Samsung have been the kings of the Android Tablet realm for as long as we have had them on the market, and during the course of the market domination they have also dabbled in Windows as a mobile platform.

In a bold venture, Samsung recently released the Galaxy TabPro S – a Windows 10 12 inch med spec’d Tablet to take on the iPad Pro and from a price comparison, Microsoft’s very own Surface 4.

From the onset the Galaxy TabPro S comes with a magnetic keyboard cover, which you’ll find either as helpful or a hindrance.

The cover connects magnetically to the base of the TabPro S and almost automatically folds into position. However, due to a light weight and somewhat flimsy material there are instances where the keyboard cover that folds into a stand formation can barely, or does give way holding up the tablet. During our time reviewing the TabPro S we opted to not use it for the most part.

The Galaxy TabPro S is designed for non heavy PC / Laptop users, with specs mirroring that of a high end smartphone.

Under the bonnet you’ll find 4GB RAM and a Intel Core M (Dualcore 2.2GHz) handling the juice. Powerful enough yes, but not for high end applications. The 12 inch FHD (2160 x 1440) screen is beautifully responsive but with a larger bezel than I’d expected and surprisingly there is no Stylus included with the TabPro S.

The Front and Rear Cameras are certainly not designed for high end selfies or photo’s to the likes of a Galaxy S7. 5MP for both ended Camera’s are enough though for a Skyping.

Nonetheless, Samsung have made up for the lower spec’s in the comfort and ease of use. firstly, the TabPro S is thin – superly thin and 0.6cm. Built with 4G capability off the bat you just place in a simcard and you’re good to go on the road, anywhere.

Being that it is Windows 10 (and dear to our hearts at StG) your TabPro S will sync up with your Xbox One to enable wireless streaming of gameplay.

This super excellent feature means game time in bed. Game time virtually anywhere.

The Galaxy TabPro S is not the Laptop killer that I had hoped for, it is more of a intermediate device, a great travel companion for personal or business use. Also an excellent productivity device for students with its savvy price point of just over $1,500.00 depending on retailer.

Built in flash storage of 128GB will for the use that the TabPro S can offer should be enough, otherwise you will need to use cloud storage – as there is no USB sockets. I assume that this by design as the unit is extremely thin so it would have been next to impossible to place one on the side, but a huge drawback for those that are digital hoarders or even those that save documents to their key ring attached pen-drives (like me!).

It’s clear that Samsung have aimed to design the most thinnest and lightest Windows device on the market, and they have. The Galaxy TabPro S, despite its mid to low specs and missing external storage options is still a stellar multimedia device for on the go and of course, gaming (via streaming).

I also suspect that the use of the M core is to reduce the stress on the battery – which has astounding life. Up to 10.5 hours with medium use (streaming does reduce this to around 4 hours in our tests), but a fast charger that Samsung are known for with their Galaxy Smartphones ensures that an hour or less of charging time gets you up and running again at maximum battery life.

If you have been eyeing up a Surface Pro or even a Pro Book but it’s not within your budget, or even, is an overkill for what you need, the Galaxy TabPro S will be perfect contender.
