Microsoft Surface Pro 9

Surface Pro began as the first of its category – a tablet that can replace your laptop, offering touch, ink, a full-size precision touchpad, and a productive keyboard finely crafted and satisfying to touch. Over the years it’s been refined, tuned and perfected. In that same time, we’ve seen the category take off. Today, you don’t have to go far to see competing interpretations. Microsoft take great pride in their ability to inspire and push the industry forward. Still, there’s a reason why Surface Pro remains the 2-in-1 to beat, and it comes back to the original vision the team shared a decade ago that merged the benefits of a powerful laptop, versatile tablet and ink-ready studio. Now, Surface Pro 9 raises the bar again.

Microsoft just revealed info on their new Surface devices and PC accessories to diversify the Surface range for 2021 through to 2022.

On the threshold of Windows 11, this is the largest update to the Surface portfolio in its history.

With PixelSense displays, new pen technology, premium mics and cameras, powerful silicon, and versatile form factors, the new Surface devices are designed to take Windows innovation to the next level.

First up is the Surface Pro 8, bringing an entirely modernised redesign to the most powerful Pro.

Get more screen on a high-resolution 13-inch display, with curvature updated to refine its profile and maintain an ultra-portable form factor.

Surface Pro 8 features 11th Gen Intel Core processors, new port selection (notably two Thunderbolt ports), and next-step advancement on cameras and speakers. Its new Type Cover will pair perfectly with the Surface Slim Pen 2, with built-in storage and wireless charging.

Surface Go 3 is the most portable Surface touchscreen 2-in-1, utilising the same Surface Go design with more horsepower.

A next evolution in the Surface Go product line has faster Intel Core processors, all-day battery life, and built in Microsoft security. Optimised for digital pen and touch, the tablet-to-laptop versatility makes this device ideal for everyday tasks, homework, and play.

Surface Go 3 will be available from 5 October 2021.

 The Surface Adaptive Kit helps users adapt their Surface. While this tool can be used by anyone looking to adapt their Surface, the Surface Adaptive Kit was created to adapt Surface devices to those with low vision, blindness, and/or limited strength.

For use with all Windows based devices, the Ocean Plastic Mouse is a small step forward in Microsoft’s larger sustainability journey.

The shell is made with 20% recycled ocean plastic, a breakthrough in materials technology that begins with the removal of plastic waste from oceans and waterways. This product’s small box is 100% recyclable and is NZ$39.95.

The Ocean Plastic Mouse will be available at the Microsoft Store from 5 October 2021.

And lastly, the Microsoft Modern USB-C Headset is certified for Microsoft Teams with high-quality audio and voice. Having a super lightweight design, meeting controls, and easy setup helps you stay connected and focused all day long.

With Desktops, users can customise spaces for each aspect of their lives, such as work, gaming, or school, and easily switch between them.

Users also get faster access to information they care about with Widgets, which provides a curated news feed powered by AI and best-in-class browser performance from Microsoft Edge. For creators and publishers, Widgets opens new real estate within Windows to deliver personalised content.

Windows 11 is designed to be a secure operating system perfect for hybrid work and learning. Secure by design, it has new built-in security technologies and provides a Zero Trust-ready operating system to protect data and access across devices.

Windows 11 comes with an all-new Microsoft store that has been rebuilt for speed, variety and convenience. It features a wider catalogue of first and third-party apps that have been tested for security and family safety, bringing incredible experiences to entertain, inspire and connect users. For the first time, Android apps will be available in the Microsoft Store, and users can easily download these apps through the Amazon App store, a seamless process that was made possible through Microsoft’s partnership with Amazon.

Windows 11 offers users a faster way to stay in touch with loved ones with the integration of Microsoft Teams into the taskbar, which allows users to instantly connect through text, chat, voice or video with loved ones anywhere in the world across Windows, Android or iOS. For friends and family without the Teams apps, users can still connect with them via two-way SMS.

Integration with productivity features of Teams is also improved, allowing users to start presenting or muting themselves directly from the Taskbar.

 Microsoft is taking a step further to unlock new opportunities for creators and developers by creating a more open ecosystem with Windows 11 that will benefit developers and bring more apps, games, movies, shows, and web content to users.

Windows 11 will be available on new PCs and through a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 PCs beginning this holiday.

Microsoft Corp has announced the inclusion of te reo Māori in its Microsoft Translator application, which will enable instant translations of text from more than 60 languages into te reo Māori and vice versa.

Through the Microsoft Translator application, the Māori language will be available to more people around the world through the use of advanced machine learning translation technology. Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, announced the news today via his blog; “To focus only on shaping the future ignores the value of the past, as well as our responsibility to preserve and celebrate the te reo Māori heritage. Which is why we are proud to announce the inclusion of te reo Māori in our free Microsoft Translator app.”

The free Translator software will be widely available on computers or smart devices, enabling people around the world to instantly translate text and documents into te reo Māori and vice versa, as well as the many other languages supported by the app such as Spanish and Chinese.

“Microsoft has been working with language experts on projects that include te reo Māori in our platforms and software for more than 14 years. We want to provide better access to Māori language and culture via the technology Kiwis use every day. Prime Minister Ardern has called for 1 million new te reo Māori speakers by 2040. We’re determined to support this goal, and including te reo Māori in Microsoft Translator is one more action we can take to help make the language accessible to as many people as possible,” said Anne Taylor, Education Lead at Microsoft New Zealand.

Microsoft Translator needs to ‘learn’ te reo Māori in order to provide accurate translations that grow and change with the language, recognising that language is a breathing, living thing. The translation model employed for te reo Māori will use Microsoft’s AI technology, which will allow the accuracy of the translations to be continually updated and refined.

Te Taka Keegan, senior lecturer in Computer Science at Waikato University, is one of the many experts who helped guide the project from the beginning and is excited to finally see the platform made available to millions of people worldwide.

“The development of this Māori language tool would not have been possible without many people working towards a common goal over many years. I’m delighted to finally see this project come to life and not only support the everyday use of te reo Māori in our schools and workplaces here in Aotearoa, but help scholars, researchers and ordinary people access and study the language around the world.”

Brad Smith said the te reo Māori project forms part of a broader programme of work to support indigenous languages and culture worldwide.

“When a community loses a language, it loses its connection to the past – and part of its present. It loses a piece of its identity. As we think about protecting this heritage and the importance of preserving language, we believe that new technology can help,” he said.

This is Windows 10X.

Windows 10X is the best of Windows 10 built to enable unique experiences on multi-posture dual-screen PCs. Microsoft have taken the Windows 10 that users know and love and built Windows 10X in a way that marries the familiar with the new.

Between work and family, our time is precious.

With a dual-screen PC and Windows 10X, people can get things done on-the-go faster than ever: take notes on one screen while reviewing the full project proposal on the other while in transit; sit down at a table to write a thoughtful email on a hardware keyboard while waiting for lunch; and then watch a video, browse the web or read a book as you get back to your life.

Fans of Windows 10 today will be able to use Windows 10X with practically no learning curve.

The navigation and functionality will feel familiar and a Windows 10X PC will feel like a natural member of today’s Windows 10 family.

But Windows 10X also includes some advancements in the core technology of Windows that optimise it for flexible postures and more mobile use. Microsoft needed to deliver battery life that could drive not just one, but two screens. They wanted the operating system to be able to manage the battery effect of their huge catalog of Windows apps, whether they were written in the last month or five years ago. And they wanted to deliver the hardware performance and compatibility users expect from Windows 10.

To accomplish these goals, Microsoft didn’t wipe the slate clean and start over with a brand-new operating system. Their approach is an evolution of where they’ve been going with Windows 10 for the last few years.

For those of you not familiar, there are a common set of shared technologies in Windows 10 that unlock a whole host of devices across the spectrum from consumers to businesses and industries.

Internally, Microsoft call these shared technologies “one core” but what matters most to users is what they enable. Today, Microsoft build desktop PCs, Xbox consoles and HoloLens using this technology. Windows 10X joins the family, built on the latest investments in these shared technologies including newly implemented support for running Win32 applications in a container.

This, together with further componentisation and additional investments, gives them the power to deliver more flexible experiences with a wide range of input types and hardware postures all while managing Windows applications and how they use the battery. 

It also has the added benefit of allowing Microsoft to innovate in the shared technologies and quickly bring these across the devices built on top of them, enabling acceleration on how innovation reaches the largest number of users across a vast array of devices.

Windows 10X will be available on dual-screen and foldable devices starting in the fall of 2020, in time for the holiday season (U.S.). These will include both Microsoft Surface and devices from several Windows ecosystem partners including ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. The first wave of devices will vary in size, design and specs, and be powered by Intel.\

Surface Laptop 3

The new Surface Laptop 3 balances power and elegance, making it the perfect everyday laptop.

Microsoft also introduced Surface Laptop 3 15”, adding a larger screen and industry-leading integrated graphics performance with the new AMD Ryzen Surface Edition processor. Surface Laptop 3 offers a more comfortable typing experience with a full 1.33mm key travel, now with a 20% larger glass trackpad, both USB-A and USB-C and Fast Charging, taking your Surface device to an 80% charge in about an hour.

Improved front-facing cameras, OmniSonic speakers and dual far-field Studio Mics deliver crystal clear sound and audio whether you’re on a conference call, listening to music or watching a movie.

Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X

Surface Neo

Surface Neo is dual-screen device built for productivity on Windows 10X, an expression of Windows 10.

A 360-degree full-friction hinge connects two 9” screens, enabling Surface Neo to adapt to whatever posture you need in the moment.

When you open it you have a full-size 13” display in the thinnest LCD in its class. It’s built for productivity and multitasking like a true PC would be – running full productivity apps, with a removable keyboard and compatibility with Surface Pen and Bluetooth mouse.

Surface Duo

Surface Duo is the first Surface to fit in your pocket.

Surface Duo brings together the best of Microsoft productivity experiences, Android apps and Surface hardware design into a single device you can take anywhere. And, yes, it makes phone calls.

To support Surface Neo, Microsoft are introducing Windows 10X, an expression of Windows 10 designed for a new category of dual-screen PCs. With Surface Duo they are building upon Android to marry cutting edge hardware with familiar software and services.  Microsoft state that they are excited to work with developers and the industry to create the next wave of dual-screen computing and unlock a new era of mobile creativity.

All devices are planned for a U.S. Holiday release in 2020.

Microsoft have excitedly announced to us here at STG that their new Surface Headphones will be available in New Zealand beginning in March 2019.

It’s been an exciting start to the year for Surface. In January 2019, Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, Surface Studio 2, and Surface Headphones launched across Asia for customers in China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan. Last week Microsoft showed strong momentum announcing Q2 results. Surface revenue increased 39%, with its biggest quarter ever, as Microsoft’s new devices clearly resonated with customers across commercial and consumer segments.

Beginning in March 2019, Surface Headphones will launch in eight new markets, Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, and Switzerland.
