Battlefield 6’s Biggest Map

The centrepiece of Pacific Front is Tsuru Reef, an archipelago map built specifically around ships and open water. The setting is a NATO base under joint control of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, currently under siege from the fictional Pax Armata faction, with the archipelago packing in a luxury resort, a dormant volcano, and wide-open water for naval skirmishes built to support both large-scale combined-arms battles and tighter, more tactical modes.

Independent outlet GosuGamers reported that the Tsuru Reef map is notably larger than Railway to Golmud, which is Battlefield 6’s biggest map by far, effectively making it the largest space DICE has shipped for the game so far. Reporters who got early hands-on time echoed that scale first-hand: Tsuru Reef, the map anchoring the season’s return to the water, is gigantic, according to a Military.com hands-on preview from a Battlefield Studios event, which also noted the map felt strong across both Conquest and Escalation modes.

Two new naval vehicles arrive with Tsuru Reef, and the update adds three fresh guns to the arsenal. The update brings naval vehicles and three new weapons: the EF88 assault rifle, the BROD 3 carbine, and the DRM VSSM sniper rifle.

Wake Island Returns August 18 as the Map’s 11th Version

Phase two, dubbed Top Gun, arrives on August 18 and centres on the return of one of the franchise’s most storied battlegrounds. August 18 brings the Top Gun update, where Wake Island is coming back; the map debuted in Battlefield 1942, later returned in Battlefield V, and has now been rebuilt for Battlefield 6’s scale and mechanics, arriving with a dedicated dogfighting mode and new aircraft.

According to GameSpot, this will actually be the map’s eleventh outing rather than a simple remake. Wake Island is one of the Battlefield franchise’s most iconic maps, having appeared in 2002’s original Battlefield 1942 and nine other entries since then, with its most recent Battlefield V version releasing in 2019, and its appearance in Battlefield 6 will be the 11th version of the map. For a franchise built partly on horseshoe-shaped island siege warfare, that track record makes Wake Island something of a bellwether for how well DICE can translate an old favourite into current-gen scale and destruction.

Tidal Strike Closes the Season on September 15

The season wraps with a third phase called Tidal Strike. Closing out the season on September 15 is Tidal Strike, a themed event with challenges, a diver’s knife added as a new melee weapon, and updates to the REDSEC battle royale mode bringing “secrets” and proximity chat, voice communication with nearby players based on in-game location.

EA’s own roadmap post also flags features arriving later in Season 4 that build directly on Tsuru Reef rather than adding new terrain. The biggest map will get even bigger later in the season, letting players fight in a colossal battleground without limits and experience massive-scale warfare with the addition of playable aircraft carriers, alongside a reimagined return of Carrier Strike in the expanded playspace. Content creators aren’t being left out either: the studio is preparing Spectator Mode and Custom Lobbies through Battlefield Portal during Season 4, aimed at competitors and creators wanting more control over how matches are captured.

A Third Season of Reviving Classic Maps

Wake Island’s comeback isn’t an isolated case this year. Season 3’s June “Blastpoint” update already leaned on nostalgia by reworking a Battlefield 3 fan favourite. Blastpoint introduced Cairo Bazaar, a reimagined take on the Battlefield 3 classic Grand Bazaar, moving the action to the streets and markets of Cairo, Egypt while preserving the tight infantry-focused gameplay that made the original map a fan favourite. Taken together with Tsuru Reef and Wake Island, Season 4 continues a pattern of Battlefield Studios pairing brand-new environments with rebuilt classics almost every update since launch.

For players in Australia and New Zealand, the Season 4 update window of 4 a.m. Pacific Time on July 21 translated to roughly 10pm AEST that same evening and around midnight NZST heading into July 22, meaning most local squads got their first crack at Tsuru Reef during a Tuesday-night session rather than a daytime drop. With Wake Island’s dogfighting-focused return still a few weeks out and a season-ending naval showcase promised for September, Battlefield 6’s current roadmap gives both newcomers and franchise veterans plenty to argue about next time the conversation turns to the series’ best-ever maps.
