Discord is testing a Living Room layout for voice channels that seats each participant’s avatar inside a shared virtual room rather than the usual grid of tiles. The optional view was first surfaced by Discord Previews on X on 22 June 2026, and Discord confirmed the experiment in a teaser post on 24 June, asking users for their thoughts on “a new way to hang out in vc.”

this isn’t available to test just yet but taking recommendations on ideas

— Discord (@discord) June 24, 2026

The feature is not available to test. Discord stated in a follow-up post that the layout “isn’t available to test just yet” and that the team is taking recommendations on ideas, so what exists now is an early experiment rather than a rollout.

How the Discord Living Room Layout Works

The Living Room is an optional way of viewing a voice call, not a forced change. Users switch the default display of a voice channel into Living Room mode, which arranges each member’s avatar in a seat around a virtual room. Anyone who prefers the standard grid keeps it.

Seating is assigned automatically at first, with each member given a pre-decided spot when they join. From there, participants can freely swap seats if they would rather sit elsewhere. Discord Previews also spotted references to “statuses” that would let everyone in the chat see what each person is up to, but these have not been implemented yet.

No Spatial Audio in the Living Room Layout Yet

The Living Room layout does not currently use spatial audio, so the direction of a friend’s voice will not change based on where their avatar is sitting. That leaves a gap between the visual of a shared room and the way the audio actually behaves.

That may change. On Reddit, Discord product manager Sharon “blitz_sharon” Coone teased that spatial audio and the Living Room feature could be combined, writing, “maybe they will combine maybe they will not.” Responding to a user worried about the visual layout hurting their already poor performance, she added that “not hurting performance is absolutely top of mind for us.” In the same thread she said the team is “just playing around” and wants community feedback soon.

The timing lines up with Discord’s recent voice work. The platform rolled out spatial audio as a separate feature shortly before this, alongside an upgraded Nitro tier and end-to-end encryption, so the building blocks for a more immersive voice experience are already in place.

Why Discord Is Building a Virtual Hangout

Discord is where squads coordinate, esports teams plan, and friends drop into voice chat to talk while they game. Voice is the default way players communicate, with one widely cited Statista figure putting it at the primary method for around 70 percent of online players. The Living Room layout leans into the low-effort drop-in culture that defines those channels, giving a casual hangout a visual home rather than a grid of tiles.

The community response in the Reddit thread centred on two recurring asks: the ability to disable the view for performance or comfort reasons, and customisation such as custom backgrounds, drag-and-drop seating, and proper avatars. Coone confirmed users will be able to choose which view they see. How much customisation Discord allows, and whether any of it sits behind Nitro or boosts, has not been addressed.

What Comes Next for the Living Room Layout

As of 24 June 2026, the Living Room layout is an experiment with no confirmed rollout date and details still subject to change. Discord is actively collecting feedback through its socials and feedback portal, so the next signal will be whether the feature moves from internal testing into a public beta and whether spatial audio gets folded in when it does.
