Amy Pascal Likens Sadie Sink’s Brand New Day Secret to No Way Home Leak

Spider-Man: Brand New Day producer Amy Pascal has drawn a direct line between the studio’s tight-lipped handling of Sadie Sink’s still-unconfirmed character and the way Sony and Marvel managed the multiverse reveal in Spider-Man: No Way Home. “When we had the three Spideys in the last movie, and it was the worst-kept secret in Hollywood, everybody sort of pretended not to know, but knew,” Pascal said in the new issue of SFX magazine. The comments, first reported by GamesRadar+, arrive just weeks before Brand New Day’s release with Sink’s role remaining officially unconfirmed.

Sink’s casting was announced back in March 2025, and despite more than a year of trailers, set photos, and fan theories, Marvel and Sony have never officially named who she is playing. The overwhelming fan consensus points to X-Men telepath Jean Grey, but studio silence has held remarkably firm for a project of this size.

Pascal Says Audiences “Love to Be Surprised”

Pascal expanded on why Marvel and Sony are willing to sit through months of speculation rather than confirm or deny anything about Sink’s part. “I think people love to be surprised. They don’t really want to know everything. They want the experience of what movies give you, which is shock and awe and surprise. So I think in the same way that we’ve been really disciplined, I think that’s what the audience is also craving,” she said.

It’s a philosophy the producer has now applied twice on consecutive Spider-Man films. Ahead of No Way Home’s 2021 release, the lead-up to the film was filled with frenzied social media chatter about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men swinging in from their corner of the multiverse, and that, as audiences now know, turned out to be true. Pascal’s comparison suggests the studio views that saga less as a cautionary tale about leaks and more as proof that a determined non-denial campaign can still land as an emotional gut-punch on release night.

Sadie Sink’s Own Blackout: No Audition, No Script Until London

The secrecy hasn’t just been a marketing exercise aimed at the public — it extended to how Sink herself was brought onto the production. According to Variety, Sink was offered her role without an audition, having worked with director Destin Daniel Cretton on the 2017 film “The Glass Castle,” and she didn’t receive a script until she landed in London. That level of compartmentalisation is unusual even by Marvel’s famously guarded standards, and it lines up with Pascal’s framing of a production that has been “really disciplined” about protecting its biggest twist.

Sink has separately said she was caught off guard by just how much attention her mystery casting generated, given she wasn’t prepared for the character to become a talking point on the scale it has. Her reticence has mirrored the production’s own approach: acknowledge the intrigue, confirm nothing.

Brand New Day’s Production Team and July 31 Release

Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, with Pascal producing alongside Kevin Feige, Avi Arad and Rachel O’Connor. Produced by Columbia Pictures, Marvel Studios, and Pascal Pictures, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is intended to be the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man film series following Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.

Deadline reporting cited on Wikipedia’s production timeline notes that Feige had largely handed day-to-day oversight of Brand New Day to Pascal while he focused on Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, which helps explain why Pascal has become the film’s most visible voice on marketing decisions like the Sink blackout. In January 2026, Justin Kroll from Deadline Hollywood reported that Feige had been solely focused on the production of Doomsday and its sequel Avengers: Secret Wars for the last year, and had let Pascal handle much of the production for Brand New Day.

What the Silence Means for a Franchise Betting on Word of Mouth

For a franchise this large, keeping a single casting reveal under wraps for over a year is itself a statement of confidence — it signals Sony and Marvel believe the reveal is strong enough to carry opening weekend buzz on its own, rather than needing to be spent early in a trailer cycle. Given No Way Home’s box-office run was widely credited to that same tension between “everybody knew” and “nobody could say,” Pascal’s comments suggest the studio is deliberately trying to recreate that dynamic rather than avoid a repeat of the 2021 leaks.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to open in theatres on July 31, 2026, giving audiences worldwide — including in New Zealand and Australia, where the MCU’s Spider-Man instalments have consistently drawn strong opening-weekend crowds — only weeks left to speculate before the identity of Sink’s character is finally settled on the big screen.
