An original release for Nintendo’s Wii console all the way back in 2010, Disney’s Epic Mickey took the interactive Wii wands and turned them in to paint brushes.

Fast forward to 2024 (yep 14 years!) Epic Mickey is back, Rebrushed with a new coat of paint.

Narrated by the Sorcerer Yen Sid, Mickey finds himself in a cartoon wasteland.

It’s desolate, sad place for forgotten things, and as Mickey explores this world with a magic paintbrush he brings colour, light and substance for all.

But it’s not just a platformer where you go about and paint stuff, there is a bad guy. The Blot prefers things as they are and likes to reign with terror.

Each level, environment is a mix of puzzle and platform.

You play as Mickey, and you’ll have the ability to splash colour on otherwise ‘invisible’ areas, or erase, as you need.

Painting over areas either reveals the way forward, opens additional paths and even secrets.

It’s fair to say that this game, the original release was gold on Nintendo Wii, as you could wave the Wand controller about to play.

Now remastered and released on every platform, it has taken that virtual interactive control and placed it in to a standard gamepad or keyboard – which actually works well.

Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is a substantial play for kids, or big kids.

Family friendly but also tricky enough to add longevity to gameplay.

Built with remastered visuals, Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is an interactive work of art in its own right.

Blackadder is one of the greatest comedies that has ever existed.

I came across it when a friend told me that there was an awesome comedy with the actor that played Mr Bean and that it is super witty.

Skeptically I watched an episode from Blackadder The Third, and I was immediately hooked. After owning, then loaning out my DVD collection many years ago and it never returning, I was stoked to see a new release with Black Adder: The Complete Collection Remastered, and I must say, you should own this collection.

If you don’t know Blackadder, you are in for a serious treat.

Rowan Atkinson plays the fictitious Edmund Blackadder in different historical settings. The first season has him as a weasley Duke of Edinburgh in the 1400’s. He is the kings son, but the king doesn’t like him so he does what he can to get power.

The second season follows Edmund Blackadder in the 1500’s where he is constantly trying to gain power by making Queen Elizabeth I happy.

The third season jumps to the 18th century where Blackadder is the butler to Prince George and the forth season jumps to World War I where he is a Captain in the trenches. Each of them have recurring characters in new roles, and none more famous than his servant style character Baldrick.

These massively changing settings allow for resets, and brand new material to make comedy from.

I was never the biggest fan of the first season, and in rewatching it I have realised why. The other three seasons have Blackadder as a very clever and conniving character who is always in it for himself. The first season on the other hand he is the bumbling idiot, and his assistants like Baldrick tend to be the smarter ones helping him out. On this rewatch I enjoyed the season a lot more than I had before, but it’s still not the strongest of the four.

Season three and four are still the best ones, with Blackadder The Third showing him as a man twisting and manipulating the idiotic Prince George who is played by Hugh Lawry.

It has some of the funniest and most iconic moments from the series, and Hugh Lawry makes me laugh every time. Blackadder Goes Forth is a mastery of making a comedy in such a tragic time. Blackadder does everything in his power to avoid going over the top to certain death. In his company is Hugh Lawry again, playing the same style of idiot as he was as George, except this time as a lieutenant. And consistently, Baldrick is one of the funniest characters ever created with his practical attempts to solve problems, his lack of general knowledge, and just excellent consistent humor.

Now for why this collection is extra brilliant.

Previous releases just had the series, and I had to buy the specials on their own. Not this time. Blackadder: The Cavalier Years, Blackadder’s Christmas Carol, and Blackadder: Back & Forth are all included in the collection. The Cavalier years is set in the English Civil War which is a familiar style to the series.

Blackadder’s Christmas Carol shows a Blackadder who is the kindest person around, is shown his past lives as a reward where he discovers that being greedy is better, and becomes the classic Blackadder at the end.

Blackadder: Back & Forth was made way later, and has Blackadder trying to trick his friends with a fake time machine. It turns out Baldrick accidentally made a real one and they whip through time settings seeing other Blackadders and Baldricks. The specials are as consistently brilliant as the show.

Blackadder: The Complete Collection Remastered hasn’t had a massive overhaul, and looks pretty old, but that doesn’t stop it from being as brilliant now as it ever was. If you don’t already have all the series and specials in your collection, you owe it to yourself to pick this up.

There are some additional special features which are great to watch and enjoy, but it’s the core show and specials that make this collection worth every cent.

Naughty Dog asks fans of The Last of Us games to part with their cash, once more. This time it’s for the definitive PlayStation 5 version of the 2020 sequel, The Last of Us Part II Remastered.

“But I’ve already got The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation 5”, I hear you say. And you’d be right. The original PlayStation 4 game was updated for PS5 owners back in 2021 with performance improvements for the new console.

This new release not only offers some more performance improvements but also a new game mode and some levels previously left on the cutting room floor. It’s less of a remaster and more of a director’s cut, in my mind.

The first game, The Last of Us (Part I), introduced players to a post-apocalyptic world where a fungus-based virus outbreak has wiped out most of humanity. The virus infects humans growing inside them causing madness before taking over their bodies entirely turning them into blind “clickers”.

Joel, a crusty mercenary, and Elle, a teenage girl who may hold the cure that can save humanity, venture out across America. Along the way to find the doctors that can use Ellie’s immunity to the virus, the pair must face monsters, not only the infected but also humans that will do anything to survive.

The Last of Us offers a chilling tale, spiced with action and puzzles. It is highly regarded and it’s no surprise that the HBO TV adaptation of the game became an instant hit.

This sequel, The Last of Us Part II, takes the story in a controversial new direction that polarised its audience when originally released back in 2020. The game follows on from the end of the first instalment. The plot deals with the aftermath of the protagonist, Joel’s, decision to save Elle rather than have her die to save humanity. A brutal choice, perhaps the wrong choice, but one that I expect most players would have chosen as well.

Whereas the first game was about the growing bond between an orphaned girl and a surrogate father, Part II is a tale of revenge. It’s a darker game, that offers the same sort of gameplay as its predecessor but with a story that was a little too harsh for many fans of the first game. Personally, I think The Last of Us Part II makes the ending of the first game better. It solves a narrative issue that never sat well with me, even if it does so in such a brutal manner.

This version offers players marginally better performance on the PlayStation 5 hardware but not enough to recommend that you rush out and buy it if you’ve already got the updated PS4 version. The game still offers performance and fidelity options- either better visuals or a higher framerate, a compromise that I think gamers shouldn’t still be faced with.

The package includes three lost levels, unfinished sequences that were cut from the final game. Each one has a video introduction by the game director, Neil Druckman, and optional audio commentary within each level that explains a little more about the design process.

The first level, Jackson Party, is a sequence that is only mentioned in the released game. This level is from the beginning of the game showing Elle and the citizens of Jackson having a good time, a vision of normality before things take a turn for the worse. The next level, Seattle Sewers, has Elle swept into the storm drains traversing increasingly tight spaces to get to the surface. The last level, The Hunt has Ellie following the blood trail of an injured boar. The sequence is a parallel to the deer hunt in the first game.

Joining the filters, models, and concept art in the “extras” section in the guitar free play. This allows you to play the guitar as you do at certain points in the game, as you please. You can play as Ellie, Joel, or the game’s soundtrack composer, Gustavo Santaolalla. There are some unlockable backgrounds and a few different guitars to play.

The most interesting new feature of this remaster is the new game mode, No Return. Likely cobbled together from the carcass of the abandoned Last of Us multiplayer game, this Rogue-like game has players facing off against waves of attackers. The levels are based on areas from the main game. There are challenges with extra rewards and unlockables. It’s a fun game of cat and mouse that recreates some of the more heart-in-mouth stealth combat sequences from the game.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered seems to be less about refining the PlayStation 5 player experience (which with the patched PS4 version, was already very good) and more about getting the code ready for the inevitable PC release.

The lost levels, the No Return bonus mode, and the promise of the Grounded 2 making off documentary as post-release content round off the definitive version of the game. Until the next reissue, that is.

Revisit the 2000’s era of 64BIT gaming in 4K and 120FPS with the remastered Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion Remastered.

Originally released in the year 2000 by the long gone Acclaim Studios for the Nintendo 64, a console that at the time super rendered those pixels giving us a video gaming visual fest like never seen before.

Fast forward twenty three years and Nightdive Studios has remastered this classic for present day.

The third instalment in the Turok franchise Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is a first person shooter where you take the role of either Danielle or Joseph, each having their own unique skills.

The game is a direct follow on from the second instalment; Turok 2: Seeds of Evil where Primagen’s Lightship was destroyed.

An explosion so devastatingly powerful it broke the Universe it was within, unleashing an interstellar entity that takes over the bodies of living folks, an entity that itself once reigned before the Universe existed. And this entity also bought along some of it’s Jurassic pals along for the ride.

You will collect all manner of weaponry as you play, in total 16 different types of weapons and you’ll start out with a pistol, a knife and bow and arrow.

Collectables and consumables are rife throughout the game, especially if you explore the mostly open environments. Your weapon selection is via a selector wheel assigned to a hot-key on your gamepad for easier swap outs.

This remastered version is not a complete graphical overhaul though. You still get those early Y2K squared edges, minimalistic environmental detail, but all is smoothed and fluid, retaining that sense of nostalgia.

However audio needs some work. At times the voice acting sound and in-game sound effects was distant and scratchy.

And, Nightdive did not include the Multiplayer modes, which really made the original game stand out at the time. Why Nightdive, why?!!

The main campaign play of Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion Remastered is still a substantial play, even by today’s standards.

So, if you’re wanting to relive that 64BIT era but not keen on playing through the pixels on our present day flat screen TVs (back then we all had CRT TVs), Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion Remastered is going to give you that ‘back in the day’ feel with present day SCIFI action.

Minus multiplayer.

Ray Davies: “I thought I knew everything about my songs until I was given the opportunity to put this record together. The new sequencing has enabled us to show the ‘big picture’ and give a more insightful back story about how our music evolved. I learned a lot about myself in putting this together.”

Dave Davies: “Another chance to listen to some of my favourite Kinks releases over the years. A perfect example of our diverse and creative musical legacy.”

Mick Avory: “A strong selection of Kinks songs across the years, that should give the listener some nice surprises.”

The songs on The Journey – Parts 1 & 2, for the first time ever on a Kinks collection, have been handpicked by Ray, Dave and Mick, curated according to themes inspired by the trials and tribulations of their journey through life together as a band since 1963. The tracks are taken from the classic original Kinks albums including: Face To Face, The Kink Kontroversy, Something Else, The Village Green Preservation Society, Lola Versus Powerman and The Moneygoround, Muswell Hillbillies, Everybody’s In Show-Biz, Preservation Acts 1 & 2 and A Soap Opera.

The year is 1986, and designer Ryuchi Nishizawa has an idea for a new game.

Mr. Nishizawa wanted to create an action game with an added amount of pressure.
The rise and fall of the pioneering video games company Atari reads like a modern myth.

It’s a surreal tale of how a few enterprising computer engineers saw the future of interactive entertainment and laid the foundations for what is now a billion-dollar industry.

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is an incredibly well-presented digital museum of video gaming heritage. It follows the timeline from Atari’s first Computer Space cabinet right up to the ill-fated Atari Jaguar console.

Curated by Digital Eclipse, recently responsible for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cowabunga Collection, Atari 50 is a warts-and-all interactive experience that covers the highs and lows of the various iterations of the Atari brand.

Via archive videos, new interviews, and reproductions of the games, packaging, and brochures this collection takes you through a unique journey from the arcades of the 70s to the humble start of modern home computers and console gaming.

Whilst you can just jump in and sample the 100 or so games included in the package, at least for the first look, they are best viewed in context within the collection’s chronological timelines. Going on a journey through the early history of Atari offers a better understanding and appreciation of the included video games.

The documentary-style video interviews offer insight into how Atari functioned back in the day. Tales of drug-taking debauchery are both denied and confirmed (playing some of the included games, I’d say there were plenty of illicit substances involved). There are also TV spots, brochures for the original arcade cabinets, photos and the amazing (and not-so-amazing) box art all carefully reproduced like a museum exhibit.

I remember gazing through shop windows at the amazing box art of the Atari 2600 games. Titles like Haunted Mansion had movie poster-style covers that thrilled me with the potential adventure within. With many boxes boasting multiple games (which were mostly only different game modes), I was envious of anyone that owned an Atari console.

In truth, though, the imaginative box art was usually far superior than the game inside. The images often bore little resemblance to the games, serving only to set the scene for what would otherwise be a collection of indecipherable pixels moving about the screen.

The above is made painfully clear in Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. A handful of timeless classics and a few remakes, aside, I found a majority of the games, especially the early console titles, unplayable now. Whilst the story of the infamous E.T. game is well documented, most Atari fayre during the 80s was similarly shonky.

But none of that detracts from the value of this collection. What is presented is a unique and comprehensive interactive archive of modern video gaming’s origin story.

What you get out of Atari 50 very much depends on your age and your familiarity with some of the games. Whilst I’ll never get tired of playing Lunar Lander, Asteroids, and Breakout, apart from a little bit of nostalgia for Centipede and a few of the other arcade games, I thank my lucky stars I “missed out” on playing most of Atari’s early back catalogue.

Even the Lynx games, which I remember being quite good at the time, are not really that much fun.

Experiencing the games chronologically, and in context, alongside the interviews with the original programmers affords you a better appreciation if you are unfamiliar with their legacy. This is the best way to sample the games rather than jumping straight into a horrific-looking Atari 2600 game that was programmed in three weeks. It’s only as the collection marches on into the 90s that the console games start to resemble anything close to a modern video gaming experience.

It’s difficult to impart just how important this collection is, and I’m not much of a retro gamer. I spent most of my early teens guiding vampiric exclamation marks around black-and-white mazes, whilst avoiding monstrous asterisks on a Sinclair ZX81. So, it’s not that I don’t hold these pioneering games in high regard, it’s just I played a lot of them and their ilk the first time around. Nowadays, I’d sooner be playing Uncharted than Yars’ Revenge.

For many, the novelty will be the big draw. My 11-year-old lad recognised Adventure from the Ready Player One movie- another bit of media that capitalises on the same nostalgia.

The huge number of games that can be played in their original format (complete with arcade cabinet border art in some cases) with or without TV screen filters, in full screen, or stretched into a widescreen aspect. Many of the console games also include the different game modes.

Games like Breakout, Pong, Centipede, and Missile Command are all essential games that everyone should play at least once. But for me, it’s the inclusion of vector graphics games like Asteroids, Lunar Lander, and Tempest that I got the most out of. Digital Eclipse’s reimagined version of classic Atari games are also diamonds in the rough.

VCTR-SCTR is a new game inspired by ground-breaking vector graphics classics such as Asteroids and Lunar lander. Yars’ Revenge Enhanced takes the original and gives it a bit more polish, although I’m not sure it is a better game for it.

Neo Breakout is a fun remaster that’s just as tricky as the original. The reimagined Haunted House finally gives me the game that was promised by the packaging back in that shop window 40 years ago.

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is a fantastic interactive archive of video gaming’s humble beginning. It’s an essential purchase for those with any interest in the history of video games. It will also fuel the nostalgia for those of us that remember these games the first time around.

The reimagined games are just enough to cover the price of admission for everyone else. As someone that’s been playing video games since the 1970s, I found the collection to be a fascinating time capsule that ensures that these ground-breaking, if dated, games remain playable, warts and all.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a medley of classic games featuring those heroes in a half-shell, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The collection grabs you straight away with the iconic Turtles theme tune and introduction, all polished up for this new arrangement. Thirteen games have been collected together ranging from the arcade cabinets to the Nintendo Gameboy games.

I have a particular fondness for Eastman and Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. My love of the pizza-chomping amphibians stretches back to the comic book, before the cartoon and toy line that made Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo household names.

This is a collection that is all about nostalgia. And of all the games presented, your personal favourite will likely depend on where you jumped on board for the Turtlemania that spawned these games.

I would regularly visit the amusement arcade in the sad little British seaside town of Folkestone with friends. It was here we stumbled upon the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game. Both the four-player Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time arcade cabinet games are included in their full glory. For me, these two titles are the cream of the collection and worth the price of admission, alone.

The Nintendo Entertainment System Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is a single-player platform game exclusive to the system, with the two-player TNMT II: The Arcade Game porting the cabinet game to the console. The two-player NES TMNT III: The Manhattan Project has the same gameplay style as the arcade game.

The NES, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis versions of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters are included. This game takes inspiration from Streetfighter, pitting the turtles against a range of foes.

The second of the two included SNES games is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time. This being a two-player home console port of the arcade cabinet sequel. The two-player Sega Genesis TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, again, continues with the same gameplay style as the original arcade game.

The package is rounded off with the Gameboy version of TMNT: The Fall of the Foot Clan, TMNT II: Back from the Sewers, and TMNT III: Radical Rescue. These are all presented in their original black and white as with the LCD screen on the vintage handheld console.

As a special extra, there are also online versions of the two four-player arcade games, the two-player SNES version of Tournament Fighters, and the two-player Genesis game, The Hyperstone Heist.

Many of the games have enhancements and cheats that can be activated. There are mid-game saves, border and screen options, and filers that mimic old TVs, etc. The games have been presented in a way that allows them to be enjoyed by anyone.

As well as the games, The Cowabunga Collection includes a media museum of sorts in the Turtle Lair section. Here you will find images of vintage game adverts, production stills, game boxes, and instruction books. There’s even a music archive from all the games. These extras also go beyond the video games and include images from the comic books and animated cartoons. This is a great feature and really caps The Cowabunga Collection off as an archival presentation rather than just a game collection.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a fascinating package. It is as much a piece of retro gaming nostalgia as is a lovingly prepared virtual museum of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. As is often the way with our old favourites, the games may not be as good as you remember them. If anything, this serves as a good remember of how far video games have come in the last 30 years. It’s an impressive trip down memory lane for those wanting to rekindle a miss-spent young, but expect funny looks from your kids as you explain to them what a great game looked like when you were their age.

‘Turtle Power’!

Revolver: The Beatles’ 1966 album that changed everything.

Spinning popular music off its axis and ushering in a vibrant new era of experimental, avant-garde sonic psychedelia, Revolver brought about a cultural sea change and marked an important turn in The Beatles’ own creative evolution.

With Revolver, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr set sail together across a new musical sea.

On October 28, 2022, Revolver will be released worldwide in a range of beautifully presented, newly mixed and expanded Special Edition packages by Apple Corps Ltd. / Capitol / UMe. The Special Edition’s new stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes of the album’s opening track “Taxman” make their digital release debuts with today’s announcement and preorder launch.

The Revolver album’s 14 tracks have been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell in stereo and Dolby Atmos, and the album’s original mono mix is sourced from its 1966 mono master tape. Revolver’s sweeping new Special Edition follows the universally acclaimed remixed and expanded Special Editions of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (2017), The BEATLES (‘White Album’) (2018), Abbey Road (2019), and Let It Be (2021).

All the new Revolver releases feature the album’s new stereo mix, sourced directly from the original four-track master tapes. The audio is brought forth in stunning clarity with the help of cutting edge de-mixing technology developed by the award-winning sound team led by Emile de la Rey at Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films Productions Ltd.

The physical and digital Super Deluxe collections also feature the album’s original mono mix, 28 early takes from the sessions and three home demos, and a four-track EP with new stereo mixes and remastered original mono mixes for “Paperback Writer” and “Rain”. The album’s new Dolby Atmos mix will be released digitally.

Kiwi rock band Shihad are today celebrating the 20th anniversary of their iconic record PACIFIER.

To mark the occasion and to fan’s delight, Shihad have announced the pre-order of the first ever vinyl release of the record, set for February 17th, 2023.

At the time of its release in 2002 – and prior to their name change – the band were known as Pacifier and their self-titled album was quick to gain huge success and hit #1.
At the time singles ‘Comfort Me’, ‘Run’ and ‘Bullitproof’ from the album went on to be hit singles nationwide, with ‘Bullitproof’ peaking at #27 on the global Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and #37 on the global Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

“Finally! To celebrate its 20th anniversary, we’re releasing our Pacifier album on vinyl!! This super deluxe version is a thing of beauty and has been remastered to sound awesome! (Especially at high volume!) This very limited edition is gonna go quick so make sure you grab yours before they’re all gone!” Lead Singer, Jon Toogood says.

The news of the special edition vinyl comes off the back of the recent announcement of the Shihad tour. With New Zealand’s return to the live music scene, Shihad will soon be touring their recent #1 2021 album OLD GODS; a long overdue opportunity for the band to reconnect with their fans. Ready to rock n roll – the band has a lot to celebrate.
