If there was ever a game made for Switch, Rad Rogers is definitely one of them!

First reviewed a few months back, Rad Rogers is a love letter to the 90’s platformers and a retake on a game of that era.

Without rehashing the past review already here on STG I’ll just simplify what Rad Rogers is; a 2.5 D side scroll platform adventure game, where you as Roger, a kid who loves video games, is sucked in to a video game world.

Helped by his pal, a video game console called Dusty, who is strapped to his back and full of wise cracks and one liners, Roger must both save and escape the gaming world and get back to his own. To do this he must overcome in-Level puzzles, shoot up baddies and collect pieces of a medallion for each Level. Then there’s hats. a lot of hats. These are not always easy to collect – they don’t offer anything other than a bit of fun.

Now, Rad Rogers has been re-released and perhaps is now the game that developers Slipgate Studios and 3D Realms had always aimed for it to be.

Rad Rogers – Radical Edition includes a new character roster. If being a kid in a big bad video gaming world isn’t really your thing, then take on the perilous adventure as Duke Nukem, Inhabitant, Lo Wang, Cosmo, Evil Dead (Ash) and other iconic action game heroes which all have a special skill. In all there are five new playable characters added to the game, Roger and Inhabitant are selectable right off the bat and the rest either discoverable throughout the Levels or unlockable by completing differing objectives throughout game play.

C0-0p game mode has been also added.

Each one of the Levels is really indepth, a decent amount of game time per Level and you will of course want to go back and collect up each collectible if you are a completest (like me). You are scored, old skool style, at the conclusion of each Level – including the time it took you to blast your way through a Level.

Rad Rogers is a fantastic title for portable aswell as home based console. For those that had already picked up Rad Rogers, you will get a free upgrade to the Radical Edition.

I can also see Rad Rogers as being right at home on mobile.

Tricky and at times intense, Rad Rogers – Radical Edition is an explosion of 90’s goodness fused with an overdose of modern day eye candy and gameplay.

Be rad, and own this one.

Put on your New Kids on the Block CD and grip your console controller for a button mashing retro romp.

Developers Slipgate Studios and 3D Realms have released the kickstarter funded remaster of the old Apogee 90’s game Rad Rogers. A side scrolling platformer that video gaming was built on during the cartridge days of gaming.

Completely overhauled with 2.5D and in some environmental aspects, 3D, Rad Rogers sees a young kid, yes, called Rad Rogers, team up with his home console called Dusty (voiced by Jon St. John who also does the voice for Duke Nukem) after a waking dream where he is sucked in to the a video game world.

Rogers must find a way out, and with Dusty strapped to his back, the duo run, jump and gun Level by Level, avoiding traps, hazards and the cliche floating platforms, while collecting up weapon boosts and gems. Oh and then there’s 18 Hats to be found aswell.

The Hats do not actually do anything to the gameplay significantly – but Roger can wear them. So yeah… it’s a throwback I guess.

Slotted throughout your dominance of this gaming world there are what I liken to Bonus Levels, where Rogers is on a Pogo Stick and must jump from platform to platform, rising to the top, collecting Gems and other goodies, avoiding the ever increasing water level. Totally fun, and addictive. Then there’s a couple of predictable Bosses Levels too.

Each of the 8 Levels (10 if you include the Final Pogo Level and the games’ Final Boss) is presented by way of a mini-map within World 1. No, there is no further Worlds after the first one. Sadly.

Rad Rogers does not take itself seriously. There is no way it really could.

The game has been designed with the reflection that it is a remaster of an old cartridge game and so there are many quips and remarks from Dusty and other NPC’s that either hearken back to games of the 90’s or just do a complete piss-take of the old but still enjoyable 2D platformers.

An option at the start of the game is to select whether you’re an Adult or a Child. This naturally tones down the euphemisms, course language and gore for the younger gamers. But I can see kids opting for the Adult selection right away.

Gameplay is super simple.

Jump, Shoot and Run. I found that Rad Rogers is best played with the D-Pad, and when needing to shoot in any direction use the Right Trigger to fire and the Right Analogue stick to aim.

Your arsenal of weapons are not a wide variety. Your normal gun, a laser gun, grenade launcher and flame thrower. Your normal gun can receive timed Rapid Fire upgrades if you find them hidden in each Level.

There’s also a Spiked Bat which is hidden on each Level. This gives a small timed amount of invincibility coupled with Bat wielding melee combat.

Enemies are not varied either and come in three classes.

The normal sized ones aimlessly run from one end of a platform to another. One that sits still but fires projectiles at you and giant sized hammer wielding creatures, all derived from the same species it seems. Then there’s the armoured and exploding Jellyfish / Squids and of course a lot of environmental hazards. Water is deadly.

Throughout each Level you will encounter a myriad of puzzles to solve to make your way through. It most definitely is not all run and gun. There are also hidden areas, mini-game Glitch zones where you play as Dusty and secret rooms where NPCs await with in-game goodness.

To complete each Level and to exit you need to find four pieces of a jeweled disc.

The duration of your gameplay in each Level is timed and points are either rewarded or removed accordingly. Much like the old skool games that would do a Points tally at the end of your adventures.

Rad Rogers is a must play. A modern take on 16BIT soundtrack the game is expectedly short and repetitive. It’s a classic rework that gamers of the 90’s will appreciate how it used to be and new comers will find a quick and tasty adventure, retro styled .

Beautifully animated with equally detailed and vividly coloured environments, each individual Level will boast around 15 to 20 minutes of play. If you wanted to rip through the entire game you could do so in just a couple of hours. I’d hoped for better longevity and I’m currently hoping for a World 2 DLC in future.

Still, Rad Rogers is a totally radical adventure.

Recently THQ Nordic announced to us at StG that a purchase agreement with the newly formed Slipgate Studios has been agreed to which means Rad Rodgers will be part of THQ Nordic´s IP portfolio moving forward. On top of that, THQ Nordic and Slipgate Studios have sealed another deal to complete development of Rad Rodgers on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, starting right now.

The Kickstarter financed game brings back the 90’s-era PC platformer with a game inspired by classics like Commander Keen, Conker, Ruff’n’Tumble & Jazz Jackrabbit.

“Rad Rodgers was a game we had a lot of fun developing. Beginning with the successful crowd-funding campaign which motivated us extremely, through to the loads of responses and praise we got from fans of the game. It was a great experience for us and now we are happy to let THQ Nordic take over this, as we have the feeling they do not just buy games, but do take good care of them too.” said Frederik Schreiber, Slipgate Studios.

“Rad Rodgers was recently nominated for the award “Best Technical Achievement” at Spilprisen 2017 in Denmark” said Josh Olin, VP Publishing at 3D Realms. “We’re honored to have had the chance to work with such a creative group of indie developers, and happy we could help find Rad Rodgers such a promising new future with our friends at THQ Nordic! 3D Realms will continue our mission to help innovative indies find greater levels of success, faster.”

“I love it when a plan comes together” comments Reinhard Pollice, Business and Product Development Director at THQ Nordic.

Rad is a rambunctious but spirited young boy who maybe plays too many video games. After dozing off at the tail end of a long night of gaming, Rad awakens to find his dusty old console has turned itself back on. Suddenly a vortex emerges and he’s sucked into his TV, where he finds himself the star in his very own video game adventure.

Dusty is Rad’s good-hearted but foul-mouthed, now-sentient game console. His clock speed isn’t what it used to be, but what he lacks for in megahertz he makes up for with experience and attitude!

Rad & Dusty’s adventure begins in the First World, taking them through seven dangerous stages of action-packed, humor-filled, hardcore platforming fun. This decaying jungle world has been infected by a fierce corruption, and it’s up to the unlikely buddy-duo Rad and Dusty to save the jungle’s inhabitants and restore the Elder Tree as guardian of the land.

Official release date is yet to be determined.
